How to design a container with TEXTURE first

It's all about texture in this container. Start with one plant that you love, regardless of what its position in the container will be, and let that inform the rest of the plant decisions you make. Rather than starting with several plants that you want to use together, pick a hero plant and let it set the tone for everything else.

Great idea using a shrub in the center. I've been using perennials then planting them in the garden at the end of the season. It's so hard to get something at a reasonable cost for good height but this way I can tell myself it can be useful somewhere in the garden. 😊

Such great ideas! I have 2 big pots for my entrance and I will eventually have à center piece like yours in my front garden. I have had to learn to go big otherwise it looks lost. It is a challenge to find affordable big pots, then big enough plants. 3 feet wasn’t enough height and white does stick out. My house is pinkish bricks so burgundy goes nice…all that to say, it’s an art to create pleasing large pots! Thank you for this video!

I love your use of the lemony lace elderberry. It was my top pick for the Proven Winner Shrub Madness. I obviously, did not win. I hadn’t heard of the Plum Daddy alternantha but love the color and texture and will for it next year. I especially love when you said we could stop here but wait there’s more. Reminds me of Ron Popeil ;if you’re of a certain age you’ll understand. The urn looks lovely and it will only look better as it matures.. kinda like gardeners!

Our Angelonia (Blue w/a touch of White) is in its 4th Summer; We take it in (Zn 5b / West-suburban Chicago area ) over winter and it begins blooming in very early Spring. There's something about KZbin that seems to encourage the most extraordinary expansion - except in your case that tendency was already there but still...it's inspiring and breathtaking. This container already looks amazing. Great tip on keeping the grasses in their containers. Every year I try to mix it up with my containers...you just gave me some more ideas for the 2 main containers I have yet to plant. Couldn't find any Superbenas this year (and we have 2 certified PW growers in the area plus Home Depot), it's all good, will find and/or discover something else.

I'm glad to see you putting an elderberry in a container. I've dreamed for a few years of using Ranch and Nova elderberries in containers, but a nursery had discouraged me from doing so because they want shrubs put in the ground. Containerizing them is the only way I can fit them in my yard.
