Fantastic video, thanks for the tips. I'm curious about the wing loading in the big glider.

It's quite low. Roughly 450 sq in, 195g all up flying weight.

This video made me dig out my first editiion Model Builders Handbook given to me by my late grandfather in-law. One of the great things I picked up from this is How to Carve a propeller which I have carved many for my RC .60 size aircraft.

Yes a beautiful glide.. Thanks for a most informative video! When I was doing KK, years ago, I was surprised by the variance in weight of different rubber bands for wing attachment &c.. Keep up the good work!

So cool to see the Goose in good shape, can't wait to see its upcoming video. I started a Stott Cessna Loadmaster at 40" in 2017 and am finally trying to finish it up... might do a similar stab configuration.

Josh your Spruce Goose reminds me of the Martin Clipper flying boat that I built from as Cleveland plan,only flew it as a glider but it looked stunning floating around, love your huge rubber jobbie and the way that it floats,great informative video thank you sir.

Nifty, locating the fin at the side of the fuselage, so you get interference drag from one less inside corner!

Great video, even though I have envious amounts of storage space, my modest collection of scale rubber crates is a growing headache. Awesome glide! May I ask what material you used to cover the wings of the Dawn Patrol?
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn 3 жыл бұрын
The Dawn Patrol is covered in 1/4mil mylar, specifically resin dyed printing mylar. It's somewhat hard to find but does show up on ebay sometimes.

Cheers from Australia. Having visited the original Spruce Goose about 4 years ago a question comes to my head. Have you made some scale model beach balls to put in the wing floats ? Certainly a beautiful model.

How do we know that card is acid free ? I know that acid destroys the paper in old pulp magazines like 'Flying Aces' does it destroy balsa ? would this be called archival quality card ?

Joshua, what is the Wakefield (or Unlimited) aircraft? Are plans available? I'm looking for a large higher performance rubber plane (which might be RC/rudder) and that looks pretty good. Any comments on the performance? The glide looks good.

@joshuawfinn 3 жыл бұрын
That's a Dawn Patrol II, designed by Bud Romak. I sell full size plans and a short kit. It flies unbelievably well, best outdoor rubber model I own. It would go great as an RC model.

Did you use basswood on the longerons of that big plane?
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn 3 жыл бұрын
Balsa remains the best choice, with density selected to the task. Strength to weight ratio of bass is not very good.

What are the width and height dimensions of the fuselage at 8:20? And what size balsa is being used for the spars that run the length of the fuselage?

The Dawn Patrol fuselage uses hard 1/8" sq longerons and is around 1.5" wide and tall, tapered slightly at the ends.

@@joshuawfinn Thank you! What are the motor and propeller specifications used in that model?
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn 3 жыл бұрын
@@nickvinci6191 I'm running a 26x30 prop on 24 strands of 1/8, 90g. Bud uses a little less pitch and 28 strands. I believe Mike Kirda is using 28 or 30, low pitch, really quick climb.

@@joshuawfinn Great, would the flight time be increased by increasing the pin to hook distance and increasing the motor length (using more rubber)?
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn 3 жыл бұрын
@@nickvinci6191 possibly, but I doubt it. It's a highly optimized design built around a 1:1 motor/airframe ratio. Bud gets 14-15 minutes in dead air at Lost Hills with his.
