The one word in this hobby that can't be over used is PATIENCE!!! New people in this hobby (like myself when I first started) can get tired of hearing this word, but it is the most important word in this whole hobby. Keep up the good work! Love watching your videos.

Awesome video. I'm thinking of starting a saltwater tank and have watched a million of these videos to try and figure out the details and how things like cycling work. It's funny how so many of these videos say "for beginners" yet they leave out all the details of the process. These guys are more concerned with their youtube "schtick". Here's a video with no fancy schtick or production, just basic facts and details. Love it. This is the 1st video to tip the scales to actually going forward with the tank. Thanks!

HI, great video. I am cycling my new 180 gal tank at the moment. I added 65 Kg of live rock 10 days ago, and my ammonia and nitrite readings gradually went off the scale chart. But yesterday my ammonia and nitrite readings have started to drop, and I see the start of the brown diatoms beginning. I think the whole process is very exciting, how great is nature! looking forward to your clean up crew update, as I need to sort some out soon.

I wish I had seen your series when I started. Everything you explained happened to me and I lost money and time. The main reason was lack of patience. After about 11 months the water balanced out perfectly much to my surprise. Now I'm starting to enjoy the tank rather than regret it. I now test the water maybe once a week and water change every 2 to 3 weeks vs. test every 3 days and change every week. This hobby is definitely not a race. Take the advice of those that have been in the game for a while. It will save you a lot of heart ache and money!!!!

It is my smallest tank as i also have a 180 gallon with FRONTOSA and a 90 gallon with malawi cichlids, if all goes well with the 75 and i can keep it going for 6 months to a year i may convert my 180 to saltwater.

Hey, I really enjoy your videos, thanks for taking the time to make them. Today I set up my 65g with a diy sump. I used some live rock that I bought about two years ago from a local guy. I kept it in a tub with live sand, pump and occasionally fed it with fish food. My ro/di water reads 0 nitrates and when I placed the live rock with the live sand from the tub, it reads 20 ppm and ammonia .25 ppm. My rock does have some of that brown diatom, but not much.

Hi steelo. My tank has been cycling for 3 days with uncured live rock as recommended. How soon into the cycle should I add the chaetomorpha to the refugium? Also, I have added my sand to create a DSB, unfortunately I will need to add more as it is only 3.5 inches. Can I just add the extra on top? I'm not sure if I will cause a problem by trapping organic matter doing this. Thanks in advance.

Just looking at the rear glass of your tank... Did you put a colored background (blue) or was this already on your tank? I am starting a new tank and just drilled the rear for plumbing to the sump... Steelo, I moved a 90 gallon established tank with a couple fish in it. Once it was set up I tested all water perimeters and things looked good. About 10 days after the move the brown algae bloomed like crazy and just in the last two days the green took over. This sounds like a tank cycling. I did make a change to the system, originally it was set up with a canister filter and a protein skimmer hanging off the back. I added a refugium to get gear below. What happened? 160 lbs of live rock & sand

The tank is 100 gallons and has about 80 to 90 pounds of LR. Some of the LR came with the tank and 60 pounds I bought from someone shutting down a 210 gal tank. Hi steelo. Great video once again. I am setting up a FOWLR system with a 4 inch deep sand bed. After adding the uncured live rock, do I need to do any water changes while the system is cycling or do I let the sand bed do the work? I've heard the smell can be quite bad. I really find your videos very informative. I recently purchased a saltwater aquarium setup from craigslist. The aquarium was running when I picked it up. The water wasn't saved but the live rock and sand was. The filter that came with it still has the water from the aquarium in it. The sand and live rock as well. I'm sure some of the beneficials died off the rock. I added new ro water to the aquarium. Any idea how long it might take to cycle? Being that it has some established sand, rock, media

Thank you for your prompt response. The reason I asked if my type of cycling considered as "cycling with live rock" if I only have 3 pounds of cured live rock?" is because I want to know should I add source of ammonia or I would have enough die off from the cured live rock that I bought? I checked my water last night and it gave me 0,0,0 so I added a dead shrimp in there to start the ammonia. Is the dead shrimp necessary?

i water tested the tank last night and it showe the ammonia levels were at btween 1,0 and 2,0 ppm anh the nitrates were at around 5.0 is this a sine that the cycle is happening as there was a slight amount of dicey that was able to happen from the live rock also added some bacteria from my fresh water tank to boost it and also using a trical filter and then 2 other power heads so there should be plenty places for the bacteria to grow ? whats your advice ?

this video is fantastic. I'm curing my first piece of live rock. the amount of people that have told me to do full water changes. my 2 kgs of live rock with 20 litres of water and begun cycling. i put a power head in there to circulate the water, but a shrimp came out of the rock and was stuck on it. I changed the pump for a air stone to circulate the water and the shrimp has survived so far, and a small clam has also appeared and seems to be well.
