I used to do events on my own. 2 back surgeries later, I couldn’t if I tried. My assistant is my ride or die homie. He is just as OCD as I am. Wires? What wires. He makes them disappear! A gaff tape expert! He has helped streamline my setup and strike to about 20 minutes tops. The venues LOVE when you’re out in 20 minutes. I appreciate him more than words can explain. If you don’t have an assistant, you should get one. It doesn’t hurt your bottom line.

Werd!!! Couldn't agree more that having an assistant is a HUGE bonus, especially for a wedding! One tip I would add for DJ's new to the wedding and private event scene, always arrive early or with more than enough time to set up. There's nothing worse for me than not being set up, ready to go and background music playing before any guests arrive. Thanks again Jason!!!

My man. Jeff Tomrell of Three Hive Entertainment here (Go Go Gadjet, Magical Mystery Doors). So many great points in here! Meeting the couple in advance has been a GAME CHANGER for me. We have a lot of fans of our band hire us and we don't always know who they are. Getting that one on one time before their big day allows us to all be on the same page and really elevates the connection. I'm no longer entertaining "strangers," I'm delivering for friends. Keep these videos coming. Great stuff!

Since 1978, I had a partner ... actually an assistant ... who brought the backup equipment. ... mine was the primary system ... help with requests, didn't do much MC work or bring in many gigs .. but helped set up, was a 2nd opinion on what to play next. I very much loved working with him and we split the $$$ evenly. Then two years ago (before pandemic), he didn't want to work on Sat nites or Sundays!! He eventually refused to do ANY gigs, abandoning our partnership. So I had to pick up the slack and do it all myself. I've increased business and really picked up more and better gigs since his departure. The only thing is that I have no breaks and have more equipment to carry & setup ... oh, and I am even more tired after getting home.

I don't always bring an assistant, but one of the times I did was the sole reason I was able to make it onto Barstool 5th Year, since he captured an epic video of me on the dance floor. Def gonna keep trying to bring assistants/friends with me to help out!

Excellent advise. I agree an assistant makes everything better, but some markets won't bear the extra cost of having one.
@Jason_Jani3 жыл бұрын
Not sure i follow that. I think it is about justification of value and how you run your business. Pls explain.
@djrockinron20003 жыл бұрын
@@Jason_Jani The specific market area I am in is very price sensitive. If I up my prices a couple hundred bucks to allow me to pay an assistant, many potential clients will opt for a lower price dj/company (which do not have an assistant). I am in the Columbia, MO area. Hope this clarifies a little better.

And when introducing the Happy Couple, definitely don't announce them using Mr. and Mrs. ( brides maiden name). Yes I did. And when called out on it, I quickly said I did so because we know who will wear the pants in the family. Crowd laughs, then I re-announce using the proper names. Whew..

Did a wedding in 2020 that I only communicated with the wedding planner. Disliked not getting to know the couple beforehand
@Jason_Jani3 жыл бұрын
I know it’s super hard to truly get someone or to get a couple when it’s via a third party conversation. Planners are awesome but they aren’t always DJs or are able to just get the answers without the extended conversation.

Oof to that bonus tip. Think of how dumb the average person is, and realize, half of them are dumber than that. I have speaker bags, which quite obviously fit only one way, and time and again, people force them on backward. From 19 - 65, drunk to sober, no, you cannot help me - I got it, oh you're hired help and we've been over this repeatedly, literal babies solve this shape problem with ease. Literal 👏 babies 👏 Oh I need a Standard Operating Procedure for people? Well, the bags did not come with instructions, because it's so simple it's a bag and only fits one way. Ok, enough out speaker bags, let's hook up the audio. Audoo comes Out of the mixer, goes Into the speaker. The XLR cables only fit one way too. And the outputs and inputs are also clearly labeled on every device. Audio out -> Audio in. And folks can't comprehend this. Daisy chaining? No, they can't even get audio out of the mixer, into the speaker, daisy chaining, while the same concept, it blows their minds. Sales people who don't talk to their leads. Audio people/"DJ's"/+1 Help who do not unserstand Out -> In. Folks and +1s who can't comprehend simple shapes. I would LOVE some competent +1 help. Would love to get two +1 helpers, train them up, and send them on their own gigs. Would LOVE to bill extra because the client is getting TWO DJ's. But people are unskilled, and they don't seem to catch on either, after multiple dress rehearsals and weddings, Out -> In just does not click. Cable runs have to be rerun because the cables are run backward/reverse. Great idea in concept.
