How to Deworm Horses + Signs a Horse Has Worms

Very informative video...i am surely going to try DE with my mares..one organic ancient practice we do for horse deworming in india is we pour 150 Grams of unprocessed raw lime stones into 2 liter water kept in clay pot ..we let it boil..and we mix it 2 times for three days with plastic or wooden stick..after three days all the dirt in limestone comes on the top of water..just remove it and you are left with crystal clear water and limestone will be sitting at the bottom..you have to take 50 ml of that clear water and feed it to your horse in the morning with syringe..or you could feed jaggary 15 min before giving limestone water..that would work better..you have to do it continuously till 15 days..and can repeat after every 1-2 months ..this process gives horse planty of calcium and other minerals as well as it also kills all the worms..i have tried it and got very good result..just make sure not to let it touch with any metal..

Do you ever have your fecal samples tested at the vet for effectiveness

Hi Jamie, Thanks for your comment! We don't do fecal egg tests but there definitely are people using DE that have and the results came back clear! The problem with fecal egg tests is that they're only 20-25% accurate and don't show all parasites so it's not a great gauge of where a horse is at with parasites. So we go off of our horses' appearance and overall health (super shiny coats, not ribby and potbellied, energetic, etc.) because if they had parasite burdens they wouldn't be healthy on the outside either. It's also totally okay for a horse to have a low amount of parasites, it's not realistic for them not to because they are always coming in contact with parasites. Love the idea of using DE but our horses are out on pasture and we don’t feed a supplement every day 🤔 I guess I need to feed them something every day for this to work or any other ideas on how to use DE?

Hi there! Thanks for the comment! Yes, you will need to use some soaked hay pellets for feeding the DE. That's what we do and it works great as you want the DE to be wet down because of how powdery it is. You wouldn't need to feed very much of the hay pellets. 😊

Just bought a horse and he's overweight. He's supposed to be on grass only. Is there anything else I can mix this with?

The soaked alfalfa pellets shouldn't be a problem as it is low in starch and sugar and is a forage. 😊 You could feed just enough alfalfa to supplement the DE with. Hope that helps! ☺ -Rachel

Is there a certain brand of DE that you recommend or would advise of staying away from? New to DE and just want to make sure I try and get the best.

Hi Jeremy, We use the brand PERMA-GUARD, which our local farm store carries, but there are other good brands. The key is that it's FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth and you also want it to be white/off-white in color for the most benefits as that is the purest DE.
