When I saw olympic figure skating routines I thought they touched the ice with their right leg when taking off, so I thought I learned it the wrong way (hence why I'm here) but thankfully I did not hehe (I don't really like the salchow so I wasn't looking forward to learning it all over again). Very nice video though! I think it can help people a lot

Hi Mary, its Dario from Italy, when I was young I used to do competition in speed roller skater, now I do it just for fun, but since 4-5 year I completely fall in love with ice figure skating! After so many tv program, youtube video and some marvellous competition seen live, I decided to begin an adult ice figure skating lessons! I'm 46, but I feel almost like a child when I am on the ice! Unfortunatelly I live 50 km far from the ice ring and I can practice just once a week, so I am very grateful to you for your video and your nice tecnique to explain!! Yesterday I tried for the first time Salchow jump and wasn't so bad. In future I will disturb you with some question, ok? Thank again and have a nice day! Dario

OK, some key tips i heard that are a little different from what i have either been told or inferred: 1. hitting the toe pick - i was definitely told this on the waltz jump, and leading with the left shoulder as opposed to the chest has guaranteed a toe pick for me there - usually my left inside edge really digs into the ice and leaves a "hook" pattern on the end of the 3 turn. some skaters at my rink will leave a gash 1/2 inch deep in the ice from the hook ! 2. jumping outside of the circle - ok, i have always tried to kick right leg across the left as i am starting to lift off and thought how odd a jump this is cant wait to try those two out and see what happens. usually my first salchow is the best when i practice, maybe these will lead to some consistency

Yes! I do not roller skate though so unsure if technique is different. You will have more momentum and glide on ice so off-ice helps but a bit different.

meg h yes, every jump takes off backwards except for axel
@uuuuh1230
@uuuuh1230 3 жыл бұрын
You enter the jump backwards (as is the case for all jumps except axel), but you don’t actually jump backwards. Just before you take off, you make a small turn with your left leg on a back inside edge. At the moment of taking off from your left leg, you’re actually facing forwards. The important distinction between an actual salchow and an improper one is that your blade shouldn’t travel forwards on the ice once you make your turn, otherwise you’d be doing a waltz jump with a funky entry. You also shouldn’t do more than half a turn on the ice otherwise the jump will be pre-rotated. If you look at the slow-mo, you can see that as Coach Mary brings her free leg around, she ends up facing forwards and jumping into the h position!
@SparklingSunset71606
@SparklingSunset71606 3 жыл бұрын
Are you actually supoosed to place the free foot on the ice for a single, or is that just an exercise? I've been doing this jump for 6 years, but my coach only recently told me to try doing the 3-turn, putting the free foot down, sweeping around and jumping. But she said it was an exercise...I'm confused.

Hey! So, I used to artistic (roller) skate as a kid, and I started Ice skating about a year ago (with a 20 year break. I'm 40.) I haven't actually taken a class yet, but I have an idea of how the jumps go, but there are differences for sure. So- clarify this: on the Salchow, when you take off, you actually ride up onto the toe pick??? And take off from your toe??? (this is super different for me. I started being able to land them last week, but in roller we never took off from the toe.)
@normano3573
@normano3573 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Most ice skaters ( probably all ) ride up and take off from the toe. However the best coach in figure skating history ( Mr. Gus Lussi ) taught to ride the edge a bit longer and take off from the heel which would help you get a lot more height and distance. It's an old technique so most skating people nowadays wouldn't look at it even thoe it yielded the biggest and most exciting jumpers in history. Most world class skaters would fall on their face trying that but if you learnt to jump off the heel when first learning the salch it would be like anything else hard to do at first then get easier. Maybe you would find that easy as you are a roller skater. Technique in my opinion is a word overly used in figure skating. Most coaches just teach what their coach taught them regardless if it was good or not. Thats what most of my coaches did. I went out of my way and learned Lussi technique in my old age and can now jump higher and further than I ever did when I was in my twenties. Hope that was helpful . I give you credit for joining skating. Once your in it's hard to get out.
@fierce_circus
@fierce_circus 3 жыл бұрын
@@normano3573 is riding up onto the toe considered good technique or cheating? In roller skating we (at least, my coaches) considered three turns before a jump cheating. Therefore I learned waltz jumps from skating forwards, Salchows starting from backwards, etc. As kids we knew those turns would add momentum, and we would do it, but it was frowned upon. The fact that people start a loop jump with two feet drives me nuts too. That being said, none of this stuff is as easy as I remember it when I was a kid! And ice is not the same at all!
@normano3573
@normano3573 3 жыл бұрын
@@fierce_circus Ha! It must be weird trying these jumps on the ice when you have them ingrained on roller skates. I hope I understand your question. Riding up to the toe on a Salch in ice skating is normal. Virtually everyone does it that way. We are taught a Salchow is done with a back three turn and jumping when you are facing forward. So a triple Salch is technically 2.5 revolutions and a quad is 3.5 etc. I think I could only do a Salch with a threeturn. Not sure how to do it without wiping out.I do prefer taking off from the heel instead of the toe which is extremely rare as it lets you ride the edge and use the leverage of the blade more which catapults you into the air.Unfortunately in figure skating it seems like most people just want to land the jump not caring if it's small and spinny. The days of the big jumpers are disappearing. I agree with the two footed loop technique. We get that too. What is up with that? Waltz jumps from skating forwards? You guys are hard core!
@fierce_circus
@fierce_circus 3 жыл бұрын
@@normano3573 waltz jumps from forwards, salchow with no turn, loop with no turn... Honestly I had a 25 year break between quitting roller and starting ice so while it might feel like I know what to do, I don't! Still dusting off the brain cells!
@normano3573
@normano3573 3 жыл бұрын
@@fierce_circus I think if I tried roller skating I would have a couple of rogue wheels rolling away from me have a couple of holes on my outfit where the knees are and my sequence would be strewn all over the place. 25 year break and hitting the ice... Respect. I find the people who realize that they don't know it all and are open to new things in figure skating get the most out of it. Have fun!
