Aluminum has been strong enough for just about every aircraft and spacecraft flown in the last 100 years, I think its ok for a knife handle.
@MixBetterNowTV4 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking. Just about every Mil-Spec Firearm is made of 7075 or 6061 (what this guy is) and that speaks volumes. Granted, 7075-T6 is stronger than 6061 but it’s a POCKET KNIFE haha (not laughing at you, laughing at the knife bro haters). I’m not taking my Mordax to war. 6061 is stellar for an edc material. Right there w ya Rob 👊🏼😎

You rarely even see protechs with scratches on the ano, much less failure due to aluminum. People just rarely use knives of this type that hard anyway.

I did get mine apart, but I had to tape up a screwdriver to use as a pry-bar to get it the first time. From the pics, I wished I'd gotten the milled version. Now that I've seen you and another reviewer both not like the milling, I'm glad mine is "Bryan Spec" plain. Great review, as always!

When I was trying to disassemble mine, the screw under the clip threw me off, all the screws I see came out, but I didn't see the one under the handle and saw the milling for the clip screws so assumed it was just pressed together in a way that a pry tool wouldn't help. Then I kept messing with it and one slab came loose and the button and spring came out - and I realized I had to pull the clip. This is right up there with the Malibu IMO. Not the best value ever seen, but as a heavy duty Malibu I'm good with it costing more . Love the button lock flipper, looking forward to the Civivi button flipper with how nice the elementum button is (taking a little longer to break in but similar fidgetiness at a great price point)

To be fair... i love the feeling of frame/liner locks guillotine actions purely because of the level of smoothness the can arise with friction against the blade. But the fidget factor of button/compression lock just has its own likability.

Have to agree. Price point kind of kills this knife for me. Great ideas and nice knife but $200 is more palatable. Will probably wait until it hits the secondary market.

Good luck with that. Every massdrop knife I've seen on eBay is more expensive than from massdrop.
@roypatterson1415 жыл бұрын
Don’t buy on the secondary market. Massdrop will not service the knife for warranty issues unless you are the original owner. You also must have the original purchase order. Pretty ugly..

I’ll pick one up and the price seems fair to me. Obviously you can get titanium scales with a 20cv blade but not made in America and the boys at FFKW know what they are doing.
@botat346915 жыл бұрын
Although USA made will add to the cost the real reason for the price is to many hands in the cookie jar. Massdrop, protec and ferrum forge. They are all 3 getting a cut hence the price. If it were only 1 or 2 price would be cheaper.

My personal issue with aluminum comes down to customization. Its much easier to get aftermarket titanium anno mods than aluminum. But thats just my personal opinion
@thepracticalblade90133 жыл бұрын
Interesting on your disassembly experience. I actually had the same issue with my Malibu. I was watching your disassembly video side-by-side and just had no clue why mine wouldn't come apart with all the screws out. Still not quite sure what it was all about. But, yes, it required more force than I felt comfortable with using... even though I eventually did use said force. Still trying to understand this to this day.

@AverageDE5 жыл бұрын
I think the issue people have with the aluminum is the price and not that they think aluminum is sub par. I can understand the price due to being made by Protech, but they would likely sell thousands more if they started at $199. Would the extra sales make up for a lower profit on each blade? I have no clue.

I am not sure why so much fuss about the aluminum. It's damn strong material, bike and airplanes are made out it and its a light material. Also, how come you did not mention that the clip has only one possible position. For this price it should have been reversible to the other side as bare minimum.

3rd gen CPM so as super as steels get atm. (M390 and 154CM are the only other 3rd gen steels afaik). Serious pocket pecker though. G10 or CF scales would have been banging from an aesthetic pov and at the price point CF should be standard.

In the EUSSR most pro-techs are illegal. This one is a rare opportunity. I liked the plain boring one. I think aluminium is underused and many knives would be better if they knocked $30-50 off the price and used lighter aluminium rather than titanium. Especially if it's not a frame lock which I'm not even keen on anyway. So it scratches easier. Minor issue

Good design. Great action. Unfortunately, as others have commented ... pricey. For the money, I would go with Hinderer
@HikikomoriZone5 жыл бұрын
rhino ranch Hinderers are $400+, assuming you're getting one of his in-house production knives. Customs will land you in the territory of a grand and up. Only ZT made Hinderer designs are in the same price range as the Protech/MD/FFKW Mordax. I'm also just going to assume you aren't talking about budget stuff like Kershaw Hinderers...so where's the comparison to Hinderer products here?
@Clambelly5 жыл бұрын
@@HikikomoriZone Thanks for the reply. Correct me, if I am wrong, but it is my understanding that the Mordax is approx $425 "crowd funded" limited production which would put it in the same price as Hinderer in-house production? I bought a one-of-a-kind "Neos" from Allen Elishewitz in person at the NYC Knife Show years ago $425, that was before he was recognized, making watches or pens. I have an original Mike Franklin "Hog" custom handmade beautiful beast of a folder for less $$$. I cannot fathom spending that kind of money for a limited run crowd funded knife. Seriously, much rather spend money on RJ Martin, Chris Reeves Sebenza, Bob Dozier, Ed Martin fixed blade or any number of up and coming stars. IMO, I do not see the value in this knife at all.
@HikikomoriZone5 жыл бұрын
rhino ranch it is not $425. These are going for $240-260, depending on configuration. A custom/semi-custom in-house Mordax from Ferrum Forge's 2015 200-piece run would have been $500. These are an entirely separate deal.

I'm very impressed with it. Got the black on black with fish scales from Adams International Knifeworks for $170 after shipping. It locks up solidly in the hand, cuts extremely well, and takes a ridiculous edge on the Sharp Maker. My hand is about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch from the cutting edge and it hasn't been an issue (aside from the occasional hiccup cutting cardboard). I have no problems choking up closer when I need to. I'm looking to add a Newport to my collection one day, how do you like it so far?

Not loving the semi stonewash/mirror finish, seems undecided and the worst of both. Another good affordable intro to button-locks is the Tangram Vector.
@evshrug5 жыл бұрын
david marshall - my Tangram Vector is leaving me feeling cold. YMMV The detent came too strong to open with the thumbstud (after working it a bit I can thumbstud it open with two hands, but it’s still too stiff from the factory to thumb it open with one hand), so far I hold in the button and throw a lot of wrist into it. The button lock itself has a ton of lockstick, it sticks and keeps from engaging all the way when opening the knife (unless I follow up the wrist flick open with a push against the lock) and has a pop when opening. I haven’t broken the strong loctite on the pivot to mess with it, but I will because when I contacted Tangram about warranty service they pushed back on sending it in, also contradicting the warranty card’s statement that disassembly would void the warranty. The nylon washers also don’t feel very impressive (and I’d switch the order of the plastic and bronze washers like Nick did in his video). I was tempted to just return it several times, and put the money towards something else, however it still had several good points. I like the size, better ergos than the CRKT Tigh Tac Two, the blue Aluminum scales, the button lock concept, the steel for the price, and the Black Friday sale price was also really good. I hope that I can actually fix the issues with my unit myself, so that it becomes the knife I’d hoped for. It’s just such a pretty and cheap knife.

aluminium is 1/3 lighter than titanium ! both are cold in cold weather ! pro tech is not a customer loyal company like many other so called American knife CO. ! it is companies like this why I only collect clones of way way over priced knives ! pretty soon there will be a clone at a customer loyal price ! like $26.00 for a 945 ,the crap handled 535 for $15,00 ! the bugout frn handled is a crap $5.00 gas station knife and without all the lie hype from reviewers hard up for review knives it would be a $5.00 gas station knife ,this is a price that is a little over production cost ( a customer loyal price ) most all production knives are made by Chinese cnc machines even the so called American CO, knives , so your money is going to China but Americans are being ripped off by so called American CO.! I will think about loyalty to American knife companies when I see some ( that would most likely be when hell freezes over , as they say )! and the lie hype about steel is just becoming comical! D2 is the best edge holding ( that is my requirement for steel to be hyped as the best ) then XHP then S35VN ,s30v is renamed 440 not even as good edge holding as 440C ! nothing steel is rust proof , for the testers it is not salt water that oxidizes steel it is salt air ( air... oxidize, get it ?) carbon steel chain used in moorings ( I worked on a mooring tender at port san luis CA ) under water does not rust nearly as fast as air exposed steel ! nutnfancy had the so called rust proof spyderco on a rubber raft and it was rusty ( their is not such thing as rust proof) but there is much lie hype ! most people even so called knife people could not tell the difference in most of these steels without labels ! or like when the bias reviewer say maybe the steel is m390 when talking about clones ,when they could not tell the difference if a so called American knife CO. was lying about the steel ! sorry for bending your ear ! great review ! !
