They are reminiscent of the zip-up boots from the German company Salamander, which were very popular when I was a child, and they were amazingly durable. Czechoslovak footwear in those days was also of excellent quality and was highly valued.

i love the old socialist-era stuff as it's really hard-wearing. However, many companies have gone down massively since. Bata was hugely successful (it produced teh jungle boots in the Vietnam War) but they've had to close all their small shops because their quality is terrible and their shoes are way overpriced

@@CarpathianAdventure But this mainly concerns the old socialist-era stuff made in Eastern Europe, because the products from the USSR were junk.) Well, the shoes may sometimes be of quite good quality, but if shoes from the Eastern European countries appeared in stores, then people stood in line for many hours to buy it. My stepfather was a customs officer and he hated uniform boots, in the winter on duty he wore the Salamander boots I mentioned, he wore them almost for 10 years, and they did not wear out much.Yes, the Czechoslovakian footwear brand "CEBO", which was so popular in our area at that time, was produced in "Bata" factories nationalized after 1945. In recent years I constantly hear the opinion that the quality of many old respected brands has fallen very low, they simply exploit the old name and reputation.

@@ЗвездыБольшойПротуберанец Bata actually supplied the jungle boots to the US army in Vietnam, but now their quality is awful and they are way overpriced. Thanks for the insight into how things were. It's cool to hear

Can't wait to do this to my black pair. The shine on them at the moment is ridiculous. It's like I'm walking with two Suns strapped to my feet

please let me know how you get on. Just take it slowly.... better to err on the side of caution than turning your new shoes into sandals :)

How do you avoid damaging the stitching when using sand paper?
@CarpathianAdventure3 жыл бұрын
Hi Meteor. It really depends on how good or strong the stitching is. Older boots have much thicker stitching than modern Chinese-made stuff, especially army boots, so I can use the sandpaper how I feel. However, if you think your boots have thin or light stitching, then either avoid the stitches completely, or just gently rub the sandpaper along them in one direction - not haphazardly. This should keep the threads together.
