Watched both videos. Ron's had the best weathering. Eric used a techique I had not thought of previously. Wrap the entire side of the car. Love them both.

Ron, just finished watching both. While his wrap looks good, you got this one easy with what you did with the car in regards to weathering. Nice job to both of you.

Wow. A whole lotta work just for one car! Weathering seems like a very difficult and time consuming project! The cars turned out great!
@RonsTrainsNThings4 жыл бұрын
Difficulty of weathering depends on what effect you are trying to simulate. For me, I don't weather every car to the same extent. That wouldn't be prototypical anyway. Most of the cars on my layout get a light spray of a fade coat or dullcoat, a bit of rust on the wheels and trucks, and they hit the layout. I refer to this as fleet weathering. A handful of nicely weathered older, rusty, grimy cars scattered over the layout keep things interesting to look at, so a few get this kind of treatment.

Wow, great job on those hoppers Ron!! I usually use black chalk for the grimy look. When I apply decals I'll use a hair dryer to help it conform to the contours.

I know you work in "N" and this my not happen for you but I have had yellow and red decals fade into the green paint on the car. Would raising the pixals help stop this " translucent " effect? Nice video on how to thanks. Bob

Hello Ron. I am just starting out and want to know what is the purpose of using form board on the layout and why so thick?
@RonsTrainsNThings4 жыл бұрын
The foam allows you to carve contours in the scenery below track level in a way that is difficult or impossible when laying track directly on plywood. It gives you greater flexibility in your scenery options.

Hi Ron, I love this channel so much. Random question for you - how do you do your turnouts? Are they manual or do you have switch machines under the layout? I'm planning out a yard right now and about to purchase the track. If at all possible, I'd like to avoid the Atlas turnouts with switches mounted to them, as to me that really ruins the look of the layout, especially at N scale. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks, and keep up the great work!

Hey Ron I got back into model railroading I am 19 now and the last time I worked on my scenic ridge layout was when I was 13. I cleaned all of the atlas track and it still never works right. What kind of track do you use on your layout because I’m looking to expand mine. And I don’t mind switching from atlas.

I use Peco track because it is rock solid and super reliable.

I was thinking the other day, as I saw an IRL train, "I wonder if any model RR folks use graffiti to weather their trains."
@RonsTrainsNThings5 жыл бұрын
Yes they do. There are a few vendors who make extensive lines of graffiti decals, and I know a few artistic types who do their own with fine paint pens.
