I think in one of the previous videos you mentioned that a speaker driver is already limited by the frequencies of its "intended use". as an example. a midrange speaker has limited frequencies. same way as subwoofer also has limited frequencies. same with a tweeter, the only difference is a tweeter must be protected from low frequencies. from being damaged. so technically you can hook up a subwoofer with no crossover (without being worried about damage) that's from a safety point of view. keeping in mind that you did the wiring correctly so you don't damage your amp. I have a different question. but I wanted to make sure I understood you correctly. thanks
@chrishernandez2490
@chrishernandez2490 2 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is even though a specific driver "can" play up to a certain frequency, doesn't mean it should. The point of a crossover is to make sure it doesn't get to that borderline point of its "intended use" frequency because at that point the driver will be struggling and will not sound good at all.

HELLO THERE. I HAVE THE SCHEMATIC OR CROSSOVERS OF A SET OF BOOKSHELF SPEAKERS. I LOVE THEM VERY MUCH. I WAS WONDERING IF I CAN BUY ANOTHER SET TO MAKE A CENTER CHANEL SPEAKER. I WILL USE THE SAME CROSSOVER POINT ONLY ON THE TWEETER AND MID RANGE. BUT....I DO NOT KNOW IF I SHOULD LEAVE THE LOW FREQ COIL INTACT SINCE THAT THE CROSSOVER VALUE POINT WITH THE MID RANGE. I AM WONDERING IF BY JUST ADJUSTING THE CAPACITOR VALUE CAN I GET MY CENTER CHANNEL TO WORK. THANKS.

How do you respond to the GR research guy saying sand cast resistors affect sound in a bad way? is he full of it?
@Toid
@Toid 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. I would say that I haven't seen any tests that show an audible difference. However, I have seen a test where it does show that it is an inaudible difference. www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/replace-resistor-by-low-inductance-resistor-is-it-audible.12162/

@@Toid Yes i'd seen the forum thread you linked to but was not clear on their conclusion...would be awesome to see a blind test to see if listeners can hear any difference...because the charts dont always tell us everything (again according to GR research guy).
@Toid
@Toid 3 жыл бұрын
@@rickc2222 definitely would make an interesting video. It would have to be a double blind test. In the above article they found the greatest variance to be 0.02dB, which is inaudible. Danny seems like a nice guy, I have never met him or talked to him, but he does have upsells on all of his products, keep that in mind. Not saying it isn't objective, but I haven't seen anything scientifically that would show a difference. Maybe if I can ever get enough people over, I'll try a double blind test.

I would consult Tom the crossover designer at madisound. He is an expert on Leap XOVER design. This is a very involved complex issue to speaker integration and design. What is seen here is fundamental design of a crossover. The vid is like here is how to play the guitar!!! Been doing this a long time and I don't know my shit!

I was wondering.... With that hump at ~4.7kHz. Could you just drop the mid's XO point by ~500Hz or so (or go to a higher order) since it's above the XO point and rolls off afterwards anyways? It might require a slightly lower tweeter XO point to make up the difference, but it looks like it should be able to handle it, I would think with less components.
@Toid
@Toid 6 жыл бұрын
You could absolutely try that. That is the great thing about crossover design. There are plenty of ways to attack problem areas. :) :)

So, according to your other impedance vid, if I'm wiring a 3 way 8 ohm speaker, I only need to worry about the largest woofer for the over all impedance? The smaller mid and tweeter can be whatever ohms as long as they are crossed over properly?

About to hit the ground running, just trying to figure out how to start the Xover design, should i wait till box built and if so how measure all together? I finally got PCD working and i got what i think is a "ok" Xover starting point. Rather not order all parts for the crossover for it to sound like garbage.
@Toid
@Toid 6 жыл бұрын
If you want a good starting point, this is a good place to start. It may not be perfect, you will know more once you get the parts in and test it. Obviously, the best thing to do is to measure the speakers each individually in the enclosure. But if you do not have the testing equipment to do that, then you will want to do as many simulations to get it as good as you can. Make sure to check where your diffraction might be based off the size of your box. That will help tremendously.

@patrickrosington1174
@patrickrosington1174 5 жыл бұрын
@@drsauce2574 800hz would be for a woofer. Not a sub woofer. A sub woofer is way lower. Usually 150hz and lower. I usually set mine 80hz. To 100hz. Never higher. 80hz is a really good point though
