[UPDATE: I recently used spring-loaded lancets for this lab. They worked great. Here's a video showing my experience with them: • How to Use a Spring-Lo... This is great to show kids to take away the fear of using this unknown object. :) ]
I made this video to show my students my experience with the EldonCard. After I did this experiment with around 75 students, I have some tips that I don't show in this video.
1) If a person is helping you (which I highly recommend) have that person wear gloves.
2) When disinfecting with the alcohol swab, use an outward circular motion (instead of sweeping microorganisms back onto your finger)
3) Use a pipette to get the one drop of water. (Don't use the bottle that Carolina provides)
4) Be properly hydrated before pricking your finger (this allows your blood to flow faster after being pricked)
5) Have everything ready and to do the steps in the correct order instead of by doing by memory (this caused the students' wounds to clot before getting out the blood)
6) The person that is pricked should squeeze out his blood on the EldonStick. The person helping should hold the EldonStick for them while they do this
7) Prick the finger towards the side of the finger, rather than the center. I think this might cause less pain since less nerves are located there.
8) To help get blood out quickly, after being pricked, make sure you are standing up. Place your arm with elbow upwards and hand pointed at the ground (like an upside down "L"). Then with your other hand, make a very tight fist on the pricked finger and squeeze tightly downwards, like you are trying to milk a cow.
9) TILT THE CARD IN THE CORRECT ORDER. The one thing that really messed up some of my students' results is that they didn't tilt upside down first and then right side up. If tilted incorrectly, the water in one field can spill into another field, causing the antibodies from both fields to mix and the results to be inaccurate.
10) Protect your results using clear packing tape if your card doesn't come with "fixation foil"
11) If someone faints at the sight of blood (I had a student faint while watching the instructional video) be sure to allow that person to lay on the ground until they recover. Picking up their legs also helps restore blood flow back to the brain .
12) Using lancets from a glucose meter doesn't work because the prick is way too small to get a decent amount of blood out. Use the lancet that comes with your kit.
If you want a single EldonCard, I found this link on Amazon for a card that costs $11.95
www.amazon.com/Blood-Type-Kit-...
If you're interested, this is the EldonCard kit that I bought from Carolina if you need a class kit of 25.
www.carolina.com/product/abo+r...
I don't recommend this kit for a few reasons.
1) The bottles they give (in place of the micropipette) are useless. Not to mention, they give 4 of these bottles for a class of 25 students which makes no sense to me.
2) They provided a DVD for both of the kits I had ordered, which just seemed wasteful. I thought this should be sold separately, since I now have 2 identical DVDs
3) The DVD shows items provided with this kit that aren't provided by Carolina, like a protective cover for your results, a cotton ball, and most importantly, the pipettes!
(I'd rather order a kit that comes with the protective cover, a.k.a. fixation foil, for each card; however, I've provided packing tape for my students to tape up their cards which works just as fine I believe.)

Hey guys, a tip for more clear results; When "tilting" the testing paper, just slightly tilt and do not allow the mixture to run off of the test paper. After only slightly tilting in all directions, allow the mixture to dry. This will give a more clear result for reading and I suspect your positive RH factor result would be more evident. Good video, I used it to show my class! Thanks!! :)

I'm so glad that I found this video because my blood type kit is due in the mail any day now, and I have no idea how to do it. haha My Biology professor said that we can't do this in class because it would get too messy and we cannot have people's blood all over the lab stations. Fortunately I'm doing it at home and sharing my results for fun.

When it's dry, compare the Control to the D circle-- if they look similar (no clotting) then you're definitely be A-. it's possible for you to be A- with an A- parent and A+ parent. Your A+ parent could also be a carrier for Rh- factor (as Rh+ is a dominant). On a side note, being Rh- means that if you do have a child, you have to be wary of Rh disease, in which if your baby is Rh+, your body seeing the Rh+ fetal blood as foreign, will attack the baby.
@sadella
@sadella 6 жыл бұрын
Xolette there is no contact between the baby's blood and the mother's in a normal pregnancy. In some pregnancies, some conditions like extra uterine pregnancy can lead to the baby's blood entering the mother's system. Then the rejection would happen. But in normal pregnancies there is no issue having a baby with a different rh.

Btw, what I meant by "identify as foreign" is that when your body recognizes something doesn't belong, be it virus, bacteria, and in this case, someone else's blood, your body will go into attack mode in which antibodies will attach to the foreign blood cells which results in massive clumping of the blood cells, which in turn, can lead to death due do blood not getting to where it needs to get to.

When you disinfect with alcohol swabs you should rub in circles around the area, not wipe straight across. Wiping straight across can reintroduce organisms back into the area.

Being "negative" means you also don't have another marker on your blood cells, which is called the "Rh antigen" or "Rh factor". This means that your blood can be accepted by both positive and negative people, whereas, someone with O+ blood can only donate to only positive people (like A+, B+, AB+, and of course O+). Definitely donate your blood as it most likely would save a life!

I just got this blood typing kit today because I've been very curious. One of my parents is A- and the other is A+. I did my test, and it very clearly showed up as A-. The A circle was very obviously clotting, and the others just looked like red liquid. But after two or three minutes, I moved the card while the circles were still wet, and the D circle sample separating. Like, the liquid started running away from itself. What does that mean? It certainly wasn't clots.
@Maevelikeschampagne
@Maevelikeschampagne 4 жыл бұрын
Lindsey Marie wow, the exact same thing just happened to me. I think the D antigen takes longer to clot, but I am uncertain as to negative or positve because I am unsure if the blood for antigen-D would have done that to a degree anyway?

It is not impossible for you to be O- with you having 2 O+ parents; however, it'd be impossible if your parents were both O- and you came out O+. If you understood genotypes, it'd make more sense. For example, you are Rh-. That means you have 2 Rh- alleles ( - - ). One of those alleles (form of a trait) came from mom, the other from dad. In order to be Rh+, you can either be + + or + - . The Rh + alleles is dominant over the Rh - allele; in essence it masks over the Rh - trait.,

Universal Blood Donor who can donate to all blood types, yet can only receive blood from one blood type, O-, which btw, consists of 6% of the American population, whereas O+ is the most common at 37%. (A+ is 2nd most common at 34%) This blood type is used in emergencies since the person needn't be blood typed beforehand. Why O- blood doesn't agglutinate (clump) with other bloodtypes is because O blood doesn't have any surface markers (antigens) that identify it as foreign in other people.

Doctors nowadays keep in mind the blood type of both mom and dad, so this doesn't happen. And if it does, there is medicine to suppress the mother's immune system from attacking the child. And yes, for your Dad to be Rh- and mom to be Rh+, you had a 50% chance of being either Rh- or Rh+.
