i agree with the whole "you should groom and maintain your own dog" as an owner because not only are you forming a closer bond but your dog should trust you to do it more than anyone else. It makes more sense for you to do something that your dog normally dislikes for the purpose of making them more comfortable.

My daughter bought one and we also have a 6 year old American Pit.. the Shiba is almost 10 months both female.. and now it's hard to get them apart.. it's funny to watch them play, the Pit is so gentle with her mostly..lol the Pit Luna treats the Shiba like it's own pup .Shiba (Chia) 10lbs Pit 95lbs (Luna) both are great dogs.... like having extra kids running around... love you guys video...

That's a really good guide, i think. Most dogs will probably be okay with nail clipping and baths if they are exposed to it from pups with positive affirmation :)

Desensitization training is important. By getting them used to paw-touching in the first place, you can move onto the clippers. If it is overwhelming, you can also split it up into a few different sessions. Start with just the front paws and save the back ones for tomorrow. If there are nails that need more attention that others (like one that is curling into their paw pad), consider those as their own ordeal and let them have a break afterwards. You can also start to phase out treats by using kibble as a reward too.

I don't think I ever gave my Shiba treats when it came to nail trimmings. I just worked with him a lot to desensitize him to having his paws touched. That & making it clear that screaming was NOT going to be tolerated. So now I think he's just accepted his fate when it comes to nail trimming, baths, etc. because he will just lay there like a ragdoll when it's nail trimming time lol

My shiba was adopted so I couldn't do this when she was young but it is very difficult to pull off right now. I tried using treats to help her associate it with a positive thing but now she thinks of the treats as a trap so she won't even come close if she sees the treats. Also pinning her down would be a bit scary since she likes to nip at me if she doesn't want to do something, so that combined with a ton of squirming doesn't sound too fun. I usually have to take her to the vet to get her nails trimmed because the groomers can't but not every vet can do it either. It's a bit of a similar story with giving her a bath. She freaks out a lot when I give her one and she will ignore all treats as well, she won't try to bite me but she won't sit still so it's hard to properly wash her. The groomers can't bathe her either, they told me it was too dangerous but I don't know if they meant for her or them. I know she trusts me so I don't want to keep making her do things she hates in case it makes her start to lose that trust. I know the video is a bit old but I just saw it in recommended and thought I'd ask for advice
