Great easy tutorial and confidence builder that I needed to dig up and divide my bearded irises. Thank you! I am not sure if it was just myself or if anyone else watching could relate, but those of us looking for a concise “how to,” it drove me a bit crazy to sit through the WHOLE processes that included each pass of the pitchfork while digging out, splitting each ryzome. Cutting each iris leaves down, digging the holes for placement… I think I wasted my time because I kept fast forwarding but just in case I missed something, I would backtrack and watch it anyways ha!!!… The video could definitely be condensed for stress free viewing 😂 :)

Thanks so much for the great Iris division tutorial. Although, I just don't see myself dividing both my 25-30 gallons/94 liter containers of Iris any time soon. Happy growing.

You are going to laugh now, I have one bearded Iris (carnival time) which was given to me last year. Only later I realized I planted the rhizome in the wrong place because it was small and got shaded by other plants and I did not water much after planting which I should have as I can understand from your video today. Anyway, in spring I haved moved it to a sunny spot and it is growing with 3 fans. Hope it will bloom next year. Thank you for this informative video :))

I bet it will bloom for you next year, Fernanda. They are resilient plants and by next year it should be over its sulk. Do put up pics when it blooms!

Bearded Irises also struggle in the tropics... so we plant Walking Irises - they are far less flamboyant but they are hardy survivalists.

The hot weather this spring caused my iris to finish flowering in April already; dividing occurred the 2nd of June. Some of the divisions are in bud again already o.O It's a weird year that's for sure

Very helpful. Thank you. Here in California, even when I divide Iris, I never trim the leaves as I want them to continue to guzzle as much sunlight as possible. I am told this cutting is necessary where it snows, but unless you are selling or giving them away, I have yet to hear an argument that makes sense to me. Of course I may be having an attack of the stupids on this issue so you might check with a botanist or whatever . Instead of using food and energy to regrow leaves not cutting permits them to concentrate on their sex lives (flowers). Sometimes I get some blossoms the next year despite the surgery and the move. I also feed them water from boiled dinner vegetables (no salt), fish fertilizer, murdered slugs and snails, and very diluted Miracle Grow tomato food. Go easy on tomato food unless you have a stout fence to protect the neighbours. You will be amazed how big over-fed Iris can get, but that will retard flowering. I hope you can do additional videos as Iris are very hard to kill but can be very fussy about flowering.

Thank you for sharing your experience and I am glad irises do so well for you. The avoidance of wind rock is the usual reason for cutting iris leaves. You may enjoy this other iris video of mine... kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXi4f2aoa850qcU

Do you have to cut leaves if you want immediate coverage in a garden ? Thanks
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 2 жыл бұрын
By cutting the leaves you reduce the likelihood of the plant rocking. If it rocks while trying to establish roots, they may break, setting the plant back. You don't have to cut the leaves but your chances of success are increased if you do. Hope this answers your question.

@@GardeningatDouentza Thank you! My neighbour had a bulldozer smashing the garden down. My house was built in 1904. There was a massive jackaranda tree that fell down on our walls. They demolishing the garden so I asked them to keep for me. It has been raining alot so the soil is wet So I want to take them and replant but I want flowers and do not want to wait a year.
