I’ve never used wing fall off dt but it looks light and effective. Having the fuse at the c of g is very sensible. Weight seems to be critical in P30.

Yeah that's an accurate assessment. I will say that up to 50g they still fly quite well even on thin motors, but you have to wind really hard (blast tube is an absolute must when winding a 4 strand motor to 10 in-oz). The 6 strand motors can take something like 20 in-oz which makes for an outrageous climb.

Beautiful airplane!

This reminds me of a Teacher's Pet. Similar formula with an elevated wing. Except the Pet balances at 100% chord IIRC. This looks like it may fly better than the Pet.

I wish I were as good as you in trimming a plane. Always good tips from you 👌

Ok Josh and Hope I finally got me one ordered for Dan in California And this video will help me trim it Thanks

You're going to enjoy it. One of the most competitive P-30s ever created.

Looks kinda like my One Night 28, except mine has a Gizmo Geezer prop. Nice plane.
@joshuawfinn3 жыл бұрын
Having flown both, the Saturno is quite a bit better. More stable, handles more power, and the airfoil is magic. ON28 is really simple though!

Josh, in a trim video sometime, could you explain more about the trim for power vs trim for glide? How does the “cruise” phase fit in to that. I’d like to see my model continue circling so it does disappear in the distance. Thanks, and I’ve learnt a lot already from your channel.
@joshuawfinn2 жыл бұрын
Well basically cruise trim on rubber models can be adjusted using stab tilt. There are a couple of nice articles on this in the Technical Library at freeflight.org, but the bottom line is that we trim most of the power phase with thrustline offsets and the cruise and glide with warps, incidence, and stab tilt.

I wish that scale model kits were available that had every strip of wood laser cut. Those uprights and cross braces can be a pain to get accurate in length.

Joshuaw, I certainly agree with adding right rudder at that point in the trimming process. Both power and glide needed more right turn. I'm wondering why in the ensuing flights you didn't tilt the stabilizer for more turn in the glide. It's hard to tell in the video, but it looks like a lifting stab. I love your channel, it's nice to see some others doing free flight rubber. This looks like a P-30 with a lot of potential, those were some beautiful flights you put up...
@joshuawfinn3 жыл бұрын
It could definitely use some stab tilt because it's wandering a bit in glide. I haven't changed it yet because it flew so well for Caleb at the Denver contest. Will probably tweak it a little before the Nats next year.

hey Josh thanks for all the great videos, curious if you made that winder? looks make some 3d printed parts in there... Just curious.
@joshuawfinn Жыл бұрын
That winder is a one-off built from a planetary gearbox with machined outputs and a printed grip. It works great but was a major job to complete.
@nuxboxen Жыл бұрын
@@joshuawfinn just curious what you salvaged the planetary gearbox from.

You started with 4 strands of 1/8th will you go up to 6?
@jeffsligh98183 жыл бұрын
For the P-30 class, you are limited to 10 grams of rubber, and for this model to use the rear motor peg, 4 strands is about all you are going to get and stay legal
@joshuawfinn3 жыл бұрын
I know several people who fly it on 6 strands but it doesn't need it, and 4 strands gives you a long cruise. Caleb flew it in Denver against a crowd of folks flying on 6 strands and absolutely smoked them.

Looks like a great P30 design. What winder are you using? Looks like a nice piece of kit.

That winder was custom made for Hope by one of our contractors. It's awesome but he'll never make another one like it.

Dear sir, Can I design my own airfoil or do I have to refer to the world standard aeromodelling airfoil table? 😊🙏
@joshuawfinn Жыл бұрын
Use a proven airfoil first. Once you have that as a baseline, make adjustments based on how the plane performs for you.
@johnmajane37313 жыл бұрын
You need a bigger yard!

Yup! But it's my field and I love it. I gave this plane to Caleb and he flew it when we went to Denver. He won big with it.
@Glicksman12 жыл бұрын
Josh, when we fly free flight, are we really "flying" the airplane or just launching it? :D Oh, and BTW, I'm a big fan of transparent orange wings for sailplanes. I put broad black stripes on the undersurfaces for better orientation on the R/C assisted ones. The "fun and challenge" of trimming (and hiking, climbing) aside, the wild wind being what it is, I think all of them could well-use a rudder servo. I like participation better than observation.
