Frequently Asked Questions
Does a heat pump really run backwards in the winter?
How Heat Pumps work
No, this is one of the wildest of all tales that never seems to die. A heat pump actually runs the same way all the time, never in reverse or backwards. It collects heat from the outside air and transfers it indoors, where a fan unit can blow it through your home. Similarly, it removes heat from your home in the summer and transfers the heat outside. You can experience this by placing your hand over the condensing unit outside in the summer. You will feel extra hot air blowing onto your palm.
Is it cheaper to run a heat pump or a gas furnace?
A clear-cut answer has not been reached upon yet. The truth is that a heat pump is less expensive in the winter at temperatures above 40° Fahrenheit. Correspondingly, a gas furnace (propane or natural) is the least expensive at temperatures below 40° Fahrenheit.
Is there a way to get the best of both a heat pump and gas furnace?
Dual Fuel Heating
Yes, you could invest in the dual fuel system. We can provide you this system that is becoming very popular. Using a dual fuel HVAC system in the house can give you the best of both worlds. The heat pump works at temperatures above 40° Fahrenheit and the gas furnace works at temperatures below 40° Fahrenheit. As there are no “heat strips” or electrical resistance heating coils on the dual fuel system, the gas furnace acts as the back-up or secondary heating system for the heat pump instead of the “heat strips.”
Is there any difference in the summer between the use of a heat pump and a straight A/C unit?
No, as long as the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating is the same for both. Air conditioning condensing units are placed outside on a pad and are connected to an evaporator at the end of a gas furnace by means of Freon lines. Condensing units and evaporators have to be “matched” by the manufacturer to achieve the desired SEER rating.

your condensor runs on cooling but you still check for high and low voltage at the air handler. if your ahu has no high or low voltage the condenser wont run unless the contactor is pitted

It would be a big help if they put insulation on the power wire connectors to the transformer. Slide your arm against that 240 a couple times and find all the burs on the sheet metal. Then get confused following wires to the sequencer etc. Ive had my fun.

Expert Express plumbing heating and air conditioning I think it's always good common sense unless you have to take voltage and amp measurements to always turn the power of the appliance before work even if that person is an repair tech or known a lot about electricity, if taking voltage and amp measurements is necessary i always what to make sure only the meter is touching the live components inside of the appliance

great video. I have a GM 80%. What causes my fan relay switch to repeatedly open and closes when it's trying to run the indoor fan. This will only happen when the fan goes on the first 1min. And then the fan will not get any amp for about half a minute and then it will run smoothly thereafter. I replaced the board twice already and the symptom is still there. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Not sure if there's a part II to this... The video just ended with you saying "will show you in a second"???.... Good video nevertheless ...In future videos, You can audibly tell us the voltage reading, you don't need to show the meter in that tight space. Also, Would have loved to see a resistance test on the stuck relay..

that is high voltage coming in from utility power, 249 volt phase to phase will stress any electrical component, assuming the fieldpiece meter is accurate, id go to the electrical panel and check each phase coming in and confirm, then advise the homeowner to call their power company, also check phase to ground for high voltage

Ben Staton Your funny, call the electric company to turn off the transmformer? So what if it is high voltage? You already have 240v what's the point of checking the panel? Do you even understand the basic theory how electric circuit works?

does the fan run on high speed when in heat mode? If it has heat strips
@dominicparralez8074
@dominicparralez8074 7 жыл бұрын
The fan runs on mid,or slow speed, the hot air is lighter than the cold air, the cold air in the return air in the air handler unit pass through the coil,or the evaporator, then on the heat strips, the heat strips will stay on only when the outside unit is in defrost mode,if your unit is a heat pump unit, if your unit is a straight AC unit with an electric heat strip ,the thermostat will have the heat strips on all the time the thermostat is calling for heat , again the fan should run on low speed,or at on medium speed, the return air is heavier ,and colder passing through the heat strips, if the fan runs on high speed, the cold air in the return air will dissipates the heat from the heat strip, before it will supply heat to the room inside the house,and the thermostat will call for heat until the room temperature is satisfied by the thermostat set point , your electric bill will be higher,that's why the fan should run always on slow speed in heat mode.

What was the cfm your unit was producing overall, compared to the cfm required for the furnace output, taking into consideration how many heat strips you had running at any given time and the BTU's produced per strip?

Question? If I measure the transformer, it doesn't show 240V. But I measure one leg and the chassis, it shows 110V. Another leg and chassis, it shows 110V. But bot legs of transformer, they dont show 240V. What is the issue there?

Thanks for taking the time to make and upload the video. However, you are taking serious risk to put a meter probe in each hand. Under the wrong conditions, you could conduct voltage through your chest. Your heart will take a hit, and you are finished. I learned this from Purdue University. A lady here hired a plumber to fix her sump pump. He went into the basement, and never walked out. Firemen removed his body. Alternating Current is almost as dangerous as Thomas Edison claimed.
