I really think Jocko needs to make his own clock, he can call it the Jocko-Clock. Instead of an alarm sound, its just Jocko telling you to wake up, and his tone starts with him speaking in a whisper tone, and progresses to him screaming to get up. $49.99.

1. Get an escalating alarm or set your alarm to a progressively louder song (Jocko recommends Iron Swan by The Sword) 2. Set your gear the night before. If you sleep with someone, get ready in another room to avoid waking them up. 3. Check your diet. Avoid carbs and sugar spikes. 4. Start working out before having caffeine. 5. Power naps. 6-8 minutes with feet elevated. 6. Get the blood flowing. Bang out 10 pushups, burpees etc. 7. Go to bed early. Go rest when you are tired, don't stay on your phone or on the Internet. Read a book to help you falling asleep.

I struggled to wake up early for years. It wasn’t until recently I found a solution that works. We all have hobbies or things we want to do but we put them off because more important things take precedence. One for me is video games. I like playing video games but I’m a grown man with responsibilities. How can I justify playing video games when I’ve got a long list of productive things to do? It seems like a waste of time. But then I sleep in for hours and waste even more time than I would’ve spent playing. So I’ve been getting up at 4 am everyday, playing video games for an hour, and then going on with my day. Yeah I might have “wasted” an hour playing games but now I’m up. I gained several hours I would’ve otherwise spent sleeping that I can now do more productive things. I do it every day so my mind knows first thing in the morning it’s gonna get that reward and it makes it easier to get up. Maybe it’s weak minded, but hey, it’s better than sleeping in. Also once you start waking up early you start getting tired earlier in the evening and it’s easier to go to bed on time and the cycle continues. Makes the habit easier.
@sb-in3qz2 жыл бұрын
exactly. im a dad so i have to get up at 430 to practice piano
@siebs.2 жыл бұрын
I know so many people might disagree with me or what not but hey man, if you find playing video games enjoyable or stress relieving or a way of escaping for even just an hour, then go play some video games. If they make you feel good and give you enjoyment, then it’s not “a waste of time”. Just because you’re not out there making money or whatever, doesn’t mean it’s a waste of time!

I had to seriously simplify my life to be able to get up early enough. I made a list of what I needed to do in a day/week. I put it in order of importance. 8 hours of sleep, workout, 8 hours of work, etc. When I ran out of time... that stuff got farmed out to my family members or I got rid of it - cuz it obviously wasn't important enough. But I know that I want to get my work out in before my work, so I have to get up at 4 AM, do a 30-minute scripture study/meditation, then I can work out. So I know I have to get up at 4 AM, to get 8 hours of sleep - that means 8 PM. So I'm up from 4 AM to 8PM. Everything has to happen in that window. The end. No arguments. That has saved me.

@@journeyfurthur6396 I agree. When I was making the change, I used an app (OmniFocus) to write out a strict schedule. I did things when they were scheduled, and did not vary. I need to tighten things back up this week because it has been a bit too loose lately, but I have a basis and that is enough to help me keep going. The nice thing is, you can always shift and rework when life circumstances change. My work schedule is changing to 4pm - 12:30 AM... that will change things, but I will still be effective.

Have you never noticed that type 2 diabetes patients are almost exclusively fat fucks? Crones symptoms are exascerbated by weight gain and diet. Everyone in my family has diabetes and IBS/ crones. My grandparents and uncle died from complications related. Organ failure, foot/leg amputation, etc. They were fat fucks also. Since I'm predisposed to it, I'm careful. They are 'curable' in the sense that if you treat it properly, it won't happen to you.

wow, I just happened to come across your podcast after doing research for sleep improvement and it is really interesting that Echo mentioned retraining your mind to think that you have enough sleep even when you have fewer hours of sleep. It kind of fits into the puzzle. I spoke to a lot of people having less sleep when they really had more sleep than they need. And don't forget about the effects of sleep apnea too. If you feel tired and sleepy most days then have it checked, correct the sleep apnea, and the time you feel more awake apply those things that Jocko said

One tip I found by accident for being alert in the morning... Within 15 minutes of waking up, drink at least a litre of water. I run a nearly identical schedule to Jocko's and that's the deciding factor on whether I drive to work tired or not regardless of whether I have a morning coffee which I usually don't. I never made the connection to carbs tho. I'll have to explore that. Also the power nap idea is amazing. 7 minutes has always been my perfect number. And I always set 2 alarms but I don't know why. Second one never rings. I'm a very deep sleeper but it's never more than 15 seconds from when my alarm starts till I'm standing. And I use the quietest alarm in my phone with volume on low. It's called discipline.

Love the idea about staging clothes. I do it. I also immediately upon waking turn on EVERY light. Screw it if it hurts for a second. Do it. Light helps tremendously. I do 40 push-ups and 20 air squats. Now I’m awake!

Key to waking up early for me has been Prep every needed item for the day ahead the night before Alarm at 4am: Keep my morning tasks simple and easy. I don’t bust into waking up at 4am and think I’m gonna go for a 10 mi ruck...I build my way up there from something small easy and something I’m not afraid of...

I was doing inventory the other day at work after New Years and I had pigged out big time New Years eve so I decided to do a 35 hour fast. One of my coworkers said he was hungry and I asked when he last ate and he said about 3 hours ago and I said "I haven't eaten since New Years eve. Weak" and he looked at me all crazy, lol. It's so liberating to be able to function without food. It's just one less thing to worry about on those days that are hectic and you can barely catch your breath.

I'm late to the party and just discovering Jocko. Love the advice, thanks or that! Regarding carbohydrates, he is referring to processed carbohydrates like sugar, flour, syrup, etc. Whole plant food is pure carbohydrates and absolutely not the same to your body as refined/processed carbohydrates. The only time you need refined carbs is any time you plan to burn it all off - like during exercise.

Do what makes your body feel healthy! I feel best on strict keto and fasting but people nagged me to the point I stopped, but this has been validating that it’s good to do what I know works for my body. Time to buckle down hard again

The morning process is such an enjoyable thing. When you really love the woman your with, and you enjoy building yourself while building a relationship with her. Entirely the most supporting action you can make. And those 8 to 6 minutes. for me it's more like 30 (I messed up body chemistry over 10years) so at age 25, That's a fact you feel like a ROCKSTAR.

For Alarms, especially when I’m traveling and sharing rooms, I use the soundtrack of the movie INTERSTELLAR for my alarms. All the music is very soft and cosmic.. I wake up 8 to 10 seconds after it starts floating in my ears..

I am a reconstructive surgeon and in surgical residency I had to wake up at 4:00 every day. I have continued that ever since and thank Jocko for advocating waking early. Getting your workout in and other critical things done while it’s quiet and there are no distractions is a great way to start the day. Unexpected things come up for all of us throughout the day and so it also prevents your workout from getting derailed.

Jocko nailed it with the alarm song suggestions. Iron Swan is my favorite track from the Age of Winters album 🤟 In my life, there is no greater source of pure energy than Metal. My build up alarm song used to be When by Opeth. If the first part doesn't wake you, 0:26 grabs you by the soul and rips you out of bed without a choice 😂
