This video will show you how to do a basic residential concrete floor estimate. When I bid a concrete job for a client, I am responsible for estimating the cost of materials and labor. This video will show you how I figure the cost of my materials per square foot and how I add that to my labor rate for a final estimate.

These are comparable skills needed in whatever discipline of trade. I call this for your trade, take off skills for electrical basics. Young guys (apprentices) want to automation and the hi-tech stuff. Power, lighting, basic diagrams they don't want! They want to jump to the engineer' s level without the apprentice experience. Man these skills are critical for any discipline in the form the basics take. ie concrete take off and calculation skills for your trade, electrical diagrams for us etc. I think you get the concept and communicate it so well!! Wow thanks for this insightful look into this important issue!!

Great video Mike! I knew of 3 different formulas to order concrete, but I have to say I haven't heard that one. Just dividing it by 81 if its 4 inch, 60 if its 6 id assume. Seems like the easiest way! I like to do it at least 2 ways, but now it'll be 3 ways haha thanks buddy.

Hey mike I just recently started watching your videos and I love watching them. I’m still young but I’m 23 and I’ll be 24 this year I have been pouring concrete since I was 13. I’m looking to try and go out on my own within the next year or so. I just love this kind of work and really don’t want to be doing anything else. I’ve worked a lot of residential and commercial concrete work. But one question I have is how do you know what kind of concrete mix to order for each pour. I’ve worked this a lot but I have never actually made a order for concrete myself. Really that’s about the only thing I’m not a 100% sure of. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

Always go higher psi than the plans call for so when you get a job that require sample you'll be above the requirements and won't have to tear it out. We almost exclusively use pea gravel mix and rebar if there's no rebar we add fiber mesh and pour 3500 psi especially if we are using a pump they add water so the pump doesn't jam this takes down the psi rating so cover your self and start with a higher psi so you don't have issues

Mike, just curious. What is your markup to cover your overhead and profit. I found out the hard way last year I wasn't charging enough for my work, not saying your doing that. Then I found a perfect book that taught me that I wasn't charging near enough to cover my overhead, let alone make a profit. Just curious that's all. Hope to here from you

Does the extra concrete that you figured in also cover the footing all along the perimeter of the foundation? Or is there a separate formula to figure that out 🤔 I’m trying to learn this stuff myself.
@gauravvij67
@gauravvij67 Жыл бұрын
Of course not, I guess that's extra! US building is Mickey mouse I'm surprised all this doesn't crack and fall apart. Thats 3mm wire specced with no wire chairs and hoping it's lifted when poured. No wire in the house floor which is connected to the vertical walls ( crazy). In Europe the foundation footing is poured and then the floor is floating relative to the foundation and would have 6mm wire on 50mn chair 4 inch concrete. On top of that later insulation would be put 150mm and then a second floor poured over that 1 inch concrete. Much better built and better insulated , the insulation is 6inch versus the 2 if it has that at all.

That same exact job in the state of Oregon would be $10-$13 per square foot pump is added extra... Usually $350 for the first 10 yards. You had 2240sqft...so obviously it would start at $22,400 plus the pump.All concrete guys here fine grade themself. nobody here leaves it up to an excavation guy they just don't get the grade close enough it needs to be within a quarter of an inch.

Question for you Mike, or anyone who can answer it correctly… if I have an irregular shaped pad(quadrangle), how would I go about calculating it for concrete? 18’ 24’ 16’ and 4’

Hi Mike, What can one expect as far as an average profit margin? 20, 30, 40%? Thanks!
@MikeDayConcrete

On a simple floor like this I expect closer to 40%.

@@MikeDayConcrete I think it's important to point out this is GROSS margin. Dawson, you still need to cover your other business costs (overhead) office space, office time, customer time, maintenance costs, etc. Mike do you have a target Net Profit Margin? Most are relatively close-lipped... 10-15%?

Mike I've been in the concrete field for about 4yrs now. I started out running a breakout crew doing sidewalk for a cable company. I also ran dump trucks to and from recycling yards. That job ran it's course. Now I am working with another company basically laboring. I want to move towards finishing, I've done some and I'm not bad for a beginner. What and when do I ask for more in my paycheck? Today alone I ran 3yrds by barrel. I'm 54 and as much as I enjoy being fit to do so not sure how long I'll be able to do it.

When you learn a new skill you can do without someone checking on you, that makes you more valuable to them. The more finishing skills you can do makes you real valuable. Everyone is looking for those guys. Show up on time, don't complain, have a good attitude, don't have to be told what to do, and you're skilled at your craft. Then you can ask for more.

I'd say I'm already looking to pay more when someone shows consistent initiative to learn new skills. I can coach and develop skills, realistically I can't cultivate a growth mindset. "Hey boss I'd like to learn XYZ so I can be better for you and the team. Which job coming up would be good for me to jump in and shadow someone?" If you have even a half decent boss his or her ears should instantly perk up. I can't wait for the skills to develop, because they will take them elsewhere. I need to partner with my crew to develop their skills for my business and pay appropriately!

A lot of waste on that estimate. You actually order that amount? Does the ready mix plant take the left over back or are you responsible for it?

Great Video!! When finding your yards of concrete why do divide by 81?
@MikeDayConcrete
@MikeDayConcrete 4 жыл бұрын
81 is how many sq ft 1 yard of concrete will do at 4" thick. Just an easy way of figuring yards for 4" floors.
@ericringler4784
@ericringler4784 3 жыл бұрын
because a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet and a cubic foot is 3 square feet at four inches thick.

Hi Mike, I pretty much do my material calculations the same way you do. I figure materials , labor costs, and I also figure in delivery costs, overhead and profit.. Here is what you are missing in your estimate for the project; 1. Overhead costs 2. Profit on the job. 3. Delivery costs, our suppliers here in New Jersey charge about $250.00 per truckload of concrete delivery, do they charge that in Maine? If so, it wasn’t included in your estimated costs. Do you already include these fees in your materials and labor costs? You didn’t mention it if you did .

@@MikeDayConcrete gotcha so you generally have the contractor or owner take care of excavation and dirt hauling?

In Texas we usually charge 1.50-2.50$per square foot for demo and hauling depending how big the job is.. and thats on top of the cost of pouring the new concrete..
