Is overpopulation real? Is Earth filling up with too many humans? How many people can Earth hold, anyway? As our species approaches 8 billion, human overpopulation is a major concern for many people. How can we reduce poverty and our impact on the environment? Do we need a forced one-child policy or something? Maybe not, because when we look at the science and history, populations seem to control themselves. This week we look at all these questions and more.

I agree about improving sex education in developing nations. I just watched The Philippines' Baby Factory on Al Jazeera's KZbin channel and it covers this topic. Many of my younger cousins who haven't finished middle school are having multiple babies because of the lack of sex education on things like contraception. It then continues the cycle of poverty, young girls staying at home to care for their babies without having finished school.

Nah its the idea of equality of sexes and the accompanying shift in values. If society is to value women on the same bases as men then they too must dedicate themselves to their careers. Thus having children later when sexual drives have diminished and they are less fertile. While this does bring down birthrates it increases the individuals consumption of resources. Honestly empowering women is a good thing especially in countries where they aren't empowered. However in some countries birth rates are falling so fast that the entire welfare state can collaspe welfare will likely be a fact of life as automation becomes more normal so the real question is do we incentivize stable marriages and raising children in wholesome enviroments

Nicholas Bryant empowering women (or better said, supporting women’s empowerment-because women are fully capable of empowering themselves) as part of implementing feminism and holistic human rights is great. Empowering women in the quest of some mythical“overpopulation” (which is rooted in racism white supremacist ideology) is shitty thinking.

"We tried empowering them in the US and the conservative politicians shut that down" Women have been empowered since they got the vote without signing for the draft. In 1965 white women hijacked affirmative action and made it favor themselves instead of blacks. US women are the most empowered and privileged beings on Earth
@forcelightningcable9639
@forcelightningcable9639 4 жыл бұрын
Think Again you think all the black, brown, and other minority women in the US are empowered like white women? You think despite their so-called “empowerment,” white women aren’t being marginalized when it comes to reproductive rights and economic equality, and don’t face gender discrimination on a regular basis? Think again 😉

Regdren That is true but if half the population suddenly disappeared then the rate of population growth would likely slow as well. And since several areas of the world are naturally slowing down in birth rates, the population wouldn’t recover for quite a long time. While it can be argued that a reduced population might try to quickly replace itself, I feel like that won’t be the case as at that point it would likely be easier for society to adapt to the reduced population then to attempt to quickly to bank to how things were before.

Glomo you'd be surprised how often its the mothers and grandmothers stopping them. Basicaly it comes down to "the boys don't get educated because they are working and the girls don't get educated because they are either working as well or are disallowed for one reason or another" reasons vary from country and culture. It comes down more to economics and opportunity than anything else.
@kenirainseeker539
@kenirainseeker539 6 жыл бұрын
"disallowed for one reason or another" yes, it's called sexism. It exists. Quit denying it. Empowering women leads to less birth because less of them are forced to give birth against their will. Less are forced to marry young, depend on a man and have kids whenever he wants. In some countries people are openly hostile to women and girls who seek education. A young girl was shot in the head for advocating for girls' education. Men are sometimes denied education too, sure, but they're not denied education because they're men. Women are very often denied education because they are women.
@iratami
@iratami 6 жыл бұрын
Kenni Raine yes mothers and grandmothers keeping their girls home to help around the house instead of going off to get an education that they very well may not use. Or son's being kept home to help make money to suport the family insead of getting an education. Yes so much sexism when the reason is more often than not, poor folks have more immediate problems than "are my children educated" I do highly doubt that many if any people keep children from getting educated out of malice or sexism. Especially with many other more obvious reasons that have nothing to do with sex, like class, income, availability of resources, economic incentive and the list goes on.
@iratami
@iratami 6 жыл бұрын
Kenni Raine as for the being "baby making factories" part. Thats just wholly inaccurate. Many of these poor and developing nations have a high infant mortality rate which incentivises having many children so at least some of them make it to adulthood to have children of their own. As conditions improve they will start having fewer children. Thats even addressed in the video

MsDavid47 He most likely knows, but due to him thinking too much about "overpopulation" it wouldn't phase him as negative at all. He most likely is too dumb to realize third world population is an issue and not first world, so the thought of keeping birthrates sustainable would never even cross his mind. That or he is the hero we so desperately need, infultrating the media and dropping pills sectretely.

@@MsDavid47 We the first world people are going extinct! In order to maintain a population number stable you need a fertility rates of at least 2.1 children per women! Now look at Germany fertility rates! Go look at South Korea fertility rates! Look at Italy fertility rates! Look at all first world countries and you will see our fertility rates are below 2.1 children per women! Africa and Middle East have an average of 2.8 children per women so yeah in 50 years there is going to be billions of African and Muslims and they will probably make up most of the Earth population!

Meanwhile underpopulation is starting to become a big issue. Hopefully we can fix the declining birth rate problem by the time we become able to colonize space.

There is NO country that needs more kids. Whenever a population has a birth rate below replacement level, that is a combination of the prevailing economic hardship of having a family, and the population having the religious and cultural freedom to limit their fertility. In other words, it is the free market being allowed to operate as it's supposed to.

This video misses a very important metrics. 1st Agricultural intesification andd extensification are totally dependant on petroleum. Eventually we will either lack enough petroleum to continue with these practices, or we will lack thw political cooperation required to extract it feom the earth and get itbto market. Second, agriculture in the United States is totally dependent on irrigation which comes from a 10 million year old aquifer that is not replenished. It is down to 10% if its capacity of 100 years ago. Third, all agricultural areas on earth contribute directly to the colapse of marine fisheries in that their nutrient rich runoff eventually ends up in major water bodies jumpstarting eutrophic episodes. In short. More people means more food, more food means more greenhouse gas, more trophic cascade, and more desertification. People who think the hunan demographic has not yet reached our system's carrying capacity, are simply not taking all factors into account.

Thank you! I needed some optimistic news today. The only thing that concerns me a little is that everyone has their own idea of how many people is 'too many'. Those of us who would prefer fewer humans and more wilderness are going to be 'outvoted' by whatever the average threshold of human behaviour dictates the equilibrium point to be. And I fear that will be, for some, 'still too many'. In case you're wondering, I hate the idea of living in a crowded city because I have trouble sleeping with noise going on, and I also need to get away from other people sometimes. I hope we can find a way to 'let the introverts breathe' in this brave new world.

You have hit the nail on the head. The world's economy is moving rapidly into the future, but the world's cultures and religions are still stuck in the dark ages. Glorifying reproduction served us well when infant mortality was high. But in modern times when almost everybody survives, having too much reproduction is like giving a big bag of candy to a diabetic.
@mosquitobight
@mosquitobight 5 жыл бұрын
@Angry White Guy There are two competing strategies to reproduction. The "R-strategy" species go for high population growth and voluminous reproduction, at the expense of little or no parental care. The best example of this is the insects. The "K-strategy" species have smaller families and invest more resources in the offspring they have. The best example of this is the larger mammals, including humans. R-strategy populations are vulnerable to devastating crashes when they exhaust their resource base or ruin their habitat, while K-strategists are in a better position to survive harsh conditions.

As a rule, it is more expencive for a society to treat a disease than it is to cure the disease, even if you need to spend money on developing a cure first. The cost of administering a cure is constant over time and only needs to be used once per person, while treating a disease requires repeated costs over time until the person eventually dies, and the more effective the treatment is at prolonging life, the more burdensome it becomes. Even if the cure is expencive, it's cheaper than continuous treatment, and will very quickly make up for the cost of development.

The anti abortion crowd feel it's a human life, FFS. To deny them that feeling is just awful. Why do so many people have to be ideologues? It's so sad.

Jason Dashney because the infant mortality rate is low, women do have to be sure they want a child, because it will take various resources even if sent for adoption. Ppl are living longer and living standards are becoming more uniform. Plumbing for example. This is a heavy burden on national welfare systems in nations s with welfare systems. The video is right. We have to figure out a way to scale adequate living standards across the world.

Fuc kYourAds Thats if we did it now where the speed at which we have invented things has grown exponentially. For the majority of human history inventions have been created to simplify a process (the entire history of the textiles industry is an example). If there were not a sudden rise in demand for something (for textiles it was brought on by the significant growth of the British populstion) or a drop in supply (the blackdeath caused a population drop which led to higher wages which leads to people innovating to employ less people) of another commodity it is likely there would be no need for the innovation we see today.

You don't have to "control" them. You have to teach them about the consiquences and if the people who rule these big industries agree with being more enviromental concious then even if some customers don't agree thats ok. I mean if they don't want to recycle 1)you teach them to recycle or you try to control them to do it (that bad for me) 2) you teach the companies (who are supposed to care) to stop producing plastic and start using bambo etc. then even if some stupid people still have bad habits the problem will be solved

I doubt overpopulation will affect us the way most people expect it to. Look up "The beautiful ones mouse experiment" by John Calhoun. The scariest part is that the closer we get to "utopia" the closer we get to extinction because without adversity/purpose we get bored and just give up on life. You can see this happening in society right now. Life is better than ever, yet we have so much depression and people are having way less sex than ever before. We have growing subcultures of people who choose to stay inside and not interact with other humans(herbivores/hikikomori) and people whose actions make them much less likely to procreate(MGTOW, increased rates of homosexuality due to reduced stigma, and incels) or those who choose a radical belief structure that makes them much less appealing to the opposite sex(feminism making women more masculine and feminizing men.)

India has a declining population though surely but the population pyramid of India is still upright. The only solution is one child norm, not even two. Two is the replacement number but one child halves the population. India should adopt china's policy. And also raising the minimum age of marriage of women from 18 to 21 so that women can atleast complete their undergraduate degrees before marriage. Many women (for example my neighbour who was married off while she was in high school) are married off early so there is always a chance of more than one child and on top of that, she is not highly educated. It is a fact that highly educated couples tend to have lesser children. Believe the me govt of India is doing massive efforts to spread the two child norm, making vasectomy free, distributing free condoms but a huge strata of the society is still below the poverty line and uneducated. Their only recreation is sex so people who live on the streets have 2, 3 even 4 children while nursing a baby. Also the 'I have to have a boy child' poses a problem. People undergo multiple pregnancies and childbirth just for a boy child. The citizens of India, though are an integral part of population controll regime, are not very efficient. It is time to take a strict action against the growing population by the govt.

Since we haven't run out of food and resources with 7,000,000,000+ people as predicted, why can't we adjust to the 9-12 billion that we are expected to peak at?!? With technology, we are learning faster and faster. We may figure out in 15 years what is expected to take 30-40 years to figure out. How many times has it been predicted we would run out of oil or other resources by now?!?

pretty simple way to feed more and more people... significantly cut animal agriculture and instead focus on providing large quantities of high-calorie plants to the developing world.

How would cutting out animals feed more people? Sounds like LESS food. Plants and animals equals more food, but having only plants sounds like less food. Especially if crops go bad and then there aren't any edible or nutritious plants. Likewise, cutting out plants and having only animals sounds like less food and less nutrition. Wouldn't both be better?

Kenni Raine - if millennials would get degrees in industries that are in high demand and pay well they'd have no problem with paying off student loans. It's nobody else's fault so many people get degrees in things that don't pay well, yet cost a grip to go to school for. The quickest way is to go to trade school, TBH. If you graduate high school and go immediately into the trades and become a Journeyperson you can be making really good money by the time your friends are just getting their batchelors degrees, and if you invest wisely you'll be doing really well by the time they get their masters.
@DaisiesInVenus
@DaisiesInVenus 6 жыл бұрын
Jason Dashney Another reason why Millennials aren't getting any jobs is because the Baby Boomers just won't retire and if they do, they want people with "experience" and won't give any Millennials a chance. Why should these Millennials give up there dream careers because these old farts just won't give up those High Paying rare jobs. Unfortunately that is why I didn't end up studying my Dream Career of becoming an Astrophysicist just because I didn't want to waste my precious years studying for almost a decade and then not get a job . This is why Millennials are effed. Also students loans, horrible economy and other factors. But like you said, it's best to just study something short, pays well and it's in High Demand.

This is just not accurate. We wont have to worry about overpopulation but we will underpopulation. We have no model on how to deal with an aging population but we do a growing one. The amount of people who go hungry has been shrinking not growing with out growing population.
