hardest part about defending is not the positioning but more about having the vision to realize where to position based on where other players (both teammates and opponents) are especially to utilize offside trap. also, even a bigger factor is how quick the defender makes the decision to make his move after reading the situation on whether to lead the attacker, intercept the ball, or press the attacker. positioning itself is just the basics and the foundation to good defending.

I studied Ruben Dias and he always tries to be in a line with the second CB until it's not an open ball situation. When a player with the ball is not under pressure and his direct opponent is ready to run in behind, Dias is levelling with the striker. If the ball goes in behind he plays it but if not Ruben immediately makes a couple of steps forward to put striker to the offside position. In the end this open ball situation continues only a couple of seconds until your teammate presses the guy with the ball or the guy with the ball switches the play because striker is either under control or in offside position.
