It's always a good idea to check the data sheet to identify what pins are f**ked, as many are duplicated i.e. 0V and Vcc and connected internally. If so, no worries, just ensure they are not shorted.

I just love your channel. You deal with high tech stuff, just like me. I'm an infrastructure analyst and electronics enthusiast. I have a Z800 mb with the 2nd cpu socket with broken pins ( actually, I broke the pins trying to fix/straightening them ). But the 1st cpu is working perfectly, so, I'll buy the socket from chine and a few 775 sockets to practise with other dead boards before messing with the Z800 one. Good luck with the next one!

first of all when desoldering and surface mount components you cannot pry up on the component otherwise you'll tear the traces and pads off the board. when cleaning the solder off pads use a good amount of heat, some flux and the copper mesh to slowly go over all the pads. keep moving the iron to a clean spot on the copper mesh to absorb all the left over solder. use Flux remover spray to clean up your work afterwards. you can also use 99.9% electronic alcohol. this type of repair work is very hard to do unless you have the proper equipment and experience.

got this HP off my buddy, said it didn't work, figured i could salvage something off it. fans spin, but no POST, no beeps. tried messin' with jumpers, pulling RAM, different PSUs, etc nothing works. someone suggested breadboard it. while stripping mb i pull the heat sink off, cpu is i5-3450. i'm thinkin' aye pretty nice for free. pull cpu from socket to check it out. EVERY SINGLE fuckin' pin is sheered off in the socket, half are bent one way, half are bent the other way. was going to buy another cpu and replace the socket, but after watching this, that's waaay to much dickin' around to maybe successfully salvage a shitty HP board. thanks for video, saved me some time and probably a lot of frustration.

if it's like the 1150 socket then the pins are made to be in the socket. not on the cpu itself. the pins in the socket are made to be bent like that. with half one direction and half the other.
@manusoftar Жыл бұрын
for a DIY setup, it could be better to just replace the individual broken pins. The only thing you need is a hot air solder, well and a couple of pliers small enough to be able to remove the broken pins and install the replacement pins. The good thing with a hot air soldering station is that you can set the exact temperature you need for it in order to make sure you will not screw something like melting the plastic. Also, if you replace the entire socket there is a good chance than some of the solder balls may not do propper contact with the board and as a result, the cpu will not get all it's pins properly connected to the motherboard which would result on an unstable and erratic system.

I was cleaning my Sabertooth Z77 motherboard sometime ago after I had a catastrophic cooling tube failure, after using plenty of IPA and an anti static cleaning brush, I managed to remove most of the mayhems pastel ice white cooling fluid from the black PCB. I then proceeded to soak both sides heavily with IPA using a spray bottle then I used an air compressor to blow out any remaining mayhems cooling fluid from underneath IC chips etc, but sadly I passed the air gun over the CPU socket accidentally which blew off the cpu cap cover and bent around 5 pins. I straightened 3 pins but broke two D: Now my motherboard has the weirdest quirk ever... I cannot output any sound via 3.5mm audio jacks. I cannot input any sound via 3.5mm audio jacks. Even a PCI-e sound card cannot output or input audio over 3.5mm ......... Yet the PC is rock solid and I use it nearly constantly for fraps recording and video encoding / gaming etc The only way I was able to get sound out of the PC was to use SDdif/Optical out to a supporting sound system (logitech z5500's) Strange eh, but it lends weight to what you said ""I've seen CPUs lose several pins and work without issue."" :D

Heating from the bottom lowers the required top side temperature. To avoid melting components/parts. For example 450deg C top or, 350 top and 100c bottom.
@ScottDowneywoundedbear8 жыл бұрын
You have to be really careful of the traces on the motherboard and not just the ones on the top layer. Boards can be up to 8 layers so its really easy to damage them with heat. Scott

You were very close, next time use a lower temp on your iron and DON'T please don't clean those pads to much, perfection sometimes comes back at you and bites, those pads are very very fragile they don't like to much heat, at 5:20 you could just fixed those bridged pins on the top right corner and that would be fine, but you can't learn without experince so next time you know, don't set the iron to hot, move slow, don't be a perfectionist and the most important thing be 100% carefull with the wick use a small piece of wick instead of the whole wick and move it with the iron not by hand
@MyPlayHouse8 жыл бұрын
Hi Tiago Oliveira Thank You very much! Thank you for watching! :-)
@ericvonverde87556 жыл бұрын
You have to clean ALL of the solder off of pads after removing the socket, then tin and clean with braid again. Pads need to be smooth or you won't even be able to place the socket, and you'll get bridges. Don't use a small piece of wick, it'll be too hot to hold. Lots of flux, high heat (around 350-360), and keep the wick moving. Never stop and hold heat in one spot. DO NOT listen to Tiago Oliveira's advise. Sorry, but you're just plain wrong. I've done hundreds of these, and everything you said is going to lead to board damage and failure.

Wait, how DID they solder those capacitors on the other side of the board? Come to think of it, the board gets populated on one side, rolls on a rail into an oven, gets reflow-soldered, gets flipped over, gets populated on the other side, goes on rails into the oven again all the way to the melting temperature... the back side capacitors should have fallen off when they made it! Well, apparently they don't, because they glue the first side components down first. A repairman said it's like often a red dot or so under them. I expect that back side should be first side because there's fewer components on it.
@ericvonverde87556 жыл бұрын
Surface tension of solder keeps those tiny components in place. In fact, a slightly off-center surface mount cap (etc) will get sucked into place when the solder becomes molten.

Hello, how are you, I have seen your videos and they seem excellent, you have done a very good job, I have a motherboard that has damaged pins and I would like you to fix my motherboard, I will not be able to send it to you for now, since I do not have silver, but someday I'll get in touch with you.

Flux flux flux, you need lots of flux... the liquid type. It takes some skill for success in this application. Too much heat, not enough heat, being to aggressive or not aggressive enough, heating too long or not long enough all matters. Adding low temp leaded soldier to these type of connections is critical in removing old soldier paste, if not you risk ruining the copper tracings... it's a mission critical job for applying and cleanup.

+1 but I guess you need +10 motherboards to make a +1 working PC. Next time you better use a lot of stunt motherboards to show how clever you are :-) Maybe you should try with a 8-bit CPU with less pins next times :-)

This was satire joke right? 2000watt heat gun? acetone ? Seemingly no experience soldering at all and jumping right to BGA reworking of a modern cpu socket? Clean flux with iso or 99% rubbing alc get acetone away from motherboard use solder wick to clean pads with soldering iron with generous amounts of flux on the pads you are cleaning keep the heat gun away from your board that thing could melt your battery, don't charge and use that battery like that at the same time and don't connect a powered charger to the battery, turn it on after making the connections precisely preheat the board evenly to a very specific temp and you need a hot air station that can be set so you don't melt anything or exceed the min temp it takes to melt the solder, use a flux paste with solder bits in it when you want to solder the new socket in, clean smooth first then alc then flux paste solder then clean again ensure only a little bit a solder is on each pad then clean again add more flux over it put down socket heat to just what you need to melt solder and have it that hot for a short a time as needed then as you are removing heat ensure not to bump the board and don't touch any surface complainants as they might all be floating on molten solder but cool down slowly and evenly so that expansion and contraction stresses in the materials are not drastic and fracturing the thing from a cold spot right next to a 250c spot For pre heating and cooling down you should use a air system that blows over the whole board gently even precise heat not a electric stove thing made with a lead acid bat.. and after all that probably still screwed up as a real repair would use a machine that heats removes uses a stencil for the pads places new part and then cools all automated and you just set the settings and put the part in and it does everything you don't touch it.

those cpu sockets use whole blocks of pins for power and ground. if you have only one pin broken you maybe lucky and is a redundant one. For example this is the 1155/1156 diagram www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?288886-Haswell-1150-motherboard-pin-diagram if its a control/data line going to dram module then you have not installed then again it maybe fine

Well It is made so you can replaces the CPU. It would not make much sense make the socket replaceable. Not often that would be needed,, would you pay extra for that :-)

@@MyPlayHouse I've had bent pins on a board one time, in the end I bought another board. I think one day they will make a CPU that plugs in like an M.2 or similar, course it will be a new type of board as well, then the CPU's as we know them now will be extinct.
