If your phone is newer-ish with android 9+ it probably has Treble and can run phone agnostic generic system images (GSI), it's not as good as model specific builds, but better than nothing

Modifiying the /system/app folder since it can be overwritten by an update Most of the time i would recommend installing magisk and making a module for it (Modules can also just be an android update zip, but the magisk spec is preferedd) There is also a module made for replacing the systemwebview and the web browser with multiple chromium browsers to choose (use vol keys to choose)

I don't know what Magisk is but if it roots your phone then you are extremely foolish if you subsequently use that phone as your daily driver with all of your personal information on it. The lack of root is there for a reason, it's to protect your data.

Very good and informative video! You should also do one on the "x192/universal-android-debloater", which is a desktop app that can disable/uninstall system apps without requiring root. Very useful to debloat an Android device that comes with lots of unneeded apps that cannot be disabled otherwise.

The only issue is since the system changes being made are manual they're going to have to be redone every time you update LOS as the installer script is just going to blindly overwrite everything. Why not use Magisk to systemlessly make these changes? Yes you have to reflash Magisk after an LOS update but I imagine that's much quicker.

Have you tried the camera application from lineage os?, when I've installed custom roms, It always looks like the open source camera apps they include is worse than the propietary one made by manufacturers.

From my understanding, phone cameras on their own aren't that good. You only get good pictures because of software processing, which is of course proprietary. You may be able to find an implementation of Gcam for your phone though. I've never looked into it too much myself, since I don't really take pictures, but I've seen a bit of discussion on this on XDA.

@@lapin_noir it's Google so they may have issues with using it. Although, if you have the correct kind of phone, you can use Magisk to install its own camera app (it's true for Xiaomi and I think OnePlus phones), and use that directly, easy.

If you are using xiomi devices, there is a project called ANX camera. You need to flash the zip files. This gives you vendor supplied camera quality.

It's designed to be locked down as part of the security model. When you use Linux on a PC or a desktop (which I do as my main OS now), you have two security layers protecting you from "attack" from the Internet. Firstly, because you never connect to the Internet directly, you always sat behind a NAT router in your home network or on public wifi - that NAT router acts as a firewall to, by default, block virtually all incoming traffic into your computer. Secondly, you can choose to have a kernel-based firewall (iptables / firewalld) that provides an additional security layer for access into that system - whether that is activated by default depends on the distro that you use but it is there if you need it. When your phone is connected to your home wifi or public wifi, it too has two security layers - the NAT router and the internal "firewall" it runs that essentially control application permissions. The problem comes when you connect directly to your cellular provider for data because then there is no NAT router in the way and you'd be entirely reliant upon what the provider does and does not let get to your phone. Essentially, all you have protecting you is whatever is built into the phone. This is a good reason to not enable root unless you really have tom because having root disabled adds another security layer to a system - you can even use a Ubuntu Linux system without any root access. That provides one more obstacle to a malicious third party taking control of your phone and therefore it's extremely foolish to enable root access on any phone on which you have personal data. Note that unlocking the boot loader to put Lineage OS on is not the same as rooting the phone.

Xiaomi phones have great support with LineageOS and other custom roms once you unlock it. Just don't buy a Mediatek model. Aliexpress is your friend here. Check the phone's ROM support before buying it of course.

You are getting confused. GApps has always been a separate download to Lineage OS or to Cyanogenmod that was before it. What he is talking about here are additional settings in the phone that use some Google services like DNS, even when GApps are not installed.

Have you tried or looked at iodeOS? Its what I use on my exynos note 9. It uses microg and is based on lineageos but adds in a kernel level firewall that blocks any blacklisted connections.

I feel like all these ROMs are basically a dime a dozen, but someone just getting into this sort of de-googling thing will not have the best time using them over LineageOS. LOS is super compatible and widely used, and that helps in making this stuff easier on it, and my guy makes these videos for anyone interested in looking into something they can actually do, so LOS is the way. Also it's just a nice ROM. I'm not into Google-free, but I've used it with gapps+microG like a normie and it's hella stable and nice to use.

Yes, you are correct. But there are still settings with the phone that use some Google services, like DNS. But as I have said above, without GApps there is no identity linked to the phone and therefore all Google can log is the IP address you are coming in from - from what the phone reveals to them, they don't know your identity.

@@valerabaglej7437 It's just an IP address if it cannot be linked to an identity. If you have a PC and a de-Googled phone at home, both on the same network, then they use the same external IP address out onto the Internet. If you are using a Google service on your PC, like Gmail, then Google has an identity on that IP address. If you then use your phone at the same time with Google DNS, they know who you are because your PC has already established an identity on that IP address. To avoid that happening, you could use VPN or TOR on one or both devices - or you could connect your phone via the cellular network instead and it would be on a diffrerent IP address. With a de-Googled phone, there is no identity you log in as and no Google Play services running - so Google cannot see your phone number or IMEI number and therefore it is much more difficult for them to identify who is on the IP address.

To an extent, but their express intent is not to fully de-Google devices, nor to provide the most privacy possible. It's better for your privacy than stock ROMs but they keep a number of bad things (e.g. using Google for DNS, using Google's SIM card management iirc, etc.)

As I understand it, it's the phone manufacturer firmware that decides whether or not you can lock the boot loader, not Lineage OS. It's similar to "secure boot" on PCs in that locking the boot loader only allows you to boot from digitally-signed binaries - and I doubt any manufacturer is going to allow Lineage OS to sign their binaries.
