What is Jet Lag?
Jet lag, also called desynchronosis and flight fatigue, is a temporary disorder that causes fatigue, insomnia, and other symptoms as a result of air travel across time zones. It is considered a circadian rhythm sleep disorder, which is a disruption of the internal body clock.
Besides fatigue and insomnia, a jet lag sufferer may experience a number of physical and emotional symptoms, including anxiety, constipation, diarrhea, confusion, dehydration, headache, irritability, nausea, indigestion, difficulty concentrating, sweating, coordination problems, dizziness, daytime sleepiness, malaise (a general feeling of being unwell), and even memory loss. Some individuals report additional symptoms, such as heartbeat irregularities and increased susceptibility to illness.
Children and babies can also suffer the same jet lag symptoms as adults.
What are jet lag symptoms?
Generally, people do not need a medical evaluation for a diagnosis of jet lag. If you have travelled across several time zones and feel the symptoms associated with jet lag, you likely have it. If your symptoms of jet lag are severe, do not go away after a few days, or you have any other concerns, see a doctor.
How long does jet lag last?
Recovering from jet lag depends on the number of time zones crossed while travelling. In general, the body will adjust to the new time zone at the rate of one or two time zones per day. For example, if you crossed six time zones, the body will typically adjust to this time change in three to five days.
Jet lag is temporary, so the prognosis is excellent and most people will recover within a few days.
Complications of jet lag are extremely rare. If a person has a preexisting heart condition, the stress of the disruption in the circadian rhythm, combined with the stress of travel, the high altitude, and immobility during flight may result in a heart attack. If the jet lag results in chronic sleep deprivation, a stroke may occur in certain predisposed individuals.
But see more in the video about how to deal with jet lag :)
Thank you very much for your time!
Wishing you all the best!

@@GermanAviation No it just means that the last alcoholic drink should be planned for at least 12 hours before your next scheduled check in time to prepare for a flight. If the flight pilot has vodka in the undercabin hold there will be no way to get to it in flight. (Boeing had a variant of the 747 designed to allow for customer (carrier) changes directed in terms of added seat level cargo pallets but due to the fact the South African national carrier was a noted customer of this for embargo reasons they scrapped it.)

i don't think flat earthers are stupid. it is good that they question what we are taught to be truths, but the problem is that they ignore all evidence contradicting their theory and join groups of people who think like them (confirmation bias). it's like a religion. There are no scientists in these groups either, which should be a hint to flat earthers..

Next time you toss the flat earth plate away, add a sound effect of it breaking up as if it were china hitting cement. LOL My procedure for eastbound jet lag from the central timezone in the US to Europe, where we typically arrive in the morning, is to go immediately to sleep. This helps me finish the nights sleep. When I wake up, I go outside and explore the city on foot and have a late supper. Usually I sleep in late the next morning, but am over the jetlag without wasting precious vacation time. West bound travel back to the US isn't usually a problem.

The point about food intake is spot on! Always used to have a big nourishing meal in order to shift between day and night shift. Seems like a reset button, from my experience at least.

Short question: A few weeks ago I was onboard an Avianca A320 flying from Bogota to Punta Cana. Durning Startup (I was seated at the very last row) a very strong Fuel odor feel the cabin. Resulted very rare to me since that wasn't my first time on the last row on an A320. Do you have an idea what could cause the odor?

@Pablo Air conditioning bleeding from the engine should be closed until this is at its nominal regime. If this was open during the start up of it, as the fuel mix is richter while starting you might have smelled it.

Bascily the air conditioning is getting air from the engine and on startup fuel is bleeding into the engine which is from where the air conditioning takes the air from then because of the fuel it creates a odor

I found that a 12 hour difference between Germany and Hawaii was way easier to adapt to than 9 hours to California. Thanks for the tips, I'm going to need them for my trip to New Zealand soon!

Good video, Joe, but how about the "Don't adjust!" method? If you're flying somewhere for only a short trip of, say, a couple of days, then don't bother adjusting at all. Stay on your schedule and eat, sleep, exercise etc. on your home time. With stores and restaurants open 24/7, you can get up at 3am and go have a meal and go to sleep at 7pm or whatever works for you. You'll be traveling back home soon so no adjustment is needed. I think I've heard of film & TV people doing this. Joan Rivers lived in NYC and flew back to LA every week for work and she kept to her own schedule, for example. (She also kept clothes, pets, etc. in each city so no luggage to carry.) It might make for odd-hour meetings and meals with people at your destination, but it's easier for you. Have you done this for flights of fairly short turnaround, say 1-2 days?

That is what I do a lot. I am based on the west coast but my manager is based on the east coast of the US. I just usually just work on east coast time which means I am done with my day by 2-3pm local time. However it makes it easy when I fly to the East Coast on business because literally I don't have to adjust.

Within Europe this is viable as the most you have to worry about is 3hrs which is also the US East/West difference. It really starts to hit over 5 hours, or Trans-Atlantic. Personally I can do UK to New York (5hrs) either way without effect, but that's just my metabolism. Beyond that and eastbound, I have a big problem.

Not every country has 24/7 stores everywhere like the US seemingly has. In Germany, at best, we have one 24/7 store inside central traffic hubs of cities like a central train station or anything like that, so that tactic doesn't work everywhere.

I like to set myself a small task to get myself out and about that first jet-lagged zombie day. After my last long-haul flight (Vancouver to Sydney via Auckland) it was buying a USB charger for my phone and iPad. The second day is usually the rough one for me. The first night I'm there I'm so tired that sleep isn't an issue. Then it catches up with me.
