Haha, it's been just over month ago since I requested this so I forgot about it (late night drinking when I did)... When I saw this, I was like, "Who has the good the taste?" and it turned out to be me (I had to check my email and apparently I have NIN and Portishead tracks coming down the pipe so that's pretty cool). Great reaction either way! The track definitely has that lonely spacey vibe (and a similar chord progression to Bowie's "Space Oddity" so it only makes sense). The live string section really takes it over the top, especially when it gets all dissonant at the end, resembling something by Penderecki.

Some context on this song: Thom Yorke wrote this song after he nearly had a breakdown following Radiohead's rapid ascent into stardom and success following the release of "OK Computer" in 1997 and the subsequent heavy touring the band embarked on to promote the album. The low point came after a disastrous performance at the Glastonbury festival where Thom Yorke wanted to end the concert midway through and walk off stage. Ultimately the band completed the set, but later described it as "a form of hell". A week before, they did, what was at that time, their biggest show yet. In Dublin, Ireland in front of around 38.000 people. That was the 7th show of the tour. The 1st show of the tour was in Lisbon, Portugal, and the band played in a small club and couldn't sell out the tickets even. In front of an audience of around 400 people. So in a couple of weeks they went from playing in front of 400 to playing in front of 38.000, and Thom Yorke had problems dealing with the pressure. The lyrics at the start of this song are: "That there, That's not me. I go, Where I please. I walk through walls, I float down the Liffey. I'm not here, This isn't happening." Liffey is the river that flows through the center of Dublin. Thom Yorke was also inspired by R.E.M. front-man Michael Stipe after Yorke contacted Stipe, and asked him for advise on how to deal with the stress he was experiencing. Stipe told Yorke to relieve the stress by repeating to himself: "I'm not here. This isn't happening." A quote from an interview with Yorke: "That song is about the whole period of time that OK Computer was happening. We did the Glastonbury Festival and this thing in Ireland. Something snapped in me. I just said, ‘That’s it. I can’t take it anymore.’ And more than a year later, we were still on the road. I hadn’t had time to address things. The lyrics came from something Michael Stipe said to me. I rang him and said, ‘I cannot cope with this.’ And he said, ‘Pull the shutters down and keep saying, ‘I’m not here, this is not happening."

I saw them live once in Vancouver maaaany years ago. Was in my early twenties. I was high on acid, my ex-girlfriend mushrooms. I'll always remember when this song played, my girl started leaning against me until she quite literally "fainted" and fell over. The look on her face after I pulled her back onto her feet was indescribable. Afterwards she told me that she'd never experiences such an "out of body experience" before in her life - the music took her somewhere she'd never been before. Needless to say, the concert was f*cking incredible. Right up there with the best Tool shows I've seen (seen them 6 times).

How to Disappear Completely floors me every time I hear it. I love how the Orchestra gets all twisted up towards the end, then the bass comes in and resolves it. It is like a being stuck in a storm at sea, then you see the lighthouse. The bass pulls you back to safety. Stunning. Radiohead have said that it is one of the songs that they are most proud of. All the best. Rich in Sweden.

Radiohead is one of those bands where their songs are so complex that it often takes many listens before you like it as much as you will. A lot of musicians just mess around until they play a groove they like, then make a song of it. Those type of songs sound best the first time you hear them but they have a short shelf-life. Radiohead are legit composers. They think through every sound of every layer of everything, and listen to their own songs as they're making them to optimize for the long-haul. That's why their stuff sounds even more captivating the 10th time than the 1st time.

This song brought tears to my eyes when they played it at my first Radiohead show. It's been there for me to provide catharsis when I'm at my lowest, and to remind me of what beauty can be when I'm not. I absolutely love your commentary where you say that it's not just a dark sadness in this song, especially with that resolution in the ending. I cannot possibly emphasize enough how much I love this song. And it's (probably) not even my favorite song of theirs.

You really react to the best music imo. One construction suggestion if I may? Perhaps, don't feel compelled to keep a list of the technical elements of a song, and just relay how the song made you 'feel' in your end commentary/analysis. I think that's probably what most of your audience want to know anyway. Either way, keep up the great work! :)
