The Ferrum Forge Mordax is an interesting knife, with a lot of free-spinning screws. Aside from trying to figure out the best approach to dealing with those whilst not being a brilliant man, the knife wasn't particularly hard to take down, and the end result is a big improvement in the knife's overall action.

I don't watch disassembly videos often because I don't own the knives, but when I do I remember how I love your channel. I love that it's done live, warts and all. I can't think of another youtuber doing that and I gotta give you gem status for that homie.

The screws they put on the production run are shorter than the custom screws they upgrade to. Worth the extra money. Much more quality

Finally! I get to see your opinion of the Mordax. I was the one that requested it the other day on Reddit. Looking forward to it Nick!

Made 4 years ago WOW thanks for the vid Nick~! mine is on the way and this is not a perfect knife but for an American made 20cv baby...mmmmmm yeah ok baby yeah okay hmmmmhmmmm plus it's a chunkier blade for a thin blade hahaha if that makes any sense. Not happy it's free spinning either but the rolling detent ball IS FRINKIN'FANTASTIC!!! It's my first knife with that, and well I'm just grateful you made this video thanks bud. I got to geek out for a little bit and I didn't even get all oily hahahaha till next time bud 👍👍

You can back off the grub screw on the HRD to lighten the detent to however you like it.

Yep, and that helps, but not quite enough to overcome the lockbar issue.

2:37: I'm really not a fan of those tiny bearings. It seems to me that the small diameter makes the pivot weak in side load. And to control the blade play you have to increase the pivot tension which will shorten the bearing life. They need to step up their engineering game.

idk if I just happen to be lucky but if I open the blade then unscrew the pivot it doesn't spin and I can unscrew it. I have 3 FFKW knives.

Does it matter what orientation you put the caged bearings in? As in, open side facing the blade or facing the handle?

Might be an Interesting point, my FFKW Septer is not free-spinning on any of the screws or the pivot. As far as I can tell, Ferrum tries out ideas and adds/removes features as they bring out new models. Their newest design is going to have all titanium hardware for example.

Sure, great that they try out ideas...but explain to me what possible advantage comes from a free-spinning pivot or screw...

DavidMN doesn't have to be one? Far as I know, in the range this knife is in it, it's just a design choice. Shoot the guys at FFKW an email? No interest in arguing. Just pointing out that they are constantly trying out features and generally improving as they go.

It's not a design choice, it's a lack of care while designing. There's no reason to have a free spinning screw, no aesthetic reason, no tactical or situational advantage, nothing. It's a weakness, not a strength. No arguing. Just your wording implies this was an "idea" as opposed to a lack of care.

All you have to do to keep the pivot from free spinning is to push the blade toward the scale and maintain some pressure while you tighten or loosen it ... it's not that hard

I like the blade/handle designs coming out of FF, but they are not building these knives with user-managed long term maintenance in mind. I emailed them about the locktight and free-spinning pivot (that can't be secured with a hex/torx wrench??) and their response was that they prefer that the buyer does not take their knives apart, since the flipping action is tuned by them, and they want to keep it that way. That's fine, maybe, but it is not a knife that I can buy because of that.

Michael Gris that's strange. They don't want the knives taken apart because of dialed in flipping action yet they use an adjustable detent ball....

My 15secs of fame....what to say........first. By any chance you can share with us the best tools to service our knives with? Like the oils you use or any tricks you picked up along the way, I know in one video you used bike chain oil, how is that working out so far?

Ferrum Forge is way overhyped. Good looking knives, they work okay...but for the price they're ridiculous.
@schbasdy

couldn't agree more. Tiny, flimsy hardware, free spinning screws do not induce much confidence in the knife and are simply a sign of poor design choices. Rudimentary finish... 500$+ for somthing uninspired like that? No way... Value for money looks every bit as poor as with Striders
