This is fine for pallets which use simple nails. Most of the pallets I come across use two to three inch spiral nails which are a whole different ball game!
@shangyu25997 жыл бұрын
Same here, I just leave them alone... cut the wood off instead. Though less wood and shorter boards, but the boards can split easily if you try to pull the spiral nails off. Don't have a proper tool to cut the nails.
@michaeljohnston2437 жыл бұрын
I use that chisel that he keeps calling a "bolster" and a mini sledge and it cuts through the nails. Then just pop the heads out from the back using an old nail set.

Only came across this Video today. Over time I have seen a lot of videos to pull pallet apart and I have had mixed results. Most of the pallets I get have 2 - 4 inch nails with a spiral so I started to use a bolster chisel, bolster hammer ( small sledge ) and pry bars as seen in the video some time ago and had much better results, less splitting, and more wood for projects. Still time consuming but I get pallets for free and with the price of timber here in Australia worth the effort in my situation. Great video Craig thank you

Hey, come on Graig, @1:44 I think those nails should be longer and ridged so they don't come out so easily,,. Regards Alf
@garyreid42845 жыл бұрын
Most pallets in Oz are put together with nail guns. As a result most nails have glue on them for rigidity. I find it easier to saw through the nails. Less damage to slats.

Same as you I start with a bolster, but then I use a mattock, I can put a block under the blade to get increase the leverage. Remember to hold the nail into the crow bar just before it comes out as they fling out at quite a pace, straight at your face.

I've seen similar videos where they make/use a simple device for improved reverse hammering of the nails (which are usually longer and grippier than shown here). It's a narrow pipe with a free moving metal piston: Place it over the nail and hammer the piston -- the nail won't bend because it's in the pipe. Probably need a long and short piece of pipe.

3 inch nails in mine, with stupidly strong heads and its put together in such an awkward way, boards on top of each other with blocks in-between :| took apart loads of pallets but at a complete loss with these, easiest way i'm thinking is drilling a core around the screws but don't have any bits like that lol.

I’m sorry, but that’s probably about one of the lamest ways to take pallets apart all that kneeling plus those pallets came apart so easily. those aren’t like any pallets that I’ve ever tried to break down. I do agree with him about taking the nails out as soon as possible but even that sometimes is it practical considering all the bending and the changing up that you have to do while you’re processing the wood I would suggest to invest $40-$60 in one of those pallet busters that you could get online in the long run it’s gonna save you a lot of time which translates into money. Everybody doesn’t have a workshop or can weld or do they have the ability from a carpentry standpoint to put some things together, so just make the investment that’s my humble opinion. And believe me, I am real real cheap.

Just came across this video. Seems like too many tools are being used. I guess the new pallet busters did not exist? I have 60 to take apart, so switching tools every slat did not make sense. It is not said, and it is a short video, so not much chance to suggest bulk effort might be effective. Good enough! Thank you!
