My current college algebra teacher hasnt taught anything. Hes just thrown assignments at us and covered about 10% of the material AFTER throwing the assignments at us. Its been a complete nightmare. I've literally had to teach myself everything. This is so ridiculously simple, but without someone explaining it the way you did, it sounds way more complicated and overwhelming/terrifying. Thank you for making this so clear and concise. You are doing the world a favor providing these videos. Just wish other teachers cared as much about actually teaching material as you do

Most students don't know what an interval is but it's really just a slice of the graph. Just like bread is cut into slices, graphs are cut into intervals--the slices are like intervals. We could slice the bread horizontally but we don't. We slice bread vertically. Similarly, we could slice functions horizontally but we've chosen to cut them vertically. We use the x-values to tell us the thickness of each slice.

You don't use brackets for x-values in the middle of the graph. At those points, the graph is changing - neither increasing nor decreasing. The only time you use brackets for intervals of increasing, decreasing, or constant is when you have a closed point at the end of the graph. Otherwise, it's a good explanation.
@kevinwu556 Жыл бұрын
lol thank you im taking a practice test rn and i thought this was what we do but this dude almost had me fooled
@LHHELPS Жыл бұрын
No, you do use it. For dy/dx you get the values of increasing and decreasing, and the Critical Values are always in brackets if they exist on the F function. So you're wrong.

Hello! Just a question, at the the point (-4, 5) wouldn't the graph be constant so shouldn't the increasing interval be (-inifnity, -4) (with no square bracket)?
@craiglevig48212 жыл бұрын
Of course...he needs to revisit slope =0
@LHHELPS Жыл бұрын
@@craiglevig4821 No, you're wrong. Since -4,-5 is a Critical Value, which is when dy/dx = 0, then if the point exists on the f function, and it does, then it IS included in brackets.

This is great for understanding. But if anyone knows the answer, I would love an explanation for why you don’t write down the y value.
@riskybusiness2660 Жыл бұрын
Might be late but from what I can gather. In my work it's asking for the intervals that y [or of f(x)] is increasing decreasing or constant. So it's asking from what x value to what x value is the function f (or y) changing. Or something along those lines I think

For the first interval negative infinity through -4, the graph is not increasing or decreasing at -4, this would require parentheses instead of a square bracket. This would also apply to the remainder of the intervals.
