I have free roam indoor rabbits. Like clockwork we get mites in spring and during fall shedding. I use Advantage for kittens or small cat 5-9 lbs. Toss their toys. Clean their potty box etc with vinegar. Vacuum everyday thoroughly for about a week- be sure to edge well, they hide like fleas. That's all I've ever done. It's easy and they are gone like magic. This also worked with my first infestation which was horrendous before I figured it out- clumps of hair, bald spots, the mites were even on me. I used the above method and - gone. It also works for fleas. FYI. Rubbing alcohol kills fleas and mites on contact (and lice). Great for carpets, furniture, etc. Not directly on the pet though.

I was interested in Bio-Groom until I read this on another site: "The use of over the counter products against mite or ear mites should be avoided. Most contain pyrethrin. While one of the least toxic insecticides for animals and rabbits, pyrethrins/pyrethroids are neurotoxins which lead to continuous "firing" of nerves. Observed problems in rabbits include limb paralysis, seizure, coma, tremor, sometimes death. Many of those products contain additives that prolong the effect of the pyrethrins, and inhibit the breakdown of these products in the body. They can lead to toxic reactions in rabbits. Piperonyl butoxide is one of them. If no immediate death, there should be **slow** recovery with time, around 48 h." What are your thoughts?

Walking dandruff is the question, my buck is about 10 pounds, I want to topically apply 1 drop ,undiluted, at the base of the neck, thoughts?
@SpragueRiverHomestead7 ай бұрын
Well, so far you've undosed him to the point it's ineffective, especially since you diluted it. A 10# buck should be treated at .01 per pound, so .1cc/ml. NEVER dilute medication. Putting water (unless distilled) in the ear canal is asking for infection. Since you've pretty much given him nothing so far, administer the correct dosage split between the 2 ears. You don't need to give it topically on his nape. Once it's in the blood stream it'll take care of the fur mites. If you really feel the need to, put a drop or two of his dose on the nape and the rest into his ears.

Hi I hope you see this comment as I know this video is a few years ago. I have 2 rabbits I rescued outside and they have a severe case of fur mites. They also gave it to my cat. I took them to the vet and she gave Revolution. But after a couple of weeks of having that on, the mites seemed to be getting worse. So out of desperation I used a topical ivermectin used for cattle. It seemed to help a bit but I still see them itchy and scratchy. It’s driving me crazy because they both had GI Stasis and one bun is still battling stasis a month later. Not sure if I’m using the proper ivermectin but I can’t afford a vet anymore. When should I see them stop itching and would I need to reapply? And how often? Thank you

Cattle ivermectrin is fine to use. Topical rate is 0.018cc per pound, so make sure you are dosing correctly. Treat once, then follow up at 7 days, then another 7 if the infestation is severe. They should stop itching in a few days.

Hello! I'm new to rabbits and got 2 NZ's from my daughters FFA teacher for my daughter to start showing. We didn't know that hay can carry mites. We temporarily placed the cages on straw until hubby got the hutch built. 3 days after getting them I notice that she had a balding patch starting behind her ears on the neck. day 4 much worse. I was told to treat with kitten flea powder and a pea size ivermectin paste orally which was no easy task, but we did it. I did this and she became sick, maybe too much paste. She didn't eat for 24 hours and very lethargic. We thought we were going to lose her. She started eating on day 3 with timothy hay and on day 4 started eating her pellets again. She is now back to her normal greeting us at the cage door and wanting a nose rub. It has been a week since I did the paste and a light dusting of flea powder. I really don't want to do the flea powder again and was wondering if I could treat the fur mites with the injectable Ivermec topically on her neck (or would you recommend drops in the ears) on day 10 from initial paste treatment? I want to make sure that the fur mites are all gone. Prior to treating we only noticed missing hair, today day 7 after initial paste given I now see the dandruff that everyone talks about. I want to make sure that I clear this all up before we breed for meat rabbits and for the comfort of the rabbits. I haven't notice anything on the other doe we got, but I still treated her just in case.
@SpragueRiverHomestead3 жыл бұрын
That is absolutely the danger of powders and paste. Don't use either on rabbits. The paste can overdose and kill them really easily. I use injectible ivermectrin (never the plus, just the basic) applied topically, either in the ears or at the nape of the neck. Dosage rate is .01cc per lb, so about 0.1cc for a 10# rabbit. Make sure you dose it correctly, as too much can kill and too little will help breed resistant mites. Absolutely treat both rabbits as mites will migrate. Hope that helps. Good luck!

NOOOOOO to paste!!! Paste wormers are intended for large animals that will use the entire tube. It is not 100% blended and does separate in storage. This means that there is no way to safely or correctly dose. Contrary to some bad info out there, it IS possible to overdose rabbits. If you need to administer, use the injectible ivermectrin (regular, not gold or plus) and give either orally or topically. Unless they have worms or mites they don't need treatment. Ever. All "preventative" treatment does is create more resistant parasites. No withdrawal times have ever been established in rabbits using ivermectrin as it is "off label" usage. In most species its 30 says, but to be safest, don't use any meds unless completely necessary.

Fendbendazole is another option and can be given orally, however it is not as effective for external parasites. Repeat in 10-14 days. 2. Severe nutritional/vitamin imbalance. Usually rabbits would die of this before becoming thin or experiencing hair loss, but it does depend on the vitamin. What are they eating now? I'd definitely start with treating for parasites. If you can treat them and you see no improvement in a month it's something else. That's all the help I can probably provide from here. Good luck!

What about kits? I have week old kits that I suspect to have mites. Their ears aren't "open" yet. But they have the tell tell 'dry skin' look. I lost one kit last night. Possibly from mites, possibly something else, and I physically saw mites crawling on it. (I was shocked). I checked the does and they looked clean. But I treat regularly, especially during winter (they live in the barn due to low temps here), to make sure I don't have a bloom. Currently moving them to their summer location where they will not be so surrounded by wood. Also, I'm concerned that may its the flake & hay that is infested. So how to i know?
@SpragueRiverHomestead4 жыл бұрын
I have never seen or heard of a case of mites in rabbits under 6 weeks old. If the mites aren't attached to the kits themselves and mom is clean, I would dump, sanitize and refresh the nest box. It could be the hay. When in doubt, throw it out.

So the topical solition of Ivermectin won't work for my rabbit?
@SpragueRiverHomestead3 жыл бұрын
It should. The over use of wormers is breeding parasite resistance in all species, so I don't recommend using it for ear mites. Remember that you need to retreat after 10 days. Ivermectin has to be dosed correctly or can make rabbits sick (or worse). Typically it's 0.01cc per pound applied topically.

Crust develops on the "floppy parts" only in advanced cases. I keep a pretty close eye on my rabbits, so very seldom do I get ear mites that spread out of the ear base.

Hi! It’s me again! I got ivomec and first gave it to my Holland lop about 3 weeks ago. When we first purchased him, he didn’t have any fur on his tail. Then a few weeks later I noticed the fur around his front and back paws started to gradually recede towards his legs. After giving him ivomec, his tail grew back which is great!!! But I have not seen any improvement in his paw areas. I don’t see any ear mites, so i suspected fur mites... but assumed if his tail grew back the fur around his paws would too. But so far they haven’t, Any thoughts?

I would guess it's either fungal or he's chewing his fur off. 🤔 If it's fungal you can use athlete's foot cream. If it's him chewing, try upping his fiber and giving him more toys. Could be some sort of stress response?

There is another question: Do rabbit scabies cause infection in humans?
@SpragueRiverHomestead10 ай бұрын
I've never seen or heard of a rabbit getting scabies, as scabies are a pretty specific type of burrowing mite that doesn't generally live in thick fur or hair. Ear mites and fur mites are generally pretty species specific. I have heard that cats can pick up fur mites from rabbits, but have never had that issue first-hand.

what kind of routine health things do you do for your rabbits? Do you vaccinate them yourself? I am learning about rabbits and would like to start raising meat, but I am in Colorado and just found out about RHDV2. Can you speak about that? I guess I should wait to start looking for rabbits.
@SpragueRiverHomestead4 жыл бұрын
I'm working on a video for RHD/RHDV2. It's a pretty big subject, so it'll be a couple of weeks before it's ready. We don't vaccinate our rabbits, and won't be vaccinating for RHD. Rabbits are highly prone to skin infections at injection sites, so unless they absolutely needs something (like penicillin) we don't give injections. We've talked a bit about routine care in some other videos, but we'll have a very specific one out in about a week and a half, so keep watching. The big things we do multiple times per year (at least quarterly) are nails, weights, checking for mites (both fur/ear), checking genitals and checking teeth. I also like to take a good peek at their eyes.

Sounds like intestinal coccidiosis. I would suggest Googling the different treatment options to see what medications might be available in your area. Regardless of how you decide to treat, you'll need to do a very thorough sanitation of the cage, nesting box they used, feeders and waterers. Also, the entire herd will need treated, not just those affected, as it's not uncommon for some to by asymptomatic but still carriers. Good luck, and sorry to hear you are dealing with this.
