Eileen Chen if you do it right, it really does just go right behind your back if you don't catch it. So you're safe! Fr don't freak out, you aren't going to get hit as long as you remain calm and catch it

banapolis Me too! I’m a senior in high school and the guard captain at my school and I work SO HARD!!! I started out so bad that nobody wanted to teach me or work with me, and so I trained myself to learn by watching, imitating, and some advice. However, nobody would teach me how to do a 45 because it was “too hard” and so I never tried it because I was too scared, but then came my senior year and I was already supposed to know how to do it... I had the opportunity to work with a guy who marched with the Cavaliers. He became our choreographer, and when he found out I couldn’t do a 45... Yikes. And there was nothing I could do but try and master everything else he was giving us because I had to coach everyone else who were ALL freshmen and ALL first time guard members. It got difficult at one point, but the one thing I am able to do really well is memorize a routine, so I tried to use that to my advantage so that I could teach them well and leave a good legacy. One of the freshmen already learned how to do a 45 and I’m just like, “Wow! Look at you!! :D” I still can’t do one, and I’m scared to seriously injure myself by doing this. I’m sorry to type so much, but I felt like I could relate and wanted to share. :)

Ah my colorguard calls this a pitch toss. This was my first year and I was the only newbie to have to throw it for colorguard now since winterguard is starting everyone has to throw it, but now I get to catch it behind my back while others are learning to turn and catch it.

It's because you're not putting it at an angle when you release it. But it's fine, I know you will get it one day. Something that helped me do it was to do a cone and then the 45 toss. It helps build up more momentum. Good luck! I believe in you (:

Sarah Harrison different tosses are called different things... do you mean a horizontal toss released by one hand starting from flat behind your back? or released by two hands starting from right flat in front of you?

I’ve never been in guard before, but these and parallel’s are the only tosses I can consistently and accurately do. I’m trying out for my college’s guard and I’ve had four private lessons, but I’m still really nervous. Do you have any tips for regular front facing tosses? This is such an old comment lol but I have some tips for front facing tosses! Pop tosses are the most common front facing tosses, and I was always just a little shy of full rotation like you’ve said, and what helped me was bring my left hand down and smacking my thigh to get that right amount of energy, and what reaaallyyy helped with making it go the full way was making sure my arm was straight for my release point. It doesn’t seem like it would make a change, but the higher release point will make the flag go higher and allow more room for rotation so you don’t have to panic and grab it before it gets too low. Again, really old comment lol, but I’m also answering for the people who are having the same problem!

When you are looking up at your own toss, remember that your neck is bending up at a 45 degree angle, just like your flag should be, so it actually DOES look flat to you! 😄
