I watched the video until 02:30 and I thought it's a great idea. I just got out of the house and took one of the thirty pallets I have for dismantling/cutting. Perfect. This is so far the easiest way to clean dismantling a pallet I have learned about. You don't need special tools for this. Thank you.

I have dismantled a number of pallets for projects and the easiest and less destructive way I found was cutting through the nails with a hacksaw but your method is better and quicker. I wish I'd found this video sooner. Never mind, I will do my next lot your way. Thanks for posting the video.

Thanks for this vid. I've done it with this method once a very long time ago. Then I got myself a reciprocating saw, which I found easier to take the pallets apart with. Just a couple of months ago though, my reciprocating saw died, crank shaft must be munted. So, I'm back to doing it the good old fashioned manual labor way!

A nail bar is a very handy tool for this kind of task...instead of pecking those nails through. And you can pry the boards apart with it as well. If you're worried about marking the boards, use a small board under the nail bar. There are any number of good ways of doing this task, but working on a table or something else that's stable and not on the ground can sure make it easier on your back.

That's a nice idea. Good luck with the project. Just a word of advice, always wear a dust mask when cutting pallet wood as some are treated with harmful preservative chemicals, and any furniture made should be sealed with a good quality varnish.

Thanks!! 2 ideas: 1 of yours - using a thin piece of wood to place alongside the pallet so as not to damage the pallet wood. Awesome! I will use this technique now! 1 of mine - from watching this I thought as to how you could speed up the process by not mis-hitting the nails. Use a tool/device/some scrap wood for instance that can SURROUND the nail you're about to hit. Imagine, say, a musical tuning fork, but thicker and reaching close to the height of the nail. Support the nail with this

Nice, but I have seen a video did it with jig saw for metal. The idea is to go right away for any gap between the two wood and cut the nail, so the wood will come out easily. It will take less time to do so and it will not hurt the wood.

I've been dismantling pallets intensely the last few days, and I tried exactly the same way as you are doing here, but it just doesn't work with EUR pallets. The pallet you were dismantling looked brand new, and quite thin/flimsy. I wish our pallets were like that :) Add to the difficulty, when the pallets are wet, have been lying in the snow or water, expanding and grab on to the nails harder, and are heavy as fook :) Good job there, miscpro, the result you produced was phenomenal! :)

You may want to invest in an air hammer, the kind that fits in the palm of your hand. It will drive the nails back in seconds and do a better job than anyone can with a hammer. Trust me on this one, I spent ten years teaching construction methods at a community college and prefer to swing a hammer to using an air nailer, but the palm air hammer is a tool I like.
@DEXTER9419 жыл бұрын
Very good, I like your method for straightening the nails with the lump hammer. One other tool will make the job a bit easier and I learned this from a good carpenter when I was working with him. I used to pull out the nails with a claw hammer just like you but he told me to use a medium size crow bar that has the curved head with the nail pulling V in it. I bought a couple of Gorilla bars that have this nail pulling head (after the curve). The crow bar is much easier to pull out the nails with (due to its sweeping curve and leverage) and its easier on your wrist and you don't have to bend over as much or kneel down when removing the nails.

Great video, very detailed and love all the close ups. I especially would of never thought to use a mallet against a hammer to straighten a nail. I will be making tons of yard furniture this year from pallet material as I live in Michigan and the big three and all their suppliers give away tons of these a year. Most people don't know that most pallets are made of grade A wood, once sanded and stained is some of the most beautiful oak you can't afford these days. I usually buy grade C Mary

You can get wood preservative including separate preservative formulated for the end-grain which I think is more vulnerable. Apply these. They are not harmful to plants after drying.

since you will not reuse the nails, have you considered using bolt cutters to cut them shorter before you start trying to drive them back through the board. you only need to drive them enough to capture the head with the hammer.

For heating purpose I use to leave the nails where they are, simply bending them flat with a hammer instead of pulling them out piece by piece.. The rest is sawing everything into pieces (blade saw). Nails can be removed lateron from the ashes, too :-)

While this may work on a traditionally nailed pallet ,many now days are using heavy duty long staples for construction which are next to impossible to be rid of using a hammer method.The only way to disassemble these nasty flesh ripping pallets is to use a sawzall and then pull the rest out with pliers.Ive tried using a hammer and pry bar method and didn't have much luck saving 100% of the wood.Worse yet are the ones that use a glue treated fastener of any type.Then you just have to saw off the ends and hope you can save enough good wood.

This was very cool, I love how you showed how to dismantle every piece, and I learned a lot of great little tricks! I tried dismantling a pallet and broke all the wood pieces but one and smashed my hands beside. Since you asked for feedback - this video could have had the same amount of information and been much shorter with some editing. Loved the tips (like straightening a nail) but a lot of it was redundant and the closeups of hammering made my eyes twitchy. Next pallet however I will try your techniques!
