As much as I like bright, airy rooms, I love cozy, darker ones just as much or more. Especially in colder climates, the snug feeling of these spaces is comforting in the long winter months when daylight is short. A room designed with dark in mind is like a hug, and the best hugs are those from people you’ve know through long association and times good and bad. Maybe that’s why items that recall memory make a person so much at home. No, it’s not for everyone, but give me rich colors, the smell of old books, waxed furniture, kindly faces regarding me from the walls, and the thump of a dog’s tail on the sofa.

Hello Doug, what a lovely descriptive moment. I love the idea of a dark room being like a hug! I totally agree. Even your descriptions of the old books and waxed furniture...takes me straight to my travels in Europe visiting antique stores!Thank you for watching our video and your support. Suzie x

Could’nt agree with you more! My favorite too! Although I must admit it matches so well with my dark personality, I have to have a ‘respite room’ for myself, something on the lighter side 😆 I went through the whole minimalist phase and although I am SO happy I did, I am older, and have many beautiful items that speak to my soul that fit into the Dark Academia style. I recently moved and bought a new home and will definitely be creating this style with all the treasures that were gifted or handed down. Great timing on this video.

Hi lovely 😍 for me, there's nothing like Color. Dark backgrounds highlight featured displays plus, adds such an inviting warmth. I realize today is hugely into Neutrals which I can appreciate and have engaged in, some 15 yrs or so ago but, my happiness is shown here in so many examples of Color. I guess you can call me an old soul! 😉 Thanks for sharing and love that you took a course in calligraphy, Suzie! I learnt as a child growing up. We as a family have pretty Cursive handwriting, and we would practice all the time both Combined, for our family good times. I cherish those memories! ❤️ love and hugs

Hello Gina, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the video and for sharing your mutual passion for calligraphy. The course was so easy to follow and calm and made such a difference knowing what tools to use to get the most beautiful results. In the store there are times when I need a beautifully written sign so have found the class super useful. My normal handwriting has gone down hill since I'm on the computer for most of my communication, but there is nothing more special than receiving a hand written invitation or thank you note! I hope you had a lovely weekend and look forward to chatting again soon. Suzie xx

That's fascinating. Having grown up around antiques from the 1780s (and documents and books from earlier) through mid 20th century (we're from Colonial family and Dad was award-winning 1960s artist), it's incredible to me so see these designs that span centuries integrated into rooms together. The challenge is to ensure warm, well-lit spaces at focal points. The best libraries always had them. And I love the accent of cleverly cut foliage and blooms from outside--which we still put into 1870s bottles, arts and crafts vases, kitty 1950s lemon yellow bowls....people don't realize you can cut evergreen and mix it with liriope blooms and butterfly bush spears and a range of foliage throughout the year. Old bottles are my favorite.

@@LV-bk4itthat’s not what minimalism is about… minimalism is about just having/owning the things which are the one you truly love. if you love the 100 pens in your collection or 100 books, then own it. minimalism as a decor style is something different than minimalism as a personal living choice.

This is the style that my husband and I like and I'm wondering how to do this kind of look when we don't have any interesting architectural features. We just have a cookie cutter american suburban home from the late 90s/early 2000s. Would crown molding and upgrading the framing around our windows be enough? That's a pretty expensive thing to do. We need to update the cabinets and drawers throughout the house too.

@@suzieandersonhome I didn't even know there was such design aesthetic. I bought a fixer upper. I am living in the apartment on top of the garage. The pain was a glossy purple redish. So to cover that paint I mixed the $5 reject paints at home depot with lime or plaster - I don't remember. But the result was a chalky/greyyish/dark blue. I like it. I think lime plaster creates a different vibe in a home. Then I made the Island with plywood and 2x4s. and I painted the Island with lime wash and the top I painted it with that same paint and I sealed it with polyurethane. And the coincidence is that a couch that I made myself had the same paint color...that ended up on the wall. I have so many books and I made shelves of 2x6 that I had sawn...very rustic...It feels cottagey When I saw that design aesthetic I said...I did Dark Academia by accident...but I love it. It is very cozy and casual at the same time. Feels like a cocoon and the paint with lime makes the house feel different than just regular paint. I am an empirical designer wanna be...but I don't do that bad.... There is my testament of a testimony....😆😄

According to your examples dark academia is reserved for the ultra rich. Those of us who live in common housing with standard 8 foot ceilings and little in the way of gothic paneling and arches are excluded. Pretty pictures, but not very practical in attempting to work out how to achieve the effect with regular architecture in standard housing.
@suzieandersonhome Жыл бұрын
Hi Kate, that's an interesting perspective. For me personally I don't find this style is reserved for the ultra rich, though it is rich in its layers. Most often, things that contribute to this look can be found in charity shops, roadside council clearances and auction houses and whilst affordable, they are also often better quality than the mass market 'seemingly cheaper' pieces, aimed at people on a budget. I think the combination of dark colours, opulent fabrics and trimmings make the look appear 'ultra rich' when it needn't be the case. I have seen the smallest rental apartments, where the owner is a student, achieve this look, albeit without the gothic arches and mahogany panelling! Thanks for sharing. Suzie

That obviously is quite a wide range of styles and materials: from modern, strict concrete structures to classic oak wood and historistic ornaments ...

Interesting video, but a significant number of the images do not represent Dark Academia but at best a very adulterated version of it. Dark colors alone don't suffice, especially if furnishings are sleek and clean-lined (or as in one photo, Art Deco!). What's needed is that mentioned romanticism -- tufted chairs to sit and dream in; a bit of the naturalist; a bit of the supernaturalist; a bit of the opiated poet.

Thank you for sharing! We agree - in the first part of the video on the Dark Academia colour palette we share the following: "The foundation of this style is the dark & sumptuous colour palette of ink black, earthy brown, charcoal, navy blue, forest green, and deep burgundy. These are contrasted with cream, gold, and muted orange tones in decor and textiles". Definitely open to learning more, and will make an effort to include a greater variety of photos xx

Is Ralph Lauren dark academia?
@suzieandersonhome2 жыл бұрын
Hello, Ralph Lauren has a wide range of styles from Modern/Contemporary Urban, Coastal, Vintage, Ranch, Heritage and more, which is why I admire his talent!.Elements of Dark Academia are seen in his more traditional country house interiors. Rich colours, warm metals, classic upholstery, traditional lighting, plaid, panelling, silk rugs and bookcases filled with books, trophies, equestrian and other decorative items. You can certainly draw inspiration from some of his interiors. Have a great week! Suzie x
@swaters51272 жыл бұрын
@@suzieandersonhome I guess that makes sense. I don't really keep up with all his products. I just happened to see some videos where people said "Ralph Lauren inspired. " It was probably 90s Ralph Lauren, lots of books, reds, blues, plaids, extra pillows, pictures. My guess is maybe English Country? I hired a decorator when I bought my first home. I was young and learned a lot but not terms. I guess I'm still trying to figure it out.

Dark academia isn’t black on black interiors 😭😭😭 Big companies like architectural digest, Hgtv and more, keep posting videos / blogs with black on black rooms saying it’s dark academia which continues to circulate the wrong information. The aesthetic is actually based on the interiors from the book “the secret history by Donna tartt” I made a whole video about this in detail. Anyways, just trying to save the bare bones of the aesthetic before it’s gone to the abyss of the internet
@suzieandersonhome10 ай бұрын
Hey Lanchen! Thank you for your comment. I don't recall saying that Dark Academia is black-on-black? In the colour palette section of the video we say the following: "The foundation of this style is the dark & sumptuous colour palette of ink black, earthy brown, charcoal, navy blue, forest green, and deep burgundy.These are contrasted with cream, gold, and muted orange tones in decor and textiles". It isn't our intention to circulate the wrong information as you suggest. Would you like to link to your video? I am happy to put it in the description box if people would like to explore this style more. Suzie x

Omg thank you for taking the time to reply!! I just want to emphasize my comment wasn’t meant to be a critique on you or your video in any way, I think the video is fabulous! I know you didn’t suggest black on black interiors but i just noticed you mentioned black as a main color and showed some references. As I mentioned, large companies are associating Dark academia with black on black interiors and it has snowballed from there. I know there isn’t much I can do about it but I figured if interior designers like yourself knew, it could potentially help dark academia interiors maintain their authenticity. No need at all to share my video but if you would like to check it out to know what I’m talking about you totally can 🙈
@@justlanchen Thank you for shring and it is definitely good to clarify! I'd love to watch your video. If you could link it here that would be great x

While your background information is accurate, many of the images of home interiors are not very dark academia- many of the interiors are too modern looking and the images are more like American home retailers like Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware. The Dark Academia aesthetic is more lived in and historic studies-think home of quirky Edwardian intellectual family. I’m older than the Tik Tok generation but my first experience of this look was visiting my brother at Harvard in the late 90s-his dorm was in one of the older (and thus more desirable) buildings and the common room had a fireplace, dark wood and wingback chairs.

@suzieandersonhome Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing Patrick! I can understand that. Could you please send through a designer that you think does it well? From what I could find, many of the Dark Academia interiors were AI generated, so it was challenging to find a large number of authentic examples.
