My skil 77 has the metal handle. Circa 1971, and works great to this day. It’s a gem and not the type of saw you mishandle and abuse. Thanks for the info. It was helpful.

I bought my skil 77 in 1971, 53 years ago. Great saw for structural framing and deck building as well. Only parts I’ve replaced are the cord, brushes, and foot after one of my carpenters dropped it from a roof we were framing. Thanks for the instructional demonstration as I had a problem with excessive sparking. Thought I needed an armature but cleaned the parts up and installed new brushes. Also when it was disassembled washer springs fell out, but followed your video which was very helpful. Thanks

this was the best video I've seen that breaks down the main parts of this saw: the electrical components! thank you for this video. I just bought a saw like this one and one thing I noticed was that there was a lot of build up of saw dust and oil and goo all around it. Cleaned it up and noticed it had next to no oil in it. Refilled but I do see some sparking. Not as much as yours did, but I may need to replace the armature later. I hope the worm drive is still in good shape.

Super professional, clear, quick video. Bought a mag77 in a garage sale for $20, barely works, and think I might fix it now. But I'll probably buy a Makita hypoid on eBay just to be equipped.

It was both helpful and interesting. And I know exactly how you feel about your saw, they become a part of your project personality. We have an old all metal porter-cable saw and wouldn't want to be without it. But it isn't a worm drive, the direct drive style. Why do you like the worm drive type? I have never gotten accustomed to the torque or the twist when they start. But there must be a reason you like it. Just wanted to understand why the worm drives are so popular. Hope you are having a good weekend ... we have rain forecasted for the whole rest of the weekend, and into Monday. As usual thank you for the effort in making these interesting videos, and they are useful too.
@SoatMon
@SoatMon 5 жыл бұрын
I used to have the direct drive style but bought this saw do to the recommendation of an old time carpenter over 30 years ago. I find it much easier to cut a straight line especially if you are cutting 2x4, 2x6s etc free hand on the go resting across your thigh. Cutting rafter ends once in place to even them up you just let the weight of the saw do the work.I don't know if the center of gravity is different, handle placement, or what but to me it makes for much straighter cuts. Hope your weekend is good, we have flood warnings this evening but no rain so far.

I have a Porter-Cable 168A that has been in the family since the non-swinging 60s. You might be interested to know that Porter-Cable also made worm drive saws. The real Porter-Cable tools from Syracuse were fantastic as were these Skil worm drives from Chicago. I will start weeping on my keyboard if I think too long about the tragic fate which has befallen both companies since their glory days. Too late I'm already weeping........

I have the exact saw. Love the blade on the left side since I am right handed and can see the blade and pencil line easily. The only thing about the blade on the left I don't like is the fact that I have to reach over the saw with my left hand when cutting off something that needs to be held and have the bulk of the saw base on the larger part of the board. Hard to explain.

Some where along the line, the armature design has changed. I have an old all metal HD77 type 13. The field and windings are smaller and the worm drive on the shaft has moved. What exactly is a type 13 vs any other type? Which types are backwardly comparable? Does an armature from a type 15 fit in a type 13? All of the HD77 history sites don't mention " types"

Just bought a new mag77 and its doing this😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨. Should i exchange it or fix it? Alot of people were in the same boat as me only to get a saw in similar condition. Domt wanna drive back to the store, deal with that, drive back home and have the same issue😂. Also is it normal to an extent? All the wormdrives ive ever used were old and did this all the time. Your video just made me worried lol

Hi. Great video !. I have a Makita circular saw, and, because when simply picking it up off the bench it's all too easy to accidentally pull the trigger, I'd like to make a safety pin to lock the trigger when not in use. I'm wondering if the trigger is completely hollow and there'd be no problem drilling a small hole to insert a pin at its rear end where it enters the handle casing? Or is there something inside the trigger, e.g a spring or wires(s) that could be damaged by drilling the hole? Perhaps there are better ideas on how to make a simple trigger lock ?
