Yeears ago when I was a young child I always used to reference until a few online friends told me thats not how you learn. So I stopped and quickly grew out of love with drawing because suddenly it felt like I kept getting worse and worse. Now being much older, I really wish I didnt listen to anyone, because I was slowly approaching the part where I could draw some characters I liked, albeit simple ones, in school. Where I’d have no ipad to look up and use as references. So I *was* learning. Just didn’t realise it yet. Now I’m horrible at drawing and have to start from the basics all over again 😅

Thats how I developed my art style lol when I was younger I would trace from my favorite artists and it really helped develop my style and took the intimidation out of drawing

This video is a great little example of using the art research process for a particular goal. Calling art research 'stealing' was initially a funny joke to get attention but it seems to have confused a whole generation of creative people. You ARE allowed to call looking at other art and learning from it "research", you're allowed to take that effort seriously! and describe it seriously for yourself too! Synthesizing something new from a bunch of ideas or sources is a big part of the creative process for any field. Scientists build on and test ideas from the past to expand knowledge. Designers build on those known ideas to solve new problems. Artists get to learn and build on anything and everything to say something new or true to their unique perspective. It's core part of being a creative creature, so have fun with it! For sources - Don't forget to look at galleries and museums and out in the world too (a lot of places are online, but the real thing is different again) - the bigger your pool of references, for what has and what hasn't been done, the more inspiration you will find!

For the question of were someone gets their ideas.. "Ideas are inevitable." - Marco Bucci Attributing the nonexistent Picasso quote about stealing like an artist sounds much more like another element of internalized hatred against artists. Tip for google searching, when doing a google search you can exclude some things from the result to get less AI images, like "dog -ai -prompt" but excluding commercial results also helps like "-etsy -poster -print"

Please properly credit the artists whose work is displayed in the video. Especially since many drawings are used in the thumbnail. "art isn't made by me" is not a useful form of properly crediting an Illustrator.

I would recommend for artist to use ai to study lighting color and form. I use it ALOT and the quality of my work has gone through the roof. I understand color and lighting better and I create my references images using midjourney. (Using Ai art references is no substitute for studying lighting and anatomy in a more traditional way based off of things seen in natural life. )Then blend all the parts I like to bring my idea for a piece to life. Midjorney never creates the image I imagine in my head but it gives me a starting point. If anyone would like an example of what I’m talking about feel free to reply and I’ll explain further what I mean.

I think it’s terrible to use AI art regardless even for reference when you could go online and look at art made by humans that have nuance to it. Why use AI art when you can just find the original artists these sites steal from and ref off their work instead? 🤔 I dunno. Whatever works for you but I feel like most artists would benefit a lot more from reffing from one another rather than an AI algorithm (that’s bound to be wonky.)

@@thelingeringartist I’m a digital artist who has been doing art digitally for almost 10 years and I can say ai has really helped me, and improved my work in a short period of time . And I reference actual artist work all the time, I’m just not sure how that supports your point. I just think we as artists get so caught up in the fact that ai uses real artist work that we are blind to thinking of the potentially beneficial uses for it. A specific artist work will never pop up unless you add their name to the prompt . I think if you implement the tool (because that’s all it is,and ai art will NEVER replace real artist) you will find that there is a lot to be learned about art and where it’s headed in this digital age. If you don’t find a way to use the system to your benefit you will eventually be left behind. I hate ai art, but why would I scour the internet for hours looking for a reference that kinda matches the idea I have, when I could just type exactly what I want and get better results and even come up with new ideas entirely. I think if people put down the pitchforks they would be able to see how ai could actually be a useful tools in specific situations. Also when you reference an artist work you use it for maybe the color pallet or the pose or form of the subject(mostly) unless you’re doing a study. So I really don’t get how using an artist work really benefits that artist. A lot of artist actually don’t want their art referenced, I don’t agree with that point , but those artist exist. People were riled up in the same way when photoshop popes up on the market. It’s just demonizing something we don’t fully have a grasp on and to me that’s an ignorant position to put yourself in. But that’s just my opinion, I will continue to use ai to improve my art. And continue to learn, and streamline my process, while actually retaining the info I just learned , to be used for my future works. Good luck on your art journey, I will never stop supporting artist, and that includes when I’m trying to encourage them to be open minded ☺️.

Idk. I still think original art is better. Which is why i usually try and reverse search ai art because i find it's more helpful seeing the specific techniques of that artist and getting to see more of their work then ai art. I feel the same for art that is heavily referencing another. I often find myself looking for the original source, especially if that heavily referenced piece looks good. Because clearly rhe original artist does something that makes their art look so good that just referencing helps you so i like to track down the original source so i can attain it for myself.
