HOW TO DEFINE FRIZZY ROOTS ON CURLY HAIR USING A BRUSH

Styling with a brush for defined roots - the Manes by Mell Ribbon Curl Method. This method encourages curl clumping, so if that is your goal, keep reading!
1 👉🏻Make sure the hair is evenly saturated with water. The hair does not have to be soaking wet to style, but you want to make sure water is evenly distributed from root to tip.

2 👉🏻Product aside, it’s all about how you section your hair. The cleaner your parts, the more defined the curls will look - plus it’s easier to get in close to the root without grabbing hair you shouldn’t be.
📏 MEASUREMENTS 📏
Wavy Hair: The section should be about 1.5-2.5 inches thick
Curly Hair: The section should be about .5-1.5 inches thick
Coily Hair: The section should be about .5- 1/4 inch thich
3👉🏻Sandwich your hair between your hand and the brush, pressing the hair along the spine for perfectly smooth ribbons that will curl up with a little scrunching

@laurac86 you won't look bad, try it out! It will just take you a bit longer to get ready in the beginning. Right now, for me on busy days, it's just shampoo, curling cream and blow dry, really quick.

Product makes a big difference. That, plus technique. I use a brush sometimes for curl definition, but more often it’s just my products and my hands forming those clumps.

With the change in weather you might need to find a stronger hold gel. I know I'm having to be very particular with styling to make sure my max hold gel gets every strand of hair, if not that hair is def frizzy

I have a question! My curl diameter is about 2cm when it’s dry, but my hair is very low density so if I take sections that big I think it’ll join together too much of my hair and leave bald patches in between. I’ve never tried brush styling because I don’t have a brush yet 😅 When I tried joining together 2cm sections when style with my fingers, it seemed to create some frizzy roots because my hair didn’t like being in such large sections. It’s difficult to get the right section size with low density but loose-ish curls!

It’s a more generalized “rule” and it sounds like you like it best tweaked a little! Play around with it 🙃

Same here with parts showing! I’m rather thin on top, so although I use a brush sometimes, more often after gently brushing out wet tangles, I apply my A/G Recoil Curl Activator with my praying hands, forming clumps. It works better for me. She is right about applying product to roots to handle frizz though.

So is your hair naturally curly or straight? I keep seeing videos where people are wrapping hair around their fingers to get a spiral curl like that. Some of them are absolutely gorgeous and I have a hard time believing they got it to be looking like that with just wrapping around your finger

So after I'm done styling y hair, it's still pretty wet.i always use my towel to scrunch out the extra water before diffusing. Should I let it semi air dry first before diffusing? I always end up with stringy curls! HELP!!

Mine are like that too! My hair has to be about 3-4 inches then the bottom corkscrews and it will start to spiral towards the top. I am growing out a curl cut where she cut off most of the curl so I have these thorns sticking up everywhere 😢. I have Fine, fine low po, lower density hair.

It seems like Mell had two different approaches on her channel. The hairstylist videos like this one that show people different ways and techniques of achieving different styles. The second type is the more influencer-type videos where Mell shows us what she personally does. I like that she offers a variety of options, even if she isn’t routinely using them herself
