How to dismantle clean, service, rebuild and preload a Mitutoyo Dial Caliper. First how to take it apart ready to clean, then clean and service, and finally rebuild it including preloading the gears to prevent needle jumping from gear backlash.

It took me a while to understand how this preloading mechanism actually works. Once I figured that out and how to put the gearbox back into place without losing the load, it was easy. Thank you very much, without these instructions I wouldn't have even suspected that it was necessary to apply some preload and would've wondered why the dial wouldn't work anymore.

Great video that I stumbled upon rather accidentally,,, as I am actually trying to disassemble and clean a set of Fowler calipers for a good friend of mine... I couldn’t help but notice, the o.w. marks on the case and the back of your mitutoyo set, and you said that you ordered them from the Internet. Amazing how they got from central Arkansas too you !!! I am o.w. by the way ,,,

Nice unit. I have the imperial version of these. They also have a metric scale on the rule, but the dial and fine increments are SAE.

Thanks for the video! I have a set of No. 505-627-50 calipers. I am having extreme heartburn trying to remove the needle! I mean, I am REALLY prying up under the center section. I am using a pair of tweezers to straddle the stem. I placed a razor blade on top of the dial face to absorb the force. Your thoughts?

There is a special took for safely removing the needle that I see from time to time on a couple of watch b repair channels. I do not know what thebtool is called nor dobI know the costs. But I 'd bet dollars tobdonuts that there are people in this c I m ments section who do know. There are quite a few people here that obviously know more than I do.

@@youcandoit1828 My calliper is 0.05 accuracy as opposed to yours at 0.01 accuracy. The complexity was much simpler to deal with. Only a single pinion wheel running on the rack and the needle attached directly. All clean and functional.
