Through my own noodlings, I came up with a fairly decent "Chinese" gong/cymbal sound by layering a saw pitch-bent in one direction over a hi-pass noise pitch-bent in the other. Slowing down lfo on HP noise can approximate a sorta shimmering effect. Anyway, back to the video....

This was great. Volca Drum is a remarkable device. One of my favorite tricks when I'm doing more ambient/soundscape projects is to turn the bpm all the way down to 10 and then max out the attack/release, slice, and send features. You get some wild sounds.

These How To Drum videos are great. They offer a lot of god insight into drum synthesis, and being honest I agree that I'd probably take a cymbal over a snare for the second percussion piece any day. Plus, cymbals are the thing I struggle to synthesize quite a lot from scratch, so this was a huge help.

Bam! Oscillator Sink nails it. Another superb video. Don't suppose you/anybody reading this can recommend the next step up in drum synths from the Volca Drum? Is there something in the £500 range with, say, additional layers, waveforms and modulation? Volcas are really good taster dishes but Korg has forgotten to put any main courses on their menu. There's a huge leap up in price from the £150 (approx.) Volcas and their £1200 "professional" big brothers. But anyway, I do love my little Volca Drum and I love the way you've explained it. So thanks and please keep em coming.

This won't be a great surprise given my previous form, and it's not really a like for like... But have you considered a Digitone?
@dinogoldie97164 жыл бұрын
+Oscillator Sink Well I have considered moving from the Volca FM to the digitone (6 operators hurts my brain). I've heard good things about the Elektron Model Cycles as a drum machine/groovebox but I fear there's too much menu-diving for my accessibility needs. I've just got a Microfreak and once I've memorised the mod matrix, that'll be fun (hopefully).

Hey Dino Goldie, if you're ready for some DIY fun, you should look at the LXR from Sonic Potion. That's a 6 voices/4 engines drums synth: www.sonic-potions.com/lxr

Dino Goldie - there is not a lot of menu diving at all. I aaaaalmost consider the Cycles the big brother of the Volca Drum. I kind of wished while the teasers were going on that it would be Elektron’s take on the Volca Drum / Nord Drum in Digi- format. Not that I dislike the Cycles, not at all, they are just “different” in that they go in way different directions when you start pushing, and I appreciate the way Elektron implemented the design and UX. I have a LOT to learn on the Cycles but the Drum is not going anywhere.

you have alot of good points throughout your kick one, and very great explanations of what youre doing as you're doing it.

I've restarted the intro 3 times. My head gets lost in the funky cymbals every time, and none of the words come through

Yeah, I enjoy that kind of videos, it's been a while since I've tweaked my volca drum. Gonna try something with your editor

Wow, your videos on the Volca drum are so amazing, thank you so much, I stopped playing my volca drum in favor of the sample a lil while ago because of how lost I was at making "normal" percussion sounds, this video solved that for me, thanks alot! Is there a way to save the kits/parts made on the volca drum on a PC using your tool or else? Thanks.

Thanks, I'm glad they have helped. I don't think anyone has worked out how to dump patches from the vdrum sadly - there's no midi out for a start, but even with a midi out mod, I don't believe anyone has worked out the sysex magic to get it done. That's part of the reason I made the editor - so that I could make patches that weren't locked inside the Volca.

@@OscillatorSink Oh ok thanks, i get it. I could instead just "copy" the knobs settings on my volca into your editor and it would do kind of the same, thanks!

Thanks a lot! But is it possible to do a crash cymbal or did I missed something? Just got my Volca Drum and try to decode how it works.
