I screwed up bad in high school. I'd get suspended and go work in the lumber yard (rewarding my self with pay). Im a concrete carpenter and hydrovac operator now. I'm one of the only guys who reads books and understands extreme ownership (thanks to Jocko) on the crews BUT its incredibly frustrating at times (everyones hung over & dabbling with drugs). I'm currently reading a book by Christina hoff Sommers - "the war against boys". She just mentioned that being suspended ONCE reduces our chances of graduating high school by 17%. FML. I wish I had better leadership back then. BUT, I get up at 4am and get on the pull up bar. I just had a long walk with my working dog in the rain (GOOD.) so she can get after it early too and feel relaxed today. Discipline = Freedom. Im getting after it and have a plan. ...Also, just gifted the way of the warrior kid to my single mom friend and her young son LOVES it -"read me one more chapter" x4 :) She messaged me last night that she just ordered #2 & 3. My parents routinely make fun of me for not knowing the things they didn't bother to teach me. For example my mother always thinks that I don't have any technical skills in terms of construction work. When I was young she always told me this. When I wanted to help, she told me "don't bother, you are bad at this". So I only did construction things away from house. When I'm helping others they are grateful it's fun to do. But when I'm at home, I will only get negativity towards me when I'm helping. I get told "you're doing it wrong", so I ask "can you show me how then?". Then I get told to get out. Not even allowed to watch and learn. Just so that they can make fun of me later on. I don't mind. It taught me that I shouldn't help my parents because they don't want help from me. Got enough things to learn and do for my own life anyway.

to add to what Jocko said ~ while in college, my father expressed and i understood: you can enjoy booze, drugs, women, now..... - the easy fun - or you can focus on this degree - and the kind of fun you will have later in life. I know you dont see it now, but it will by far exceed those simple pleasures. hard concept to grasp in a young moment - but the reality is that - put in the work, and the payout later is boat houses and boats - not a day on a boat with someone you will never know again. Not a puff one night. not a hammered night. A life of choosing when your pleasure comes. And some if not most of that you will find is a job well done.

Challenging youths to use critical thinking , forcing them to attempt to understand and analyze all the decisions they make (and the impact of those decisions), is a big contributor to building confidence in themselves. Which, in my opinion, gives them the strength to start taking ownership and leading a powerful and meaningful life. This is one of the most important things a community, company, classroom, team, etc. can have, responsible leadership that knows how to take ownership, good or bad.

Jocko's videos always seem to pop up when you need that specific lesson the most. As a high school teacher myself, i struggle trying to convey this kind of message to my students also. It's sad to me that covid has ruined now the end and start of 2 school years. There was no closure to the first and there is no real "beginning" with this coming year. Regardless, im going to take the message of showing that ownership in both myself and to my students. That's the only way they will succeed and at the end of the day, that's all i want as a teacher, to see these students go on and achieve great things. Thank you Jocko and Echo!

I made some really dumb mistakes towards the end of last year that made me go in a negative direction and I just realized this week it was because I wasn’t writing down my goals. I just started writing down my goals for this year and looking at them everyday because it keeps me in check and makes me understand that I have to achieve small goals in order to achieve my ultimate dream in the long run. 1:00. When Mr. Willink states what am i not making clear that is making you still doing this reminds me of Mr Tay my former teacher for the 8am class in business college when 80% of the class didn't show up and he got in trouble with the head dean to which he was asked for the poor attendance. He came back the next morning asking how can he do better to encourage better attendance. I didnt thought much other than thinking its just the mindset my class mates (lazy) have but when i think about it( the other 8am class) the other teacher Miss Shermaine Oh, our form teacher didn't have this problem. Hence the difference that stands out is his character. Miss Oh shares personal stories not all good like the stupid stuff she did as a kid, her work life experience and trying to connect with the class on a personal level. I also notice how she always acknowledges me outside of class first all the time even when i didnt reciprocate. That level of relationship building despite holding authority reminds me of how Mr. Willink the commander at that time after the fire drill sticks around to collect brass with his mates despite having all the reasons, legitimate (excuses) of having meetings to attend to as the leader. (even they offered to let him go saying they understand) Outside of this Miss Oh conducts personal counselling for students after class 5pm when everyone is jaded and wanted to go home. She could have concluded class and just head home to her kids. But didnt. It was shown as i take a long to to gather my bag seeing at least 5 students waiting outside class each student telling their story which i knew takes at least 10 minutes to which she's just listening. I at that time was jaded and wanted to go home to nap. But for her which i didn't think much back then thinking it was part of the pay roll i was wrong. Yes i was sleep deprived but even anyone despite well slept or not just wanted to go home after that. And that level of relationship building is what Mr. Tay lacks. (But of course the leader has to balance and not get too close to the point he felts awkard maintaining his authority. Like how Patrick ben david has beer with his buddy and the next morn his buddy, the seargent is yelling at him. Better to maintain authority at first than ease into giving more leeway than the other way around.) (But then if we are all equals than what am i supposed to do? I heard from willink To be a good leader you must be a good follower.) ( So do i follow the teacher first or he meant i must listen to all my groupmates in a prject making them heard than taking the initiative to lead if none does. Just like how he takes a step back in the oil rig than shouts tactical movements since none is making the call all focus on their sights. Reminds me when he was at a practice at a desert and he was waiting for the leader to make a call when they say "enemy" and the leader didnt make one fast enough so willink shouts and everyone follows. Than afterthat he was pulled aside and the leader said non in a way offended Willink you got to lt me make the call. in that moment willink realised you cant step the the leaders toes.) ( i thought how this plays out in the business settings. Where theres no leader with rank but just one that steps up. Of course its a long story so ill just end this here edit later. But if i remembered correctly willink says to listen first but if the plan doent make sense you must take the indirect approach to question on your side of ignorance.)

I’m a closing manager and have been having a hard time wrapping my head around these young kids #1 not showing up, not calling in, walking off on the job because they had a spur the moment “religious service”, and taking their breaks per their social life schedule #2 having no initiative or interest to actually work, stay busy or ask, “what’s next?” #3 not even showing up on their first day The behavior of these kids should fall back on the parents and I cannot believe that these parents would actually allow their kids to behave like this....what kind of parenting have they actually done? They absolutely don’t care to work or do a good job. Go figure, I’m in an affluent Bay Area suburb and most families are intelligent and well off, but the way these kids act at work just blows my mind. They don’t understand that this first job will actually teach them valuable work/life experience. You can really tell who’s gonna make it and who won’t......now I sound like my parents when I say this: ”I can’t imagine what the world will be like in 50 years when these kids are running the working world....” my god. I’m gonna keep Jockos first response in mind and maybe it’ll get through to someone...I hope

That last story, I mean the teacher friend. It resonates. Violence brings violence, and our obsession about physical violence makes us sometimes blind to the incredible amount of suffering that made the punches and shit happen. Y'know. This is going to sound strange... I was in "Electronics Technicians' A-School" for the U.S. Navy, and we'd reached the "last chapter" of "Basic Electricity and Electronics"... "Solid State Devices". We'd also changed instructors... BUT on the final exam, 90% of the class failed... most of us didn't even get better than 40%... SO... our original instructor came back and looked over the tests, and he determined that our "new" instructor had neglected a bunch of the material, AND he arranged a two-week "crash course" to get through the stuff we hadn't covered in class before... thus admitting, "Yep, you all failed because we had failed you." ;o)

The CO is the "Commanding Officer", not the "Instructor"... which in the case of the "class that failed" was a civilian contractor, who stepped in to replace our original, an ET5... But nice try to test me. You have no year(s)... or you could look up where the A-school was, give or take the approximate dates when they stopped calling anything an "A-school" and went with "Tech' Corps" and then separated students into varying schools from there by their "Rates" (Navy-ese for "Means Of Service" or "M.O.S.")... BUT you'd likely only narrow down to two or three possibilities, as officers move around the services almost as often as the Enlisted... ;o)

Several electronic based rates were in Tech Core together, and then we split into our specific rate related material after, which is taught by very well trained military instructors. I would venture to say that not only were you never in ET A school, I'd guess you were never in the US Navy, or the military at all, since you had no idea what MOS actually stands for.

BUT if you can't understand that Rank/Rate works all the way from E-1 (recruit) to E-9 (Master Chief) then I can only assume YOU have NEVER IN HELL gotten through so much as boot camp nor read even a single guide on rates, ranks, or MOS in the United States Military... I am 32 now. I remember back in HS I almost got into a fight at the cafeteria, we threw food at each other and were about to throw hands but got stoped. They suspended me for 2 days and I thought it was really stupid way of solving the issue. I was a good kid standing up to a bully, I snuck into school in order to ask my teachers what the homework was going to be and I recalled them taking a breath of air as I explained what happened. How will screwing up my education is going to make me better? They should have made us do community service or something that would had made us pay for what we did.

Rightfully saying that the choices other people in my community make can equally impact my life. If my wife spends the income I worked for, on bags and makeup, this is going to impact us. If I choose not to work this is going to impact us. If a lady is being assaulted in an alley as I am walking by I can choose action on her behalf, or inaction on my behalf. Echo, same experience with my nice Grade 7 music teacher, who failed to read the room with my problem classmates, whom had no interest in music. Short version, he was away one day, and the sub did not show. Those same kids acted up, and trashed the music room, including destroying the teacher's treasured jazz records that he adorned the room. He came back the next day, and suffered a mental breakdown, and left the school after. Needless to say, kids are nasty.

What I have seen, unfortunately, are that alot of times the teacher's hands are tied. Discipline isn't allowed and/or the parents complain that poor Suzie or Joey shouldn't be disciplined, and/ or the principal won't back up the teacher. I am not a teacher. This is just what I've seen.

the 8:30 depiction of the guy on drugs makes me wonder what happened to him to end up that way. What if he was just assaulted or worse, raped or something and left there? Cops don't care. He's acting irate so he goes to jail. What happened to him doesn't matter at all. I don't have a criminal record but I've been in situations like that where I was the one to blame and they ignored every other thing that happened that didn't reflect how I ended up in my state. It was all ignored. I was reacting to what happened to me and they targeted me and made me into some sort of criminal. This happens a lot. Even with overwhelming evidence it's ignored and you're still charged. I was charged with threatening a crime, no less! I didn't even commit the crime.

Many times their parents had failed them so they never had the tools themselves. Their incompetence is then passed on to their kids and so on until someone finds the tools and break the cycle.

Also whatever classsroom ended up with tossable, whackable, functioning paper maché anything~ did not have a balanced glue eater to athlete student ratio going on. Wish I’d a had that type of segregation when I was in school, imagine how much glue me and brittney could have put away, the numbers on horses with broken legs and gunshot wounds would have gone through the roof!

@@mihabrilj152 Stoicism is pretty cool. If you don't know yet, you should check out this community on reddit (also on youtube) called NoFap. I know it sounds absolutely ridiculous, but after looking at some of the stories of the people who struggle with an adult film/fapping addiction, it really is a serious problem. I'll check out Dan Pete, Andrew Tate, Patric pat, and Coach EO soon. Edit #1: Alright checked out Coach EO, definitely true what he's saying man, girls just like bad boy qualities 🤷‍♂️.
