How to determine if points are a rhombus, square or rectangle

👉 Learn how to determine the figure given four points. A quadrilateral is a polygon with four sides. Some of the types of quadrilaterals are: parallelogram, square, rectangle, rhombus, kite, trapezoid, etc. Each of the types of quadrilateral has its properties.
Given four points that represent the vertices of a quadrilateral, we can determine the figure by using our knowledge of the properties of quadrilaterals. Some of the things that we look out for are: parallel sides, equal sides, perpendicular sides/diagonals, etc.

I disagree with teaching this skill in this way. It's misleading because a quadrilateral can have diagonals of equal length without being a square or rectangle. Some kites have this property, for instance. Also, a quadrilateral can have perpendicular diagonals without being a square or rhombus. It's easy to prove all kites have this property. These two criterion only work because we know the points make a square, rectangle, or rhombus. It's not mathematically interesting, and I can't see its application, although admittedly, I haven't given it much thought.
