Right! Read my post above... I would help out low income people on Facebook groups. Go to them to fix their vehicles. No markup on parts, $50/hr flat rate. Doing the job honest, right, etc If I replaced a part that I said would fix it and it didn't I would eat the cost of the part, etc. My labor cost is the lowest in the county except for the illegal Mexican guys who will do work for anything, but you get what you pay for. Then I had a customer have me do a full brake job. I charge $50 per hour, flat rate, me being a mobile tech before as my own business, I wouldn't inflate parts, I would just tack gas useage into the cost of parts. Longer I have to driver to the customer + to from parts house I would work it in to the cost of parts while keeping Labor at $50/hr. So I made no profit on parts. You know it's all about beating the clock. Lets say 550-650 for 4 wheel brake job and I get it done quick, but the invoice says the flat rate hours charged. So the customer decides the bill is too much as it didn't take me that long as the invoice states. Gives me $80 for labor, tells me to leave her property, calls the Sheriff's Department on me for trespassing, etc. Sheriff's tell me I have to leave because it's a civil issue, I know. I thought about putting a mechanic's lean or small claims court, but A) She didn't have the money once I won the small claims+filing costs, $495 to file, $35 to respond, blood from a rock, and B) Cost more to file, etc than worth the loss. That's the day I said I can't do this anymore. I want a real shop job. It wasn't the first time this happened to me. That's what I get for offering Mechanic Service on Facebook local group's, doing the job honestly, right, not a part's slinger, if I replaced a part and didn't fix or needed I'd eat it. Plus I charged like 1/3rd the price of dealers / other shops for basic Light Repair and Maintenance. ###

I diagnosed a woman's car years ago. We had a flat rate for that. The woman had the car somewhere else and they couldn't figure it out. In ten minutes I figured it out and told her the problem. She didn't want us to fix the problem and complained about the fee saying it only took me ten minutes so her fee should be less. I told her it didn't take ten minutes; it took fifteen years for me to learn how to do it in ten minutes and I reminded her the last place didn't figure it out at all.

All true but remember Ladies and gentleman at the end of the day you have to live with yourself and personally I don't want to be a man known for being dishonest or unfair I would rather loose some money and time than take advantage of someone I mean let's face with the knowledge and ability many of us have in this business it is very easy to take advantage of customers who don't really have the ability and/or understanding of what we are doing They are counting on us to sell them what they want/need we as professionals can flat out lie to our customers and tell them they need X amount of work/labor even if they don't. As for me I have determined that I am not going to do that to anyone. If they are dishonest and try to rip me off in the end all of that circles back around trust me it really does.

I once installed a customer supplied used manual transmission in an older Nissan pickup. The customer paid his bill and left, but came back later hopping mad because his backup lights didn't work. So, I put it up on the lift and checked the trans backup light switch, which was fine, so I lowered the truck, removed the tail light lenses to check for power at the bulbs. NO BULBS!!! At this point the guy accuses me of stealing his bulbs! Right. Like I have nothing better to do than to spend 20 minutes of my time stealing two 50 cent bulbs! I calmly installed two new bulbs, rechecked the lights, which worked fine, drove the truck outside and wrote him up for my labor and two bulbs which he refused to pay. At this point I told him to get in his truck, leave and to never return. There truely are customers that you don't need!

I had a customer in the boat service business that I actually told I just couldn’t afford to have him as a customer anymore with the free work and discounts. He refused to pay for hours billed he only would pay for what he thought it would take him “ in his younger days” and what he remembered parts cost him then. I encouraged him to be there when the work was done, I showed him my invoices for his parts and it wasn’t good enough. So I voided his last bill and asked him never to call me again.......one of my happiest days ever.

I learned long ago that you can never reason with an unreasonable customer. When they blow up on you, you just have to bite your tongue, let them blow, and listen. You can’t even attempt to reason with them until they come back down to your level. I’ve used this technique when I’ve needed to and it does work. Great video addressing an important subject. Good job man!

Shortly after I opened my first repair shop, a guy came to me with a Ford 4x4 truck from a referral. I gave him a price on an upper motor rebuild. The truck had 40 something K on it but he hauled horses and needed more power. So along with the motor he had me put headers and dual exhaust on it with a better breathing set of mufflers. (Much of what he wanted was specked by his neighbor who owned an auto parts store). I did the work. He drove the truck. Came back smiling from ear to ear and paid me in hundred dollar bills. 2-3 weeks go by and I get a call from a women who is screaming at me about her loud exhaust. Well, I was in Rochester, NY. so I had probably done 40 - 100 exhaust jobs from the time I had opened. I ask her if she has the receipt number so I can look up the job, since I didn't remember ever putting loud exhaust on any women's vehicles. I look it up and it is this truck I had done a ton of damn near FREE work on. I told her that her husband had brought me the mufflers to put on the truck from their neighbor, Gary Schnable. She didn't care. Wanted me to put quiet mufflers on the truck at my cost. Her husband came by the next day apologizing. That didn't matter to her. She took me to court!!!! Her husband came with her and they found some rookie lawyer and they were laughed out of court. BUT,,,, I lost him as a customer. Don't have any idea how many people she told that I was an asshat AND it cost me for a lawyer and my time!!! Some people are just crazy.. In hindsight it would have been cheaper for me to put a set of Walkers on it, but hell, I hardly made anything on the job to begin with and HE brought me the mufflers I used!!!

As a building contractor I have had my share of unreasonable customers. I feel you man. After years of playing Mr. nice guy, I have finally learned that there are always unreasonable people out there. Some are out there just to get you. Some might have had a bad experience and we just get the fallout. Some might actually have a legit reason going off on us. As biz owners we need to take a step back, breath and do the right thing and NOT take it personally. That's why it's called business. You're right not to fight the customer. The loss far out ways the win. But, as biz owners, we still have it better than slaving for the man.

I rebuilt a 4.0 Jeep for a guy I grew up with . He didn't have any money either . He had a bad crank and it was already bored .060 with very little wear . I gave him a crank and a rod , then gave him a heck of a deal on the job . He installed his carb and it was screwed up and overloaded the cylinders with fuel . The engine had oil smoke . I offered to HELP him and pull the engine and put new rings in it , he said ok . A few weeks later he sued me . We went to small claims court and presented each side of the situation . Again agreed to fix his engine . Never heard from the man again . Who knows . He was one of those unreasonable people .

This is a good honest video. Thanks for sharing it. Sometimes customers are just dishonest. Sometimes they know just enough to be dangerous. Sometimes they damage it themselves and blame it on the shop. You will run into these kinds of people in various types of business not just in the auto repair. Some of them can be real jerks. Some of them can show how stupid they really are. I would always try and educate the customer before doing a repair as best I could to help ward off the why did it cost so much, or why does this do that, or why can't I do this with that and that sort of thing. I have even fixed things for free to save from being blackballed. Last Keep a record of the bad customers and next time they come in you may want to ask them to go somewhere else for service or course in today's world you may find yourself in a lawsuit for refusing service. Sometimes you can't win no matter what you do.

Worked in the service dept of a very large dealership for years. Saw many customers like this. Management mostly would give in and do whatever to make them happy. In most cases...okay, but in quite a few of them, I felt they'd have been better served to run the person out and not do business with them. They are just unreasonable for no reason, and you're better off without them. Many of them came back and caused more issues. I remember one dude with a fairly new truck...used it for construction. Had his worker drop off a flat tire: Had 14....yes, FOURTEEN nails in it. I called him with the price of a new tire, and he wanted to know why it wasn't covered by warranty. Seriously? He came in, raging. Manager didn't give in that time, and he eventually left. Came back many other times and was more reasonable, because he knew what he couldn't get away with. As far as the lemon....some woman bought new Probe from the dealership I worked at around 1990....had some problems. She hung lemons all over the car, and wrote on it "XX Ford sold me this lemon" and slowly drove up and down the road in front of the dealership, all day long, lol. She'd even park in front of the place for awhile. Eventually the factory rep was there and saw her, went out to talk to her and got her to stop. Cliffs notes: People are crazy.

I am a self employed mechanic from Toledo, Ohio for over 45 years, Toledo is a very big small town, everybody knows everybody. The best way to learn is from your inevitable mistakes ( on cars) but the problem you describe is not about cars, it's about professional thieves that steal from working class skilled labor I disagree with your policy, although it's embarrassing to admit to a mistake, it's not a crime to be wrong Your an excellent teacher and I enjoy your video's very much ( they are outstanding) , you offer a great value to the community, that's all we can ask of you. Why in the world would you minimize your value to your community ? why in the world would you give your after tax dollars to a fool because you don't meet his standards? He is just going to put a sign in the window of his Astro van anyway, the same guy probably holds a sign at the street corner for free money as it is. If you don't want the service I offer than I don't want you as a customer, end of story, move on, there are not many people with your skill level that want to work anyway

Some of this is exactly why I only do work for people I know, and know well. I do restoration work on cars and pickups, my overhead is low enough that I do not need to deal with everyone who walks in off the street, and I love it that way. I do all of the work myself, with an occasional helper, don't have to explain away any quality issues ever, the price is agreed to beforehand, and the penny pinching nit pickers can go bother someone else. They are not worth the time.

Working on other peoples cars is the worst some times. I was an electrician for 6 years and have had customer make death threats towards me. I had a customer bring in a 85 C10 Chevy that was really beatin to hell and back. He wanted me to fix his door triggers so his dome/cabin floor lights would work. Replaced triggers (they were coroded badly), all worked fine. During the check in process I noticed he had like, 1 gauge cluster bulb working. All the others were burnt out. So I noted it down, with all the other damages/ things not working. Fast forward, customer comes, picks up the truck and leaves. He called 30 minutes later cussing me out over his gauge cluster bulbs not working. Told him they weren't working when they came in. He called me a liar, cussed me out more. My supervisor gets involved, he tries talking to him, and at that time the customer threatens to kill us. Over gauge cluster bulbs in a ratted square body. Supervisor tells him to never come back, and if he does, Phoenix PD will make sure he leaves. Phoenix people are crazy. Glad I don't live there anymore.

As a frequent Paypal user, I can say say that I rarely paid taxes on a purchase, and NEVER got taxed on a refund. That guy sounds like he's got issues. Seriously. My human relations instructor, who's got a degree in clinical psychology, would say that's someone with a "personality disorder". Some people swear up and down that the world's out to screw them, paranoid personalities and whatnot, and there's no persuading them otherwise. Her biggest example was a student in our college's automotive program who came to her saying somebody stole his tools. When she went to the auto instructor about it, a short witchhunt found they got moved to the "spare tools" room, and shop policy states any lost or forgotten tools get moved there after classes. He still swore up and down that someone tried to steal his tools and they "somehow magically showed up after everybody went on a hunt for em". These people are out there, and their rationale is so thin that they're barely functioning adults and all it takes is one problem or inconvenience to send them on a tirade. The best you can do is just try to make it up to them and don't let them get to you. I'd recap on the "just make the customer happy", but really some people are next to impossible to please, and most organizations have a set limit for a they can do for resolving customer issues.

I just cancelled my USCCA coverage because of a minor screwup on their part. When I first signed up, they allowed me to register my CCW so that when renewal time came, I'd get a notice and not get behind the curve renewing my license. I bought their best coverage, it was something like $52/month. Somehow, my info got dropped from their system and I discovered they'd failed to notify me when I was going through my wallet. Now, I'm going to end up in limbo for a period of time, all because I didn't begin the renewal process soon enough. When I called to cancel, the gal I spoke to reminded me of the free training they offer and even suggested one of the less expensive plans.. Never once did she ask why i was cancelling.. If she had, I'd have explained to her that it's worth $52/month to me to have someone to call if I find myself involved in some sort of shooting event. The part I have trouble with is if they can't even handle reminding me my renewal time is here, how can I trust them to be available should I ever need to make that call? I really enjoyed their service while I had it, but this is something so important that I can't take that risk. Luckily, there's others out there who do the same thing. They can expect to hear this story when I call to sign up.

I can take the wreck out of car or truck BUT I can't take the wreck out of head ! My trick to dealing with excited customers when I wrote service, would take the customer into my office. There in my office behind my desk was a big mirror across from my desk was chairs for the customers. The whole time they were ranting they were seeing themselves in the mirror, let them rant ! They see how they are acting, especially if their spouse is with them. the spouse calms them down.

Go to the top manager, be firm and insistent, do not swear or name call but sometimes we have to talk loudly in front of a group of customers to get fair treatment. lucky most business dealing are fair and happy. I can be the customer you remember if you treat me dishonorably. As a customer I do not want something for nothing, all I want is what I pay for.

Collision repair tech painter, we run into worse , because people are already mad they got into an accident, then they have to deal with insurance companies, so we typically get the brunt of their anger, heaven forbid if we are human and or have a product failure. IF you can say hand on heart you HAVE done the best you can to do right by the customer and then that same customer then goes ahead and creates an issue in your shop, on social media or at the local bar etc ...... Unfortunately these kind of people have sometimes had a game plan to get YOU to pay for their shit from the beginning! I have been in the mechanical trade a similar amount of years and have been running my own shop for several years. As many reading these posts will know this is NOT an easy way to earn a living. Some of us do it because it's a passion within us more so than a way to make us rich ...... ( if you are legitimate and honourable it may NOT!) I have had several customers attack me , my wife , my business over the years and for almost every one of them we had gone over and above for and made very little money from. By the time we settled the matter and moved on we honestly would have been better off going home and drinking beer all day ... and been better off financially and emotionally?! Sometimes no matter what you did, some people cannot be satisfied. It may be because they are to sly, too stupid or too damn arrogant to listen to what you have to say and sure as hell are not interested in doing the "right thing!" I mean the customer is the expert right?? isn't that why they brought their shit to you in the first place?? :) Old iron is my passion. Have learnt a few tips myself thanks! Kind regards from down under. Keep up the good work!

Haha, I work in an industry where we deal with retail clients and have had a couple people in our showroom that haven’t even bought anything act like that. Nd like you said, sometimes it’s best to tell them thanks but no thanks. I’ve even had to call the police once because they wouldn’t leave our premise and they were disrupting our showroom. Some people are effing crazy and you know when to walk away and know when to run!

I had a problem with many customers who don't know what they are looking at and don't know a single thing about mechanics at all. Just because someone has a kitchen draw with "India" tools and watches a show they think they know it all. I was a Harley engine builder/mechanic for 20yrs and because of idiot customers I left the business and now work on bikes and cars just to sell, "as is, where is." One time at the shop I was truing a flywheel assembly. Truing early model HD flywheels seems pretty brutal to the clueless. You have to smack them with a lead hammer (as not to dent) to bring them into true. Well, a customer who was with my boss getting the tour of the shop saw this and started to rant how "that's not how you do it!" It wasn't even his. So, I calmly explain to him that I've literally done hundreds of them and indeed it is how its done, he would have none of it. It got to the point that I went and got a HD manual and showed him the page with a photo of a factory guy, in a lab coat, doing the exact same thing (btw, the photo had the guy making two mistakes 1- using a ballpeen hammer and 2- doing it on the truing stand, big no-no). But being a jerk and not wanting to admit he had no idea what he was talking about wouldn't relent. So we threw him out and told him if he ever came back...well, it's a bike shop so imagine for yourself. Later, we got a call from another bike shop and was told the guy went there and complained about us and was being a jerk there too, they also banned him. I've got a bunch stories like that, it's a shame there's jerks like that.

There's zero guarantee that of any kind that a person won't still trash you on whatever social media they can find even if you go above and beyond. I woulda wanted that motor back long before I gave him a single dime back. Now that you have some years under your belt, do you still believe the dealer sold a lemon? Or maybe that owner was a demanding a-hole and the Ford dealer said he was having none of it? AT BEST I woulda refunded the money minus the parts I had into it. That IS FAIR.

Well from my perspective, or at least my rule of thumb, when dealing with someone I would buy something from is to first, to check them out as well as I possibly can, and if I do have a problem, I will contact them. Although, if they are giving me a refund, and letting me keep the item, I bought. I would not have any problem doing business with them again! It is the seller's who will not work with me, or if I were to have repeated issues with, that I would just not use again! A couple of those examples are O'Reilly's and NAPA. Which an example of O'Reilly's is I bought a engine hoist from them, and kept telling the guy that was doing the checkout the actual price of the hoist, and even his co-workers were stating I was telling him the correct price. Which he didn't listen too, and sold it for less then 100.00 to me when it was a 150.00 item. Well the problem arose when he called me on my mobile phone, while I was at work, asking for my card number, that way he could charge the remaining amount to my card, so he didn't end up losing money off his commission on over the fact he did not listen, and charged me the lesser amount. Which I wasn't about to do, because we had stated the correct price to him, and he wasn't having any of that, and looked it up on the computer. Which it was listed below 100.00 in their computer system. Moreover, this took place a few more times from them, and I stopped using them. Now with NAPA I would order my parts online, and when I would get there, they would not have my order ready, or they had robbed an item from my order to fulfill another order. Which either way, they would then try to sell me a more expensive part, to replace the part I had already ordered. Which, then, I would just tell them to forget it and go somewhere else to buy the parts I needed! However, I stopped dealing with O'Reilly's and NAPA after a few different times of them repeating the same issues more than once! Which is why, I deal with online parts providers such as RockAuto, or A1Auto for example! So as a customer, it is extremely important, to give the benefit of the doubt when a seller is willing to deal with you. Due to the fact, a buyer can get a bad reputation just a quickly as a seller that doesn't want to work with a buyer. Since with online sites such as eBay keep track of buyers who are unreasonable, and continue to harass sellers after a refund or problem has been resolved. Same can be said if one is an unreasonable buyer, that has it way of getting around. Like from one parts store to another, or even restaurant's, the reputation of a bad customer has a way of getting around! Especially if one threatening to come deal with a business in a total unreasonable way!

In Aurora Colorado there is a ford dealer owned by a nasty guy with a big hat and belt buckle(everyone knows him). The things he has done to customers and his behavior when on the consumer radio program are legendary. Some bad apples go on and on. why anyone deals with them I just don't know except maybe they crave abuse.

I have been working on and building computers for people for 7 years. I remember when I ran into my first person like this and it almost made me quit, but I have learned they are just out there. My first was a friend of the family and it really bothered me, because I thought he was a great guy until this happened. I couldn't please him and he was always calling me and I was always over there. The really bad is there was nothing wrong with is computer. He was just a crazy know it all I could not do anything right for or please.

Your a true gentleman. I sunk over 20,000 in an engine recently. Check my videos. Head bolts torqued wrong Rocker stud came out, 3 others loose. No assembly sealer used on rocker studs. Sump leaking at rear Interferrance sounds in motor The build says its not his issue. Engine was put in project car and sat after his dyno time. He says its my issue . So i have published it on youtube, he denies any responsibility. Australian engine builders most are arseholes, this is the 3rd motor stuffed by a builder or engine tuner. 70,000 out of my pocket in 10 years. Im so angry but they dont give a rats here, just low lifes promise the world and under deliver

On that bargain engine sale, out of state, for sure you got into a situation where you had to lose some money. With 20/20 hindsight maybe an even better way to handle 'Mr 48 cents' would have been to offer him 2 or 3 choices. If he did really want it gone and you had to eat the return shipping that's the more expensive / time consuming option for you, but at least he might have shut up. I've had a customer (not engines) who I offered a return and he said no he wanted to keep it but at a reduced price (Ebay). Some people you just can't please, customers from hell, but they do force you to be really specific when selling stuff, like saying maybe the block was good but the heads were an unknown quantity etc.
