To anyone that needs help with the calculations I have done this many times myself the they way you do it is you take a measuring tape and measure the circumference of the tree trunk about chest hight then you take the circumference and divide it by 3.141592 (pi) this gives you the diameter. Then you’ll have to find out what species it is when you do, then you’ll have to look up the growth factor for that species then your going to multiply the growth factor times the diameter to get an estimated age . The real age could be plus or minus 10 years but this is the most accurate way without harming the tree hopes this helps someone.
@snail95522 жыл бұрын
My results are inaccurate because I’m dumb at math or the tree branches out after 17.12 inches or something like that
5 ай бұрын
@snail9552 I think it would be okay if you just do the measuring at the closest spot around chest height where there are no branches. Don't want to do matg with screwed up numbers. Your final answer will be even more screwed up.

When the system shown above was used to find the age of a tree in Virginia, (they actually knew the age), it ended up being more than twice the actual age of 85. So what is a more accurate way of finding out the age without cutting it down or taking a bore sample. Well Dr. Charles Byvik of Virginia stated that a more accurate formula is to use the Radius of the tree: (Circumference/(2 x 3.14) x growth factor. The tree used in Dr. Byvik demonstration was an Willow Oak which has a growth factor of 3, with an 180" in circumference. Using his formula shown above, the circumference is divided by 2 times PI which equals 6,28, so 180" divided by 6.28 x the growth factor of 3 equals an age of 85 years, which was the actual age of the tree. If the formula shown in the above video using the diameter instead of the radius, Dr. Byvik's tree would have been 172 yrs old. If Dr. Byvik formula is accurate then the tree measured in the above video is actually 76 years old.

About 10ft from the front door of my cabin stands a perfect post oak estimated to be 250 years old. If we both hugged it we could almost touch fingertips (bout 3-4 inch gap). The county sends an arborist out once a year to check on it. That guy says it's one of his favorite oaks. I said "me too". Lots of shade!

Every tree individual and species is different. I have a tree just a bit smaller than this in my backyard. I found pictures of it from back in the year 2002 ish. It was literall a baby little tree. (For clarity it is a pecan tree, which is related to hickory trees and is native to north america.) It looked like 4 inches in diameter. Now it is past two feet and seems like a massive tree. But it just must have had exceptional growth conditions. You have to take it case by case. Some of the oldest trees are not very big compared to others.

Thank you for this information we have a giant oak tree in our backyard massive it's right next to the house and it's about 130 ft tall it is very beautiful oak tree and mine is literally 150 inches round so now I'm gonna measure it my guess is 250 years ago and I'm going to use my tire stagger tape for racing for the measure it because it's meant to flex around round surfaces to measure the outside diameters of race car tires so it'll be more accurate than a regular tape measure

I think you need to divide the diameter by 2, or half it, then multiply by your growth factor. When you count rings on a felled tree, you start at the pith and count out to the bark. So your only counting rings of half the diameter....I think, lol!
@peheather6 жыл бұрын
Perhaps that has already been taken into account in the calculation of the growth factor - the reference provided clearly instructs one to use the diameter of the tree rather than the radius

I tried this with an american beech on my property and it says its 200 years old and several yellow poplars were over 100 years old, then I tried this on a bald cypress I planted in 2004 and it said it was old as the year 1989, so I guess it is give or take 15 years, and I suppose forest trees may be older since they dont get full sunshine

The simplest, easiest and most accurate method to determine the age of any tree? These books can give you a lifetime of information about trees and the essential role they play in the very existence of homo sapiens on this planet. Without trees we would not exist, it's that simple. “Trees of Power” By Akiva Siver “The Hidden Life of Trees, What They Feel, How They Communicate” By Peter Wohlleben ~ Peter has written 18 books about trees “Finding the Mother Tree, Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest” by Suzanne Simard “Tree Talk” by Dianne Robbins The seed of this magnificent ancient tree was lofted to this location on the winds of God. Landing in this location, successfully germinated and took root in the spring of 1635. All I did to find out how old the London Plane (Platanus X acerifolia), is in my yard that is nearly 12 feet in circumference ABH, I just asked her.

This is the funniest shit I've ever seen. Why wouldn't you use a loggers tape? DBH is measured strictly at 4.5 ft. so that the same measurement can be achieved by multiple people.NOT between 4.5/5ft. Obviously you've never done any real tree measurements and are assuredly NOT a certified timber cruiser. Just bore the tree and count the rings.
