Weathering Techniques in N scale Part 1

I liked the beginners technic to weather a car, with the price of rolling stock as it is, it is the safest way because until you seal your work you can remove the pastels. I do a lot of weathering just a tip I bought a PC board holder I put my car in so I never touch the car again till I seal it. Once the sides and the top are sealed I can take it out and reset it to do the ends. On doing the trucks I just install cheap wheel sets in and rattle can with earth tone camo paint. You really did a good job explaining using powder.

pastels are safe - but you can get some really nice effects with them. and just like the other mediums, the more you work with them the better you'll be. while it's the easiest and the most forgiving, i don't want everyone to feel it's a beginner method. in conjunction with the other methods, the effects can be stunning. i'm going to have to look into the PC board holder - or gloves, or something. i made a mess and had a couple places where i fingerprinted wet paint! (i didn't show that... the wonders of editing).

I have found a real quick method of fading the paint - instead of dull-coting the car, I spray the car with a "Frosted Glass" paint I got from my local hardware store. A light coat of this just knocks the shine off the car and also fades the colour,

any problems with the paint adhering directly to the model? some of these plastics are so smooth, i worry there's not enough 'tooth' for the paint without the dull coat.

I’m 7+ minutes in and it’s just a lot of talking and barely anything on the screen. It’s just frustrating to have to wait through a lot of talking, hear it’s a beginners video, but not even talk about the pastels that you said you started with, which seems to be the beginners method. Either way, try to get to the action sooner and have examples of what you’re talking about close at hand. I don’t think it’s important to talk about getting an air brush so much, just show what you’re using it for. I also see that you used the dull coat, but didn’t show yourself doing it. I think showing what you’re doing is the most important.

ok, so remember in the first minute where i said this was an intro to weathering and if you were a more advanced modeler it might be worth skipping ahead - that would be the part where you'd skip ahead. but then again, you want me to take the time to show you how to spray dulcote on a model from a rattle can, so maybe starting off on at the beginning of the video wasn't a bad idea?
