How to disassemble and maintain the MachineWise Sonora Pocketknife

Today, we'll take apart a knife which is very good, but a bit tricky to reassemble, due to its integral construction: the MachineWise Sonora

Toothpicks and Q-tip shafts are my best friends while lining up washers especially with integrals.

I've used a gliderco balisong pivot tool. It was like 5 dollars and so useful!

I think integrals are obviously less complicated but most have their most own issues with slipping the washers or bearings in. I prefer disassembling standard construction tbh

I have that terrain 365 manual invictus. I disassembled cleaned and lubed it with pivot lube. It is the smoothest manual action I have come across yet.

Integrals are definitely more tedious to reassemble than a more conventionally constructed folder, but there are tricks to the trade that I suppose we should probably share to ease the reassembly process for anyone else maintaining their Sonora going forward. I'll bug Martin and see if we can't make a quick but informative video on disassembly, and reassembly in the relative near future. - GH (The guy on the QC card)

I took mine apart a month ago. It was very painful until you figure out a couple tricks. As for the washers... Sandwiching them with the blade and inserting them all at once is the easiest way to do it. Second big one is to use a taper or a nail to keep the pivot hole aligned. That allows you to seat the button easier by hyperextending the blade in the open position to allow the button to rest where it needs to go. Regardless... Great video.

@jackmarkham1516 yes. Same kind of idea, especially because of the bushing. The only pain is the fact that it's an integral. You have to pinch the washers slightly, overhanging the edge of the blade and squeeze them into the channel. Once you get the knack of it, a 45 minute tear down and reassembly turns into 10 minutes.

When installing the washers I grab a recipt book and on the back of book I drag the washer on the edge and determine which edge is smother and put that side against the blade. That way if the washer stops sliding it will not bite into the blade, it may seam like a small thing but a bunch of small problems add up.

A small plastic C clamp for woodworking would possibly do the trick of holding down the button and effectively giving you a "third" hand. I found a few on amazon that looked like they could do the trick without scratching the knife in any way.

11:33 any balisong flipper that has a channel handle balisong and takes care of it knows how to do this rather quickly😂: One washer into the handle, Fixate it with the pivot bolt, The blade goes in, Push the pivot a bit further through the blade so that is fixated aswell, Put the second washer in, use a screw driver or similar to push the bushing back into the blade and to get the washer into the right position so the pivot can go all the way through. Anything else would take too long, too many tries or too much precision.

Bushings, channel integral build, and of course threadlock all come from their balisong dna. I would say it’s ‘on’ a bushing, not washers exactly.. I’m _very_ amused that _you_ have 0420, because I am a child😆 0700 is the jewel of my collection no contest

Its like 27 minutes of why Id never buy a button lock integral knife, or frankly any integral knife. I dont see literally any advantage to an integral design over a sandwich design, but it does greatly increase cost and complexity of reassembly. Someone would have to offer me another identical knife for free, to even consider taking this knife apart. And even then I'd probably decline.
