How To Disinfect A Contaminated Fish Tank With Deadly Aquarium Diseases
How do you clean a contaminated fish tank? Its simple really. All you need is Patience, Bleach and Seachem Safe. Oh and a Sponge or two. You will need to drain the tank and remove all rocks and sand and decor. Then take everything out of your Canister Filters, or Sumps, or Hang on back filters and sponges filters. It is important to make sure that everything that was in the tank or was touching the tank is cleaned. if not you can run into problems.

20 minuites kills viruses @ 100% bleach watch out though bleach. Will give you a chemical skin. Burn and you don't want to breath and I would rinse out everything 10 plus times to reduce any % residue. Left for new fish sake don't recommend l would use hydrogen peroxide instead when it breaks down it forms oxygen and water l imagin bleach would eat your sealing / silicon of your tank and would leak or tank might just fall apart

So glad you posted this. Sadly, I have to do this today. Still can't figure out what annihilated my tank and figured this approach would be my best bet to prevent it from striking new inhabitants. Paraguard, furan 2, kanaplex, and maracyn 2 were unsuccessful, clean water and consistent temp were no match for whatever killed my poor fish. Fingers crossed I never have to do this again. 🤞

I’ve always been curious about how others disinfect / sterilize a tank. An essential practice for any sort of quarantine system, but I don’t get the impression it is something practiced as often as it should be in the main aquarium. At least, it isn’t really something I’ve seen many people discuss.. maybe because it isn’t that interesting to most people. Well, I find it interesting 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤓

I'm starting over but not for reason of disease. Switching to a new type of fish. I previously never quarantined because I was getting my cichlids from only 2 reputable places. Now that I'm going to do a community tank I'm going to quarantine first. Do you think I need to sterilize first before adding fish that I'm going to quarantine? Only two things I know that I've had in that tank where ich and internal parasites.

Hello! Thank you for this video! May I ask, how many gallons are your tanks? (Not sure if I just missed it). And is 1 cup of bleach enough to disinfect them? While I was searching online, I kept finding a ratio of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water. Really want to ask coz that would mean a whole lot of bleach for bigger aquariums. Hope you can answer my questions. Thank you!

I use a 1-part bleach and 19-part water solution. If you want a stronger solution then lower the water portion of the bleach:water ratio. I believe it's what hospitals use as well.
@meadowoodaquatics7278

How much bleach would you recommend for a 20gallon tank? Some suggest a 1:9 ratio of bleach: water but it looks like you only used 1cub for this big tank. Just wondering?

Does this work if the tank had been medicated as well? No traces of meds left afterward? I am boiling substrate and filter media, will that handle that? I had a sick oscar and I medicated him but he never got better, imagine that an oscar not wanting to take meds or responding to meds. He died 5 months ago, I am still heartbroken but I need his canister filter and bio-media for another tank. I just want to be like, quadruple sure I wont be medicating a tank by re-using anything. Going to clean the canister and hoses using this bleaching method.
@inventoryking

Hi Lyz, that sucks! Sorry for your loss. I would think that bleach in the tank and filters etc would take care of it. I believe carbon removes meds.

Nice video! I have a question. In my aquarium i had multiple cichlid and siamese algea eaters. At one point the cichlid showed signs of FIsh TB and started dying 1 by 1. Despite having good watervalues. But My Siamese Algae eaters remain alive and have no problem whatsoever. How should I disinfect my tank? Seems like it takes alot of time. (Which i dont mind). But I cant let my Siamese algea eaters in a bucket for too long whileim disenfecting right? Kind Regards Fles
@inventoryking
@inventoryking 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. What I would do is remove your Siamese algae eaters and have them in a plastic tote with your filter running on it so they still live. You will want to disinfect the tank with bleach like I showed in this video and let it run for a while and then take the time to rinse it a lot and let the clean water move around in there. You will want to also bleach your filter and get new media. So that might be tough depending on how many tanks you have and how many filters you have running that you can use. Because you could disinfect the tank all you want But the filter that was running that tank will still have remnants of whatever is in the tank. I hope that makes sense.

Hi there i recently had a columnaris outbreak and it destroyed all my mbuna! i removed my substrate and aquascaping rocks and soaked them in a steralizing bath basically water mixed with a steralizing solution called milton bleach (designed for baby bottles and dummies etc) i let my substrate and rocks soak for around 16 hrs occasionally stirring the substrate every few hours, meanwhile i washed my tank with a sponge and spray bottle filled with undiluted milton bleach, i let the solution stay on the glass then rinsed it after a couple of hours, i ran both my cannisters continuously for about 16 hrs in a milton bleach water mix constantly cycling, i dumped my media because i thought it would hold the disease (seachem matrix) and all sponges were dumped too, after i rinsed everything continuously for around 8 hrs i built my tank and filters etc back up and filled with water, i then added 600ml of 9% hydrogen peroxide to my water and let it circulate for 24hrs, i then drained tank filled again added another 600ml of 9% hydrogen peroxide and let run for another 24hrs, then again i drained my tank re filled added another 600ml of 9% h202 and let it run for 24hrs and on final day i drained tank again refilled and added 1200ml of h202 and let run for 24 hrs. I also had my substrate and rocks in tank while dosing with h202, i am now 2 weeks past the treatment and about to start stocking my tank again do you think i have done enough to steralize my tank buddy?

I’m not sure if my tank is infected. A few fish died but a half remain. Would all fish die if it was infected? The water doesn’t smell or anything. Water clear. Water parameters ok. I’d hate to go thru this process if it’s not required. How do you know if the tank is infected? Do you pour a cup after every fill up or just once?
@inventoryking
@inventoryking 5 жыл бұрын
You dont want to add bleach to the tank with fish, that will cause your benefical bacteria to die and you will need to recycle your tank, plus the fish would die. Were there any signs on your fish that passed? That may have showed why? Just keep an eye on your tank, if they keep dying, you might have to. Its mainly for when you have a deadly disease in the tank.
@Micarmn
@Micarmn 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. O man I’d definitely take out the fish first. I wouldn’t add bleach to a tank with fish. Just s little worried bc a few fish had fungus and possibly internal parasites, I also f’d up and bought plants from petco without treating. On top of that added rock from my front yard without watching your video first about cleaning rocks. Then not quarantining new fish. So many things could have killed or infected some fish. I currently have 3 angelfish and four green cories that are healthy.

Never used bleach and never would after my son (who was around 4/5 years old at the time) decided to help mummy clean the fish with *bleach* killed all my fish and that tank with numerous amounts of rinsing or scrubbing never got the smell of bleach out. *IF* I would ever need to steralize any tank or pond I would use Milton steralizing tablets which are safer than bleach (and don't leave a smell) but do the same job since they're made for baby bottles.

Hi there thanks for this nice video and for the information. Actually I have a 500 L tank and it was cycled and things were fine I added 15 discus and in two weeks 7 are dead , I took the rest to quarantine tank, and I put some guppies in the 500 L tank and almost a week and guppies are doing great ! So first I thought maybe there is something that cause the death but then guppies are fine ??? No I am hesitate what shall i do? The fact i want to disinfect the tank but i honestly don't feel good to use bleach ...can I use lot of salt and let filters run for some days then remove water and clean it with hot water? Would that be ok or do you have other way than bleach? Please help. Merry- Christmas and happy new year thank you
@inventoryking
@inventoryking 4 жыл бұрын
You are welcome, thanks for watching. Have you checked the water parameters after the discus died? Maybe adding all discus at once caused the ammonia and nitrite to spike? If is best to use bleach since it will kill the bad. You have to rinse the tank a lot to help make sure any bleach residue is gone and then let it run with new water and Seachem safe to dechlorinate it. Did the discus show sickness?

@@inventoryking thanks for your fast reply. The water parameters always at the acceptable ranges and I do regular check and had no any nitrite or ammonia, the fact in a 500 L aquarium I am using 3 eheim Professional 1200 XL they are really well cycled ,they did not show any sign of nitrate, nitrite poisoning. Just on day 10 they start hiding and then head up tail down and the die ,I could safe 4 of them at the quarantine tank. The strange part at the same aquarium I am keeping 2 guppies to try if they die or no the fact they are doing great😂 Using bleach I agree with you it is the best way. But I am living in appartment and I am do fill and flush the aquarium Manually so it will be very hard to flush it so many time any refill it. At the moment I added 5 kilos of aquarium pure salt and I added esha 2000 and the aquarium filter is running hopefully it can help. So do you have any other suggestions a part from bleach. Maybe I can add more salt?? Please not I have other aquarium 240 L also discus and they are doing fine . Before they die I tried all the possible ways, easy life voogle,easy life filtermedium Epsom salt but no help. Now in quarantine I added aquarium salt,3 days Flagullol anti parasite. Changing water every 2 days. Then before yestarday I started bactopur direct anti bacteria and seachem para guard, I can see a slightly improvement. But this big aquarium also has gravel which is one year in use I sought maybe it is the gravel releasing some chemicals, but on the other hand I see guppies are doing fine 😢🤔 Thanks

Great video. I’m a big fan of your channel. However, to thoroughly disinfect you need a bleach ratio of 1:10 to 1:20 based on the CDC and WHO (World Health Organization). Which would be way more than 1cup for your tank size. Essentially, bacteria is bacteria and viruses are viruses either in the aquarium hobby or everywhere else.

@inventoryking 5 жыл бұрын
Blanca, what are you planning on cleaning? Not the tank with the fish there they will die. Turn up the heat to 86 for a week or so, ick can't live in high heat. That is what I do. Search Ich life cycle at 86 degrees in google and you will see what I mean. If you want to bleach the decor that is fine OUTSIDE of the tank. And it has to be regular bleach and them soaked in a dechlorinating solution like seachem safe. If bleach gets into your tank it will cause the beneficial bacteria to die.

How do you know that the disease is dead? 10 minutes doesn't seem very long for such a small amount of bleach in such a huge tank How many times would the nleach water recycle the water in 10 minutes? Would the silicone react badly to a longer time or more bleach? Cheers

Why don’t you make a friction fit extension for your pump with a bit of extra pvc pipe it’ll be cheap and save you a lot of time draining those epic tanks of yours
@inventoryking
@inventoryking 6 жыл бұрын
Please elaborate
@erikhansen581
@erikhansen581 5 жыл бұрын
It looks like you have a coupler at the end of the pipe that goes half way down the tank and ends. My guess is it is glued together. Cut it off where it ends and use a coupler that is slip X slip. Don"t glue it at the end or where the extension connects 1/2 way down and push the pvc fitting together firmly. Cut a pipe to go to the bottom of the tank as an add on to use when needed. If the fittings ever become stuck , 1 or 2 pair of water pump pliers will undue it. I keep a pair of water pump pliers in my fish chemical box so I always ready. The brand have use and love is knipex. They are made in Germany and cost more money but worth every penny. The way the business end in the head is more narrow than everyone else who makes them including Chanel lock brand, so the German brand will fit in almost everywhere. The ease of one hand adjustment to open up larger or smaller. The grip of these priers is better than all others made and what every is garbed with them doesn't slip out. The ergonomics is great as well, like an extension of your hand. If you don't like the idea of your stuff not being glued together you could use a male adapter ( Slip pipe on one end of the fitting X Male pipe thread on the other end ) and a Female adapter ( Slip pipe X Female pipe thread ) to add an extension whenit is needed. i@@inventoryking
