I think the main problem where backlog's stem from, is just buying more than you play. So we end up with 100's or more/less games over time, though we still continue to buy. The last point is probably the most effective for the whole backlog thing in general, which is essentially just to not buy anymore, or significantly cut down in doing so. I'm a massive hypocrite, because I always tell myself I won't buy x game, but another one always turns up somehow in my head. I don't actually buy new releases anymore, simply down to the fact I don't care as much about day 1 games and the RRP as well. £70 is waaaaaay too expensive, I can't do it to myself. Other people can do what they like, no problems, but sorry, not for me. Next year, which is quickly upon us anyways lol, I hope to not buy anymore games for quite a while. I'd love to go a whole year without buying, just play everything I've ever bought and see how much I can finish, but we all know how hard it is to resist deals that pop up lol. That's the goal anyways, hope I can do it. I do think though that not buying games in general, is probably the best piece of advice you can give to a gamer. Like you said in the video, you literally don't need to buy every game you see, they won't cease to exist from stores, or just get up and leave your house either lol, so just take your time with the probably massive amount of games you already have, whether they're physical or digital or not and restrain from the urge. Here's to hoping I take my own/your advice.

I've been watching a good deal of these backlog videos lately and I must say this was one of the best ones yet: funny, informative, nicely edited, not too long. Can't wait to check out more of your content! And by the way, I also thought making videos would be another way to help with the backlog, but after spending a good part of 2022 playing PS3 games that I already finished for... ahem... "this video I want to make", I can 100% confirm that "starting a KZbin channel did not help at all!". 😅

I'm probably older than you, but I had 15 years off gaming. I play on PC, but Steam has a lot of those same facilities, and you've persuaded me to use them more creatively than by simple game category. For me, the big lesson I'm still trying to get my head around sounds phenomenally obvious: play the games that excite you. Example: I own all 3 Witchers. I've spent 30 hours on W1, not finished it, but it's really not that good a game. Yet I've let it stop me playing W3, which everyone seems to consider one of the best games ever. I've abandoned W1, now I just have to decide whether to play W2! My other big failing is those endless games, though. They are comfort, and they eat play time, thousands of hours' worth. My new strategy is to try to only play them at weekends. Weekday evenings are for making progress. Maybe that'll help. Anyway, thanks for the tips!

I know exactly what you mean! I forced myself through the first uncharted before I played any of the others even tho I really didn’t enjoy it. Life is too short for that 😂 Hope your new strategies work for you and you enjoy your gaming again friend! 👍👍

I settled in the end for a "high priority" category of no more than 10 games I *really* want to play or finish (eg Mass Effect 2/3, RDR2, Outer Wilds), in the hope of eliminating choice paralysis; then a "medium" of up to 20 more (things like Fallout NV, Subnautica and Psychonauts), strong enough that I'm not afraid that once I finish the first list (LOL) I'll have nothing to play. All the rest are in categories (abandoned, completed, low priority, sequels etc) which can be summed up as "don't even think about these for now". Only time will tell if this does the trick! 🤞

Thinking about that point about "running out". Another part of my problem is feeling I have to "earn" a game I have high hopes for by playing something I'm not as keen on, or that I have to "save the best for last". I could die tomorrow, why the hell do I do that to myself?

I try to mix it a little bit. First i take a game i want to play but afterwads i play a game from my backlog. That way i am not playing only new games or only old games.

I think you need to remove the comfort game section out of there and. Not engaging them. They are extending your backlog time obviously. Plus you can be stuck playing them again for too long And more games you like will come out adding to your backlog. I would also tackle shorter games first dnd then the games that are most likely to be spoiled because of popularity next

I do something similar with categories on Steam. I have a "Meh" category for games I'm not likely to ever play but don't completely rule out of I just don't have anything else to do and I have an category titled "Uninstalled and Stay that way" for games that were just bad, made me angry, or have severe performance issues.

This was so inspirational. I have been pushing this kind of organization in front of me for years. Do you know of any sites that let me list my games across platforms? (I.e PS4/5 and PC) I am beginning to feel worried I am buying duplicates sometimes.

Try infinite backlog is easy to use and you can add manually games, playtime etc
