What if the voltage supply to the load is much higher than the supply voltage of the op amp? For instance, if you were trying to measure the current to a load fed by a 48V battery.

Just make sure the tolerance 0.1 and better is important. The other part is check CMMR must be 80dB or greater. Offset error can be between 20 to 40% if you don't keep that in mind.

To use a comparator for a high-side current sense, it must have an input common-mode range extending to the positive supply. Your typical jelly-bean comparator does not have this capability. The TLV1701 does.
