How To Deal With Fat Haters
One of the big reasons why some people are a little a little nervous about cycling out on the road is because they are worried about what other people may think of them, especially if they don't quite have the form of a chiselled Adonis.
They mistakenly think that people are judging them for not being super slim, partularly if they are wearing skin tight lycra cycling kit.
The good news is that most times 'other people' have better things to do than worry about seeing a less than slim cyclist whizz past them for about half a second.
However, not everyone has this attitide. There is a very small minority of people that might look down on us cyclists because we don't look like a skinny whippet. The truth about these people is that it doesn't really matter what you look like, they just want to make people feel bad and they will use anything at their disposal to do it. If they aren't making someone feel bad about their weight, they would be doing it about something else.
These fat haters are pretty sad people and us cyclists need to respond to them in a mature, classy way.

Mate I hold you in awe for trying to keep fit and making your videos whilst also struggling with weight. Some people are so pig ignorant. On my morning walks here in WA I see any different sizes and shapes of cyclists and walkers/runners and always feel more admiration for the ones who are more weight challenged. I got abused the other day by some lout in a car shouting out “get off the f.....g road”! And all I was doing was cycling with my son on a quiet side road leading down to our local estuary. So the pricks are everywhere Leonard!👍😎🇦🇺Still loving the channel.

Yep, had the same thing. I was 110kg when I started cycling, now I'm 85/86... when I was heavy people laughed at me and making fun of me when I was climbing, I once heard during climbing: "Come on fatty..." Now I lost weight I'm not that slow anymore... not even uphill. One guy said to me last saturday after I dropped him: "It's not fun to cycle with you" I know it's not good to do this for others, it's important for yourself... but shutting people down or receive these kind of comments remembers me how hard training is paying off. Leonard, you're a hero! Keep up the good work, cycle if you want... it's your life and you must be happy. F*ck them.

Even though I‘m 25 and have a rather thin to athletic figure, I‘m pretty sure you‘re putting out way more power and endurance than I will for years. Besides that, overweight people in a sports environment deserve the greatest amount of respect anyways. Thanks for your videos.

Thank you for this video. This has been something I've been dealing with as a fat cyclist. Down a bit of weight since I first started but still got some extra. I'm sure I've been had things yelled at me as I biked past. These days if someone does call something out to me I'm towing my daughter or acting as a support rider. In both cases, I've got better things on my mind than someone who can't see how much I'm working and how much fun I'm having. Again thank you and keep it up!

Very well said, I was told the other day to literally get off the road and go find a park, after we had a discussion about him running a stop sign and I almost hit his door. Someone said something like that to me in a very crowded public place when I was 13. As a result I spent several decades of my life obsessing over my weight. It hasn’t been easy figuring it out, and I can’t tell you conclusively that what worked for me would work for anyone else. I’ve always exercised a lot and still do, but that made me fit, not thin. When I finally hit on the right eating plan, I lost weight and have kept it off for over 10 years. I’m not going to go into the details of the diet here, but would be happy to share that if asked. It is easy, natural, and safe, and I’m not selling anything. And, what works for me may not work for you. I ride my bike to stay strong and fit. And I love sharing my love of cycling. You do too. That’s why you run a KZbin channel. That’s why we watch. Thank you! Keep up the good work!

I’ve been yelled at and called names by people in cars before but the last time I rode on the road I was going down a hill about 40mph quite fast paying close attention to what I was doing when a truck pulled up next to me. I just heard shouting, all the sudden I was hit in the chest with a bag of McDonald’s food and I almost lost control of the bike. I have been made fun of my entire life, bullied in school for years, ect. I really haven’t been affected by someone calling me names in a very long time but that incident I felt scared, emotional, and just kind of freaked out. I was scared to ride the road after that, for almost a year my bike sat. Finally I found a town nearby had built a bike path on an old rail line and now others are popping up all over as well so I’ve been back at it the last few years and all has been good. Thanks for your inspiring videos.

Happened to me on the first ride after I got a new bike after years of not riding. I thought to myself, "Yeah, but I'm doing something about it." Almost 3 years later I am still doing something about it. A 4-5 hour ride will burn off a pound of calories. My leg muscles have more definition than they ever did. I get compliments about them all of the time. And the reduction in appetite that accompanies a long ride is miraculous. And the continued calorie burn at rest is the icing on the cake.

I took up cycling 6 years ago at 52 as part of a fitness regime, which has resulted in a loss of something like 6 stone. My point is that when I first put lycra on I was very self conscious however the encouragement I got from family, friends, other cyclists and my local cycle store far outweighed any comments that anybody directed at me. My favourite quote was from one of my sons who said he had more admiration for the fat bloke in the gym than the fit bloke for having the courage to do it and doing something that is so welcoming of everybody else.

We have not run into any problems but we try to stick to mostly gravel and tough trails. They're friendlier and very few vehicles. Last week we did a " road' which was MTB territory. Took 2 hours to do 11K. It was steep and treacherous in places. We ran into 2 jeeps and an excavator who we have met several times as he is working up there. We stopped and had a pleasant chat. Our legs were like jello at the end of it but it was a really fun afternoon. It was a challenging ride but not an overwhelming one.

I do not wear a skin suit, but I keep on doing sports and will probably start with road cycling this or next year. I got just 1 comment about my weight, probably even an honest one by a retired nurse married with an MD. My reply was just a smile and: "Thanks for your remark and concern, that's why I go on with skating. I've lost already 37 kg (over the last 2 years) and will go ahead!" Im 380 pounds (27stone ish) Im 6ft2 and large framed. I move well for a wide fat guy but i have had this walking my dog. But no one has EVER said it to my face. Only shouting fat 'so and so' out of a car window as they disappear up the road. Im not an aggressive person and not suggesting i would physically harm anybody, but really, i believe they are children in the playground that just forgot to grow up and just bully people to show off... If i were to listen, not only would i suffer, but so would my dog. BTW im about to start my cycling journey, but on a trike. I did try a bicycle buy my balance is awful and actually a tricycle has its advantages, i can run most of my errands without using my car. Im looking for a total lifestyle change here. Thanks for all the vids, a very down to earth channel with very interesting topics. 👍

A trike sounds like a great idea if your balance isn’t great. Good luck with it.

You are showing your age, saying emerdale farm,as I think it became just Emerdale in the 1990's . I love your videos mate,as a very keen cyclist for the past 40 years, I love what you are doing for the simple and very gratifying thing that is riding a bicycle. Albert Einstein apparently said that seeing a grown man on a bicycle gave him hope for mankind's future.

Very well said Leonard. I never see someone as a fat cyclist or a thin cyclist, all I see is simply a cyclist :-) Completely ignoring these type of people is by far the best response.

Hi! I love your videos. Thank you so much it's great to see more diversity in cycling. I have a question. I'm currently looking for a wheelset that allows me to run smaller tires (nothing crazy, just sth like a 28 or even 32). The wheelset needs to be somewhat affordable and very robust. The weight is secondary (I think 32 spokes would be sufficient/appropriate). Do you have any recommendations? Or just generally anyone in the comments? Thanks!

Hi Theresa, unfortunately I’m not really a wheel expert but hopefully someone on here might be able to help. For what it’s worth, I use hand built 32 spike wheels in my Soecialized and they work great.

Hi Mr. Lee, I actually have this very problem from the waist up. A riding buddy saw me putting sunblock on my legs a week or so back and told me "Good lord, those are GI Joe legs. (GI Don, actually.. I did serve twice) but that's where the similarity ends. I've got quite the bubble hanging off the front. I sure wish our personality got the attention, not our tummies. Mine looks like I'm just short of 7 months pregnant or so. Ride on, my friend. Haters be darned. I am not riding for him.. or her.. or them. I'm riding for me. And you. And all of us. Thanks, very inspirational. And as always, very well said

For me, the most important thing is to not let them spoil your enjoyment. It is them with the problem and the bitterness will remain with them. I like to focus on the positives.

I literally had to pull myself off the floor from dying of laughter ! I did feel bad! And honestly it was hard but I dealt with “fat haters” was by loosing 40lbs . People suck! But a lot of my aches and pains as well as my hypertension resolved so maybe it took abuse for me to just stop eating too much for Lycra . Thanks for the video you are the best!

HATERS will always HATE. Period. I commend you for even being out there riding! I'm watching this and I've always been thin (59 years old, 5'8", 140 pounds). And on the contrary, I ADMIRE overweight people that I see doing anything fitness-related. They are the folks that are doing something about their situation rather than just continuing on with their lives status quo. I just hope [the overweight] don't go home after exercising and feel the need to "reward" themselves with a 3000 calorie meal. That is tragic. To the assholes, just wave and say Thank You...that pisses them off even more! Be safe out there!

Personally I don't get offended when people call me a fat so and so. I was 20 stones (125 kg), I am now 17 stones. I only want to lose Weight to get up those hills faster and easier! I'm trying to get to about 15 stone. A very relatablel channel Leonard, keep it up!

I like cooking and food and wine but I recognized that we eat a lot out of habit, boredom or just without thinking. I have been eating only once a day for about 3 years and I am not suffering, at all. The body and mind get completely used to it. And the stomach shrinks naturally so you feel full very quickly. I use vitamin pills as a supplement. Just my 2 cents.
