You three together are a amazing combination! Dawn's way of getting people to consider how living with less equals freedom, Cas's ability to explain organizing styles (not everyone is a cricket as pinterest would make us believe!) and Dana's practicality in how to get it all done without being overwhelmed is truly going to change people's lives!

Dana, it's so nice to meet you. (You too Cas) I tried your method today. I'm tired (lots of trips to the car and the basement and the garage). But the area is clean and there are no "piles" in my way! What a game changer! I'm a messy person, but one step at a time and I can do this! I feel so accomplished.

I remember watching Dawn use Dana's method in her entryway closet. At first, I saw her struggle with the concept of taking each item to it's home. In the end it worked out fantastic and Dawn was so happy at how well it worked. I've watched Cass for awhile too, but I'm brand new to Dana's videos. It's so neat to see you ladies team up to try to help us that have the same issues. The struggle is real! Good luck with your new venture! You three make quite a powerful trio!!

I come by it honestly. My dad always said "This house is a trap." Move one thing to use it and a million other things fall down or have to be moved first. Nothing is easy! Same with my house. Nothing is easy. It's time. Laundry today. I have so many clothes I can go much too long between loads. That makes laundry WEEK a nightmare. Wash, dry, donate. Pilly? Toss. No, I don't need that many dust cloths! Us older folks come from parents of the depression. We are retraining past generations! And preventing the next. Like therapy, don't pass on your issues. Fix them.

🦸‍♀️I am a grandma helping with care for my twin 16 month old and 5 year old. I am in the beginning of my decluttering/ minimizing journey. I am so happy to see you three together! You are some of my favorite ladies to watch. I have learned so much. Anyway...I have never commented before, but I have to share this. I got inspiration from Cas and her cosplay idea. My 5 y.o. granddaughter is really in to super hero girls right now. She will run around the house saving us from monsters and bad guys. We already have a reminder on Alexa that tell us to drink water every hour during the day and no matter what she is doing she will shout out "Time to drink water Grandma!" So I got the idea from Cas to add a reminder on Alexa that says "put on your super hero cape and do a 5 minute clean up to save us from the Messy Monster!!" We have only done it a couple of days now, but it has worked wonderfully!!! We will put on our pretend capes and tidy up quickly saying "the messy monster isn't going to get our house!, etc." and she gets into it and usually keeps going after the 5 min timer goes off. I sure hope this continues because so far it is great and the twins will join in also. Thank you so much for all the great tips and inspiration. Love you ladies!

The trick is this is not an "organizing" program, though you'll end up organized...according to YOUR instincts. It's freeing because your house doesn't have to look or function like anyone else's. Most organizing means buying a system of containers/shelving and forcing your stuff into it. This actually works kinda backwards where you use what you've already got initially because you're putting things where YOU would look for them (eg Dana keeps her nail clippers in a kitchen drawer, not the bathroom. And that's okay. That permission alone blew me away). Then what you system you need in each area (if anything) will surface and you'll purchasing the cabinet or containers for your actual needs. The type container/container system isn't the locus of the solution. Your actual needs (after declutteting) for how you use a space are...and then moving forward, the container keeps your clutter on check. I'm midway through this process, and am amazed and pleased at the progress in just taking down all the low hanging fruit. Best wishes on your journey!

I'm going to have to think about my mindset about costume. I am allergic to dust. When I vacuum or dust (or do anything that disturbs that layer of stuff) I put on the type of goggles people wear in house renovations and an N95 mask. Or else I get a splitting headache that takes days to get rid of. But all this time I've been feeling like a victim, like I must look like an idiot, like how stupid it all is. And I think I need to use my imagination and instead imagine that I'm an astronaut on Mars, collecting samples of Mars dust, moving slowly in my bulky space-suit, doing a job only a few people outside my specialty understand. You guys. You have given me a real gift of using my imagination in new and different ways - thank you!!

I do one thing at a time. I'm trying to organize and minimize. I did take two days to take down lights and all the Christmas totes packed up in the attic. It took me one day to clean and organize under my husbands sink. The next day I did my sink. The next day I cleaned and organized our double vanity. Today Im dusting and organizing my closet thats in my master bath. Its been a trickle down effect. Its like oh thats clean so what is the next mini project. I have alot to go but I feel Im progessing!

Same here. The only thing I don't like about it is by the time I finish other things I have to start again. For example when I was lazy to do all bathroom in one day even though it wouldn't take more than half an hour i did only bath next day only sink etc. By the time I did the floor instead of enjoying the clean space the bath had to be done again 😓

My brain still thinks I'm in a 20 year old body and can go from sun up to sun down, so I put too many expectations on myself and when I don't get much accomplished I feel like a failure. I think your method of one doable task a day is the way to go. If I only expect to get one thing done and actually do it, then I will feel accomplishment instead of disappointment in myself.

As a visual merchandiser, I have been through many stores and had to declutter in order to complete big projects. The entire store might be a mess, but sometimes the project getting completed is more important than the overall appearance of the building. So, I learned that focusing on what I need in order to get the project done, means that I narrow my organization and decluttering focus. So, when I come home and the entire kitchen is chaos, I focus on what needs to get decluttered in order to make: a cup of coffee or dinner, etc. As a person who had to commute and work outside the home for long hours, orienting my organization by my daily habits/tasks helped me gain efficiency and work through these projects more quickly.

When you were talking about the glow bracelets, I can really relate! I used to be the one who would think, "I may have a use for that in the future," but then I had this light bulb moment that if I could replace that for one dollar, that meant I would be "paying" one dollar to store that. I don't want to "pay" to store $1 glow sticks. The shift from viewing it as *possibly* saving $ to everything has it its own monetary value and translating that to a storage fee in my mind made it easier to pitch stuff.

When I was in counseling, my counselor talked about transactional analysis to explain the different aspects of your personality: the adult, the parent, and the child. I was overwhelmed, especially at Christmas cleaning the entire house expecting all my husbands family. The counselor explained that my emotional child was doing the work. Children don’t do housework. Either the emotionless, just the facts man, list the jobs and do them adult does the work. Or the caring, I’ll take care of the family parent does the job. If I started feeling overwhelmed, I was to stop, tell my child to go play, and decide whether the adult or parent should do the work. It was weird talking to myself that way, but it worked! Being overwhelmed is an emotion and has no place in doing housework.

Put misplaced things into the room/area where they should be. If that area/room is already decluttered, then put the item away. If the area/room isn't yet decluttered, put the item in there, and deal with finding it's final home when you declutter that room/area. Don't get caught up jumping from cluttered area to cluttered area. Focus on one area at a time. Dana's system is amazing. Can't wait to learn more in this course.

I am so grateful for Cass's approval of the question "Where would I look for it?' because I've always used that through my life. However, the thing that has stopped me going further with decluttering is the thought of the pile of mess it makes. Now I know there's no big pile so that, combined with the "Onion method" have all got me into action and I'm on my second pass through the house. I still fill the car with bags within two days of dropping the last lot off! I'm loving the clean look of my house, and it's getting better every day. You three ladies make a brilliant team and are the answer to my prayers. Thankyou!

I am listening videos about decluttering and cleaning for a year now and finally I have my house always cleand and organized. (But I started the process 3 years ago, with my clothes). I can't believe it's so easy to me now to mantain a "perfect" home all the time, while in the past I was thinking it's soooo exhausting and I would never be an organized person (becase I never was before).

I was a middle school and elementary teacher for 24 years. I retired 4 years ago. I gave away a ton of classroom supplies to children and coworkers, left supplies for my replacement teacher, decluttered and organized the room for her, and still took containers, books, teaching materials I'd labored over, and writing supplies home. It was overwhelming to see how it all cluttered up our small home office, so over time I let it go. Much of it I had a sentimental attachment to, but I made myself go through it- decluttering 15 minutes or 15 items each time, like peeling the onion. I have to say, I dont miss any if it. I had saved about 50 pens. Just went through them, and half had dried up,haha. The office is now a sewing room, and I couldnt be happier! However, I now have to periodically declutter and organize my fabric stash, lol. Love you ladies! I am grateful to the Fly Lady, Diane in Denmark, Do it on a Dime Kathryn, you ladies, and all the kind You Tube people who help us keep things under control Cass- dont put things into 10 different piles, yes! The container sets the limits- yes! Baby steps!

Dana White, you system is great for us “instant gratification” folks. By the time I go through a “space”, ask the question of where would I look for it and take it there... the “space” is decluttered AND organized enough to satisfy the instant gratification reasoning within me. It truly makes more sense to me than tossing everything to have less. That comes later as things go out the door by asking your questions. Does that make sense? Your questions along with working through your system seem to align all three of you ladies solutions to having a clutter free, easier flowing, simplified home. Thanks to all of you!

I don't have major issues with decluttering, in fact I enjoy it (I'm more like Cas in that) but I think it might be because I instinctively do what Dana's method is...interesting. I think it will work for people! I will have to tell one of my friends about the idea, she is completely overwhelmed by her stuff and doesn't know where to begin and doesn't have time for major piles and trips to the dump/goodwill. You've stated the method in a way I never could have done myself even though it's basically what I do!
