The editing is hilarious, I love the part where you go to answer the phone. I'm modifying my mother's cornice boards. I've been calling them "valances" this whole time. They've already been recovered once, and somehow in the interim a mouse managed to make it's home in one.

Thanks for this. I have all kinds of saws and it's just so easy to whip out the jig, anchor a straightedge and do it. Once you get the fabric over it the edges won't be noticeable. Great job and thanks for the measurements and hardware bits.

THanks I have a new detailed tutorial on cornice boards coming to UDEMY- online classroom in the next few weeks

I used a white pine board - 1 inch thick and 10 inches wide. For the length, take your window width from the outside edge of molding to other outside edge of molding and add 3inches (allows for 1.5 in overhang on each side). You will need 2 small pieces each 3.5 wide for sides. The top is covered in a 1X4 pine board (measure more like 1x 3.5 in). I hope that helps answer your ?

DIYHIPChicks Any alternative ideas for hanging besides L-brackets? I got my boxes done today, but I'd like to get any more ideas before I start putting holes in the wall :)
@DIYHIPChicks10 жыл бұрын
You could attache a ledger board to the wall and screw the cornice to it from above or below. But Industry standard install uses L brackets. It is very easy. You should be able ot grab a stud around the window frame. If just miss one, be sure to use a decent anchor

I gave up today out of frustration. The boxes took so long to make (5 of them) and I was horrible at cutting and putting them together. I made a trip to Jo-Anne today and got the batting and fabric. I was able to get 2 of them done, but my lack of skill showed with the finished product. No way I'm going to hang them. I gave it a shot :) Thank you very much for the help.

If you want a taller cornice board, buy a 1 x 12 board. You can make even taller ones by using attaching two boards together with mending plates on front and back side (batting will cover them). Have fun

You can get a book to make it sq. to save money. please buy a jig saw for only $ 15 or so cutting with a regular saw is a pain you can get one at mernards or a place like that. plus you can use it some place else.

HI I use inexpensive common pine boards. I generally make the cornice board 12in high and width and depth vary based on window. I make cornice 5 in wider than window frame and depth or projection of 3-4 inches. Depth varies by adding panels under it. Hope that helps

reality that is a simple way to build a cornice but not the right to build it, that sounds like a home mother imagining how do it not bad but not the precise professional way
@DIYHIPChicks9 жыл бұрын
+Jose Felipe Perez Jose Yes it is a simple way to build it. THis video is 3 yrs old. Basics still apply. I could show a more complicated and proper way to do it. But this fits need of many homeowners with limited skills and tools. When I make then more clients, it is more precise. Would love to hear your tips to share with viewers ;)

How to cover a cornice board part 2 hip chicks
@BrigitteGoodman9 жыл бұрын
A jigsaw is NOT the BEST tool to cut this wood. A circular saw is. But you can use a jigsaw as well if you use a guide next to it made of a piece of wood clamped to the board the width of the jigsaw plate. Do not attempt to saw it freehand, it will look terrible and crude.
@DIYHIPChicks9 жыл бұрын
I agree with you but in 3 yrs of teaching DIY skills to women I find many are very intimidated by the circular saw or table saw. Jigsaw seems to less scary, hence why I suggested it. Keeping straight lines can be tricky.
@BrigitteGoodman9 жыл бұрын
yes, I guess, the mentioning of a guide made of wood would help. There is small circular saws on the market which work like an angle grinder but with a saw blade. maybe that would do the trick.
