My husband (69) and I(70) are both crippled, but have always enjoyed container gardening. We are now growing kale and arugula on our shady patio and I am ordering a quart size pot of chives this week with my online grocery order. So I was really glad to find your happy, informative video for growing chives. Also, as soon as we're able, we would like to move to a wheelchair accessible apartment with a sunny patio. So I am interested in purchasing your book on container gardening. Thank you so much!

Thank you for this video. It inspired some confidence to move and divide the chives that have been in the corner of one of my containers beds for a couple years. I was surprised that they overwintered just fine in a pot in zone 4b but they really are a hardy plant.

I didnt know in the spring they flower. I got a packet of seeds and threw them out in the yard this summer and harvested the tops. I did not know about the spring. I look forward to that now. Thanks for teaching.

De H, they flower in warmer weather when you don't harvest them. Flowers are edible and bees love them! Then produce seeds when they dry out. I usually cut back the flowers after the bees have enjoyed them for a bit, then the chives start growing again. You can't grow wrong with chives! Thanks for the visit. :)

That process of dividing chives is almost exactly how I start and then transplant onions. I start from seed in January in a flat, no individual cups needed. I might even sow 200 seeds. When it comes time to plant outside, they can simply be uprooted and planted again. They are tough and survive the transplant process without any issues!

Thanks for the tips, Cliff! Onion seedlings are virtually indestructible just like chives. I definitely need to start my onions sooner this year. :)

Hi Angela, should be OK as long as you didn't trim off all the roots. No need, though. It's OK if they're bunched up in the planting hole. Enjoy your chives!

Another super helpful video! Is there a length of time that your chives should be established and growing before dividing? Is this something you’d do annually? My other question is for growing in containers - I love your full pot, should I sprinkle the seeds in like lettuce or is more important to give the seeds room to germinate and grow?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Brittany, I like to divide mine when the clumps are 4-6 inches in diameter like the one I showed in the video, usually every 2 years or so. But you could do annually if your chives clumps are getting crowded like mine were. No hard and fast rule for containers, I like mine full so tend to use more plants and seeds. You're plants might not get as large that way, experiment and see what you like the best! Thanks for stopping by!

Can I divide them right now, in the middle of summer?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 Ай бұрын
Yes, you can divide chives in the middle of summer. Here's a simplified guide: Choose a cooler or overcast day to minimize stress on the plants. Water the chives thoroughly the day before dividing. Carefully dig up the entire clump of chives. Use a sharp knife or spade to separate the clump into smaller sections, ensuring each section has roots and shoots. Replant the divided sections immediately in well-prepared soil, spacing them properly. Water the new divisions thoroughly and keep the soil moist until they establish roots. By following these steps, your chives should thrive even when divided in summer. Hope this helps, Brendana! (Did I say that right?) Kim

Thank you for making this very helpful video. I started some chives from seed early february this year and now they are starting to flower! I will divide them to decorate the garden. BTW, you mentioned they are perennials to zone 9, I am in southern california zone 10 so what does that mean for my chives? Is it too hot for them to come back? Thanks!
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 жыл бұрын
Glad the video was helpful! They'll do great in zone 10, I meant to say they are perennial in zone 3 and higher. Mine grew well in the summer, dried out a bit, but hung in there in the heat. Chives will thrive in the cooler temps of the winter here in So Cal, especially if you divide them so they aren't crowded. Enjoy!

I decided mine about a month ago and they took off. So much and I am trying to dry them but they always turn brown when they dry. Any tips to keep them green?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jack - answered your question on the livestream today :)(missed you!). I usually just snip and dry mine on the counter and have not had them turn brown. If you're drying in the oven, perhaps you're using too high heat? Set oven on the lowest temp, or on warm, even prop open door a bit. Hope this helps! Enjoy your chives!
