I'm 14 and have never skated on ice before however I do plan to start soon, but I don't feel like I'll be struggling with your tutorials, it's very helpful. So thankyou!

Excellent tutorial on how to do the back spin. With more practice, a basic scratch spin will become a powerful scratch spin.

this was a great video! I’m trying to improve my back scratch even more. as a video suggestion, do you think you could sit down and explain how figure skating qualifying competitions work? (Regionals, sectionals) I have a general idea of how but I would love to hear how it works from someone who has competed in those competitions :))

Id like a video entitled "what weird things your body did in the last 30 years since you last ice skated"? I skated as a teenager, was never doing competitions or anything like that and only single jumps on a good day, but I used to be able to do a pretty reasonable and fast back spin. And likewise (but faster) with a front spin. And I don't know if it is just my brain is failing me, but I swear the way i remember doing these things just doesnt work any more. Yup obviously if you don't skate for like 30 yrs, you are going to be out of practise to say the least. But after having weekly lessons for 2-3 months, and slowly things are improving, I also really do feel like the techniques that worked for me as a teenager just dont work at all now. Like my body has decided it has entirely different rules now, that I need to figure out and follow... For example, i used to launch myself headlong into a 1 ft spin, in either direction, and while thats not great technique, it usually worked well enough i could do a nice fast, if technically wrong, 1 ft spin. I also launched myself into 3 turns and jumps like that. Again i know its not great technique. But now if i launch myself into a spin or 3 turn that way I end up on my arse. I know that its not great technique i am not arguing that at all. More my point is, that i feel like something weird, unseemly and maybe just outright mean, has occurred with my body where now i have to follow every technique rule to the absolute letter, to then get a result that is below average at best and face plant at worst. This is probably the wrong youtube channel to ask this on, so i might also ask it on an adult skater channel. But, has anyone else found this to be the case? Is ice skating as a middle aged woman, (probably middle ages man too) just one more example of our bodies giving us the finger and telling us we need to do 10x the work to get 1/10th the result?? Lol

Hi. 🙂 Honestly, 30 years is a looong time. I skated from 4 to 12 years old in a club (competitions etc) and stopped for 18 years after that. I haven't regained my former level in a year (going to the ice rink once a week + off ice training once a week), but it's getting better ! So... Keep it up and with patience it'll come back !

7:25 Coach demonstrates entering backscratch spin from a small gliding entrance and then demos a little two revolution back spin. Except that she doesn't do a back spin at all. Instead she does what I've noticed neophyte skaters do sometimes, which is some sort of forward one foot spin on the right foot. In a backscratch spin the right foot should be traveling backwards on an outside egde, but if you lay 7:25 at 0.25x speed you will see coach's right skate is traveling forward during her spin, not backwards.

2:58 Coach says "back inside 3-turn" but I'm sure she should have just said "inside 3-turn."
