But the size increases due to which density of charge decreases and thus stability increases...
@jacelemke3006

Size increases though, in acid and base reactions we focus on electronegativity AND size instead of just on electronegativity.

Sir ..compare to CH3-and, Nh2 - some teachers told me Nh2-which is more basic than ch3- because Nitrogen having lone pair of electrons ...so I have doubt sir can you please explain sir?
@IITJEEChemistryCourse
@IITJEEChemistryCourse 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Saravanan, CH3- will be more basic than NH2-. For questions like these, think where will the negative charge be more unstable. On the C atom. Another way to think about it is by making their conjugate acids i.e. CH4 and NH3. Now, it is easier to take out H from NH3 than CH4, or NH3 is more acidic compared to CH4. Hence their conjugate bases will have the reverse order. Due to the lone pair, NH2- will be a better nucleophile, but as far as base strength is concerned, CH3- is stronger.

OH is a better lewis base as it has higher electron density and is relatively less stable than H2O.

Sir at 7:53,Stronger base between OH n SH ,negative charge was on H & S.....right? n not on O as as mentioned(Atom carrying the charge ) or have I understood wrong?
@IITJEEChemistryCourse
@IITJEEChemistryCourse 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, Negative charge is on O and S. Negative charges in any species are usually present on the more electronegative atom (in this case O vs H). H will have negative charge only in the hydride ion( H- ).

Five minutes into your video you are comparing stability with basicity. You said that the farther right an atom is on the periodic table, the more stable but less basic it is. Please correct me if I am misunderstanding, but you said that -NH2 is less basic than -OH despite that oxygen is farther right than nitrogen. Shouldn't it be the other way around?
@IITJEEChemistryCourse
@IITJEEChemistryCourse 7 жыл бұрын
NH2- is more basic than OH-. That's what I've said in the video. The basic strength is opposite to that of stability. So, OH- will be more STABLE than NH2-.

Re-watching your video I am seeing my misunderstanding. Also I had very little sleep while watching your video due to studying for an exam so my sense of judgment and understanding was poor. Thank you for the feedback!
